buy real tax-free goods at airports when you are travelling

LANGUAGE
Switzerland has four official languages: German (spoken
by 64%), French (20%), Italian (6.5%) and Romansh (0.5%).
Zurich lies in the German speaking part of the country,
where people speak a German dialect, so called Swiss
German or Schwyzerdütsch. Be it among friends, at work
or when dealing with the authorities, people speak dialect.
However, Swiss people use standard German, so-called
Hochdeutsch, when writing and speaking at school.

Take a piece
of Zurich with you
If you’ve asked yourself what to take home from your trip to Zurich, here are
some local products, apart from pocket knives and cuckoo clocks. We think they
make a good gift or souvenir, as most are made or designed in and around the
city. For all of the classic souvenirs take a look at souvenir shops on p. 50.
TURICUM GIN
This gin is actually distilled in the city of Zurich, hence the name Turicum (Latin
for Zurich). A passionate group surrounding Merlin Kofler has produced this fine
spirit in small batches since 2015. It’s made of 12 different natural ingredients
including local fir tree needles and lime blossoms as well as juniper berries, of
course. The successful brand comes in a stylish stone bottle and is definitely a
good souvenir or gift. You can find it for example at the Jelmoli (see p. 44) and
Globus department stores on Bahnhofstrasse. Q www.turicum-gin.ch
PARTIME
These Swiss designer watches were invented by Zurich local Andy Mossner.
They display the time in a new, graphic way by simultaneously showing the
time of day and how much of the day is left. For example, a blue area within
a circle represents the amount of time still remaining in the day, while a
white area gradually eats into the blue. A rather original way to keep Zurich in
mind. Find it at Teddy’s Souvenir Shop (see p. 51), at its webshop or ask for an
express delivery to your hotel. Q www.partimewatch.com
ZÜRICHFOTO.CH
Photographer Rolf Müllestein sells authentic black and white
pictures of the city of Zurich, the old town and the lake. Some
are coloured, but all are framed, signed and numbered. The
unexpected views of Zurich’s sights and landscapes are definitely a
good way of taking a tiny bit of the city back with you. You can visit
his shop next to Grossmünster church (Kirchgasse 32, G-13) where
you’ll often find the photographer himself. Q www.zuerichfoto.ch
SPUTNIK ZURICH
These minimalist-style bags manufactured in Switzerland are design-
ed by Zurich locals Chelsea and Steffi. They come in two models and
a variety of colours and all have a reflective diagonal stripe, which is
a kind of trademark. The functional Voyager has two compartments
that can fit your laptop and daily belongings, while your smartphone,
wallet and keys can be stored in an additional hidden pocket. The
top can be folded and it’s meant to be worn like a messenger bag
on your back. Definitely a practical Zurich souvenir. Find it at Die
Macherei (Europaallee, Lagerstrasse 104, D-10) where you might
even run into Steffi and Chelsea. Q www.sputnikzurich.com
ZÜRI TIRGGEL
The traditional Züri Tirggel honey biscuit certainly makes for a good
present. The Tirggel was mentioned for the first time in the 15th
century and consists of up to 30% honey. Today only a few bakeries
still make this artisanal treat. The bakers create traditional Zurich motifs
like the Grossmünster on the biscuits by pressing moulds onto very
thin dough. The biscuits are then baked at high temperatures using
only top heat. That gives them their characteristically brown top, while
the bottom stays pale. The result is a hard, but sweet biscuit. It’s best
to keep each bite in your mouth for a while, so you can experience
the full honey flavour. Get them at St. Jakobs Bäckerei at Stauffacher
