Thirteenth Annual Miss
Berlin-Gorham Scholarship
Program will be held on
Saturday, November 3, 2018
at 4:00 pm at the Medallion
Opera House, Gorham Town
Hall, 20 Park Street,
Gorham. Applications for
the Scholarship Program
may be downloaded from the
Miss New Hampshire web
site at www.missnh.org. The
deadline to enter the Miss
Berlin-Gorham competition
is Friday, October 12, 2017.
There is no entry fee. In
2018, Miss Berlin-Gorham

$8,300 in scholarships, from
this local competition and
the Miss NH Scholarship
Program. Young women

Starting us off are a few
news stories you may have
missed. First, North Dakota's
smallest incorporated city
was on the verge of dissolv-
ing after the death of its
longtime mayor. But now it's
rebounding, with expecta-
tions to double its population
— from two residents to
four. The McLean County
community of Ruso was on
the verge of disincorporation
when its population dropped
following the death of 86-
year-old Bruce Lorenz. It
takes a minimum of three
residents for a community to
be incorporated, according to
the North Dakota Century
Code. "We want to keep it

going for Bruce's sake,"
Laurinda Roloson, the city's
auditor and one of Ruso's
two remaining residents, told
the Minot Daily News . Her
husband, Terry Roloson, is
the other Ruso resident. The
city discovered that Greg
Schmaltz qualifies as a resi-
dent because he has a Ruso
mailbox and makes daily
checks on his horses and
chickens on land within city
limits; he's expected to
become the city's next
mayor. Schmaltz and his
wife, Michelle, currently live
in Velva but plan to move
later this year to Ruso, where
they have a residence under
construction. "We're looking
at fall to finish everything
up," Greg Schmaltz said.

Over the last two weeks
Atticus and I have driven
more than 3,000 miles dur-
ing the first leg of our book
tour. We’ve been taken far
from the land we love.
We’ve traveled from the
bucolic countryside of north-
ern New Hampshire down
through many of the more
urban areas of the northeast.
We’ve been to the ocean,
stuck in smoggy traffic in the
bowels of the highways
coursing through New York
City, walked the cobblestone
streets of old Richmond,
Virginia, and driven through
the farmlands of southeast
Pennsylvania. Along the
way we’ve visited spirited
independent bookstores and
met audiences of all sizes:
from more than 200 to less
than 10. The audiences have
been wonderfully receptive
and on most occasions we
had more than 50 people in
attendance, even in places

The woodshed is com-
plete! Since mid-August it’s
been a trickle towards com-
pletion, but at long last, just a
couple weeks ago in mid-
September, the last board
was measured and the final
nail hammered. Thank
goodness!
The back wall was put on
under the mid-August sun in
Beth
Weick
friend and I as we conversed
about plenty of fine topics
quite removed from wood-
sheds. In the subsequent
weeks, firewood was stacked
high in the middle bay, dry-
ing fast as it faced the south-
western sun. The endwalls
were the product of a few
hodge-podge mornings, as
Ryan and I each found some
free hours and minutes to
close in the second and third
sides of the shed. Ryan con-
tinued to split additional
wood, and I continued to
stack it. The woodshed was
done, and our winter wood
was ample and dry! We
brimmed with contentment,
surveying the fruit of our
efforts.
But, one thing remained
before I was ready to consid-
er the project truly finished.
With the hardest work
behind us, I wanted a touch
of beauty - and I had my
sights set on the southeastern
endwall. A new flower bed
was what I envisioned. So,
from our sugar wood pile, I
carted over some round
sturdy, and in various heights
- and created an artsy edge.
As the site of this new floral
delight was mere woodline a
few months ago, the soil was
less than robust; largely min-
eral soil and rocks, of course,
to be accurate. I therefore
put down what remained of
last year’s kitchen compost,
followed by well-aged horse-
manure-turned-soil acquired
from a kind neighbor and
their equine charges. This
compost was, in fact, des-
tined for my vegetable beds,
but I had just enough for this
new garden space, too.
I transplanted some
coral-hued daylilies into the
ting shaded out behind the
pear trees, and planted a few
red lupine seeds I’d collected
earlier this summer. A cou-
ple peony roots belonged
front and center, and I men-
tally designated the eastern
corner for an obedience plant
that I’ll transplant in spring,
as it’s not flourishing where I
currently have it. At that
time I’ll also plant sunflower
seeds along the endwall, a
sunny greeting for whoever
walks by!
I put away tools and
washed the freshly laid com-
post from my hands. The
woodshed was officially

As the weather gets cooler
and the leaves begin to
change their colors, we can’t
deny the fact, fall is here.
Without a doubt, changing
leaves are one of the most
fascinating gifts from
Mother Nature. They are
simply beautiful. I wish they
could stay colorful and never
turn brown for 2 reasons. #1,
I could stare them all winter
long, and #2, I wouldn’t have
to rake. The latest study I’ve
read was about trees.
According to scientists, trees
communicate to each other
via their roots. (It is amazing.
If you have a little time, read
it.) I bet, even leaves do!
Moreover, they like teasing
me! My assumption (theory)
is they signal each other
when I am raking outside:
“Don’t fall!”. They wait until
I finish raking, put my rake
and wheelbarrow away and
walk satisfied into the house.
What other explanation
could there be for not notic-
ing all my hard work that I
had done outside after 5 min-
utes? Don’t you have the
same feeling? But before I
cut out every tree in our yard,
there are many activities this
season that recall the beauty
of autumn. Let me share a
couple!

view of the changing leaves,
Leaf-Peeking Train Rides are
the best way to recharge.
Grab your camera and
favorite snack then lean back
for a couple hours. You can

Mountain Railroad in
Chester, VT. Either go for a
2-hour round-trip scenic ride

If you ask a random person
on the street if he or she
knows someone who has
been affected by breast can-
cer, it’s likely that the answer
will be ‘yes.’ As of 2017,
there are over 3 million
breast cancer survivors in the
United States, and awareness
of breast cancer has
improved leaps and bounds
over the past few decades,
with numerous organizations
and foundations working
tirelessly to provide educa-
tion and community support.
These efforts have not been
in vain. In fact, the American
Cancer Society approxi-
mates that breast cancer-
related deaths have
decreased steadily since
1989, due to finding cancer
earlier through breast screen-
ing and effective adjuvant
therapy.

Although survival rates have
increased over the past few
decades, one hard fact still
remains: breast cancer is the
second leading cause of can-
cer death in women. The
hope is that this will change
as screening becomes better
and therapy technology

of breast cancer – regardless
of how early it’s detected –
should be treated with the
utmost attention, especially

A change of sea-
sons, a time to
reflect, on yourself,
and the community.

Leaves are turning and the
days are getting shorter,
morning dew washes over
the hay fields as we awake to
a blanket of fog, squash
overflows our gardens, and
canning, stacking and raking
become weekly chores.
While the warmth of the
summer sun still finds its
way to our skin, and shorts
continue to be a staple of the
weekly wardrobe, it is the
sweaters, coats and boots
that are quietly taking over
our daily attire. You may find
yourself sleeping deeper,
enjoying the crisp mornings
and cooler evenings tucked
under the covers. Kids return
to school after summer’s
long break to play and learn.

cafeteria, reading in the
library, working in the class-
room---a reboot to a child’s
routine.
As I take my dog for his
morning walk, I practice
observing, I quiet my mind
and wondering thoughts, I
practice being present with-
out context, allowing what I
sense to come to me without
the bias of my crowded and
chattering mind. I see the
orange, red and green leaves.
I hear the chirps, songs and
saying of insects and birds. I
feel the crunch of gravel
under my boots and the call
of a distant loon. Droplets of
water glisten in the soft
morning light, the sun makes
its way through the dense,
pillow-like fog. The air is
damp and green, a feature
I’m sure will soon change
once the frost and snow are
upon us. I stroll through my
local cemetery, observing a
peaceful rest. I stop for a
moment. I listen to my
breath, my breathing, my
surroundings.
When I get home, I feed my
dog, and pour myself a cup
of coffee, black, no cream or
sugar. I allow my mind to
again ponder, to wander, to
contemplate my walk. I think
about the cemetery, with so
many at peace---all having
been a part of my communi-
ty, this place. From bakers,
to homemakers, these folks
continue to contribute to this
place, albeit in a different
way, as memories and
memorials, as a place of
wander and quiet repose.
Even gone, they continue to
be a thread woven into the
fabric of my community. For
those of us not interred, we
continue to weave new
threads into the collective
quilt, adding to our shared
sense of community.
For me, this particular fall is
a joyous one. My son started
pre-school, and I will soon
welcome a baby girl. As my
life changes, so too will the
contributions I make to my
community---increasing
family responsibilities will
decrease my availability to
give back. But I know that
my contributions, albeit
smaller, will still be mean-
ingful and appreciated.
Honestly, you don’t need to
be a select board chair, orga-
nizational trustee, or com-
mittee member to contribute
to the place you live. You can
volunteer a couple hours
here or there, help plant
some vegetables in a com-
munity garden or your neigh-
bor’s yard, read a book dur-
ing story hour, help someone
with their groceries, open a
door for a stranger or some-
one you know, send a smile
someone’s way or pass on a
friendly hello. A community
is woven by the relationships
and interactions of those who
live in it. Sure, it is important
to have some folks willing to
chair committees and run for
political positions, but it is
the efforts and volunteer time
of everyone that help enrich
and make our communities
unique and wonderful, full
and complete.
