We prepared this book as our thesis. The book consists of architectural design photos
that shows the inside and outside of the structures that we have designed and allows
the reader to have an adequate idea of the project’s huge scale and to understand the
engineering concepts behind its preparation. Chief Architect was used in the
architectural designing and drafting of the Presidential Building Compound.
Furniture, decorations, trees etc. were all carefully placed using that software. Our
team members discussed the many issues that arose and dealt with any design flaws
before the confirmation stage and diligently worked on the buildings to make them up
to standard. The pictures show the different views and angles from the outside and
also show the interior of the various rooms. The different dwellings for the president,
the presidential family and the staff live and work in the same environment so care
was taken in the placing of rooms and facilities. Architectural decision-making and
engineering judgment was number one in our project’s implementation. To prevent
confusion a simple style has been followed throughout. We have chosen this style to
make the book as reader-friendly as possible.
Analysis and design in our project was greatly simplified with the use of the Etabs 9
software which is one of the softwares that we learnt in our engineering courses. The
dimensions of the members and their ability to carry the loads that will be placed on
them was all determined with the use of that software. We initially used manual
calculations but was coupled with Etabs. The design of foundations, columns and
slabs etc were partly completed calculation methods that we learnt in the last couple
of semesters. The mathematical and analytical expertise that we gained in class was
put to good use.
Ased group consists of ten students that collaborated on each step of the project. The
work was divided at the different stages according to each person’s area of prowess
and their personal preference. For example, three people draw the building on a
computer while four others carry out the calculations for that building. Teamwork is
the backbone of our group and loyalty to the work at hand was key in the finishing of
the project.
