Chapter 1 Using This Guide

Using Tejas Product Documentation

The following Tejas product documentation set helps you use the range of Tejas products:
 The Hardware Description Guide explains hardware configuration, functions, capabilities,
limitations, and physical characteristics of the product.
 The Installation and Commissioning Guide provides information on installing the product and to
initially configuring it to the point of verifying its proper operation in the network.
 The User Interface Guide introduces and orients service providers to the content, function, and
organization of the user interface that support the network elements.
All documents for the shelf are referred to as Tejas technical publications. Each document has a
unique thirteen-digit identification number called Tejas Part Number (TPN). This number is used
to identify each document, and assist in cross-referencing from one document TPN to another.

The TPN is found on the cover page and at the top of every even page in a document.

Forwarding Database (FDB) is a database that contains information that maps the Media Access
Control (MAC) address of each known device to the switch port where the device address was
learned. The FDB also shows which other ports have seen frames destined for a particular MAC
address.

Media Access Control (MAC) address is an address made up of numbers and letters assigned to
the hardware that uniquely identifies its place on the network.

Link Aggregation Group (LAG)

Link aggregation is a method for using multiple parallel links between a pair of devices as if it is a
single higher-bandwidth channel. Additional LAN interfaces are needed at each end of the
aggregation. Additional slots may be consumed in the devices being interconnected. Additional
complexity is required in the device drivers to support aggregated links. Controls (either manual
or automatic) are needed to ensure that aggregations are properly configured and maintained.
Static LAG is supported in "Distribution mode" and "Protection mode" across all member ports.

NOTE: It is recommended to have the member ports with same Bandwidth. LAG is
supported across FE and GE port. In this case, an alarm "LAG members are operating at
different speeds" is raised. Before adding Members to LAG, admin status of the member
ports should be ADMIN-UP.

OAM and L2DCN are supported in LAG in Protection Mode, whereas OAM and L2DCN
are absent in LAG Distribution Mode.

Managing Ringlets
A Ringlet is a part of a ring and contains the set of VLANs in the ring, which needs to be
protected. A VLAN in a ring can be protected by only one Ringlet. A Ringlet has a unique
Ringlet Id within a ring and a unique Control VLAN ID. An ELINE is internally created with the
Control VLAN ID for forwarding the ERP control packets. Packets matching the ERP
destination address and the VID are identified and forwarded to the other side of the ring if the
ports are not blocked.

Services Provisioning
In Ethernet network, data is transported across Point-to-Point and Multipoint-to-Multipoint
EVCs according to the attributes and definitions of the E-Line and E-LAN services. A flow
point is an object that interfaces between EVC and the physical port. Its function is to identify
flows belonging to a particular service (EVC) out of many associated with the port.

NOTE: It is advised to use NMS for provisioning and editing Services.

Managing ELINE Services

An ELINE service is a point-to-point service involving only two network interfaces on any
constituent network element.

An ELINE service can be created between:

 .1q to .1q interface: In an ELINE service between .1q and 1q ports, the packet is identified
using the CVID value at the source.
 .1q to .1ad interface: In an ELINE service between 1q and.1ad ports, the packet is identified
based on CVID on .1q interfaces and SVID + CVID on .1ad interface.
 .1ad to .1ad interface: In an ELINE service between .1ad to 1ad ports, the packet is identified
using the SVID value at the source. The packet is forwarded to the provider bridge if the
SVID value is within the SVID range defined in the flow point at the .1ad interface.

Managing Flow Point Template

Flow Point is a combination of FlowPoint Template (FPT) and a Physical Interface. Flow Point
(FP) acts like a virtual link below interface that directs traffic from interface, conforming to FPT,
to the service of which FP is a part. FP acts as a virtual link that directs traffic from service,
conforming to FPT, to the interface over which FP is configured.

A flow point is an object that interfaces between EVC and the physical port. Its function is to
identify flows belonging to a particular service (EVC) out of many associated with the port.

Ingress Quality of Service (QoS)

The Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of technologies for managing network traffic in a cost
effective manner to enhance user experiences. QoS technologies allow measuring bandwidth,
detecting changing network conditions (such as congestion or availability of bandwidth), and
prioritize or throttle traffic. User can identify flows within a FlowPoint and give differential
treatment to them from other frames in terms of allowed bandwidth, and egress CoS queue
assignment.

The following features are implemented using QoS at the Ingress:

 Policing: Determines the number of packets that are allowed into a network. The behavior of
the packets is defined by the following bandwidth profilers: sTCM, srTCM, and trTCM.
 Classifier: The incoming traffic is classified at the ingress at the flow point level and the micro
flow level.
 Security: Determines if the packet should be sent or dropped and ensures security. Security is
implemented using Access Control Lists.

Egress Quality of Service (QoS)

Quality of Service is implemented at the egress by Schedulers and Shapers. Schedulers define the
order for traffic flow from the CoS Queues while the shapers restrict the traffic flow from the
CoS queues. The scheduling comes into play only when there is congestion at higher layer
whereas shapers work irrespective of congestion.

Managing Scheduler Profile

The scheduler assigns weights to the traffic flows or queues at the CoS level, FP level. Queues are
treated or scheduled based on the weights assigned to them. The weights determine the ratio in
which the packets from the different queues are forwarded to the next stage.

can be enabled on a physical interface; it cannot be concurrently enabled along with any other
queuing tool. When using Modular QoS command-line interface (MQC) to configure queuing,
however, WRED can be used for individual class queues.

Managing CoSQueue EgressQoS Configuration

The scheduler assigns weights to the traffic flows or queues at the CoS level, FlowPoint level and
tunnel level. Queues are treated or scheduled based on the weights assigned to them. The weights
determine the ratio in which the packets from the different queues are forwarded to the next
stage.
