Course Description:
This course introduces the networking field. Emphasis is placed on network
terminology and protocols, local-area networks, wide-area networks, OSI model,
cabling, router programming, Ethernet, IP addressing, and network standards.
Upon completion, students should be able to perform tasks related to networking
mathematics, terminology, and models, media, Ethernet, subnetting, and TCP/IP
Protocols.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to perform these tasks:
1. Use layered models to explain data networks
2. Explain the role of protocols in data network communications

3. Describe protocols and services provided by the application, network, data
and physical layers of the OSI model
4. Design, calculate and apply IP addresses and subnet masks to fulfill
network requirements
5. Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts, media services, and operation
6. Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches

FTCC Grading Scale:


FTCC grades are based on a 4.0 grading system. Each grade is assigned a
“grade-point equivalent” in quality points for each term credit hour scheduled.

93 – 100 A – Excellent
85 – 92 B – Good
77 – 84 C – Average
70 – 76 D – Below Average
0 – 69 F – Failure

To be eligible for Net 126, you must achieve the following:

1. complete Cisco’s online final exam


2. complete the skills-based assessment
3. complete Cisco’s course evaluation survey
4. a composite score of 70 or greater from the six evaluation items
listed above.

If you do not meet the minimum items above, you will not be eligible to enroll in
Net 126. Your FTCC grade will be based on the weighted scores received in the
six evaluation items listed above.
Instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus, assignments and due dates at any time with
written notice to the students.

Student Attendance Policy:

Each student is expected to attend class regularly - - at least 80 percent of all
scheduled contact hours. If absences exceed 20 percent, the faculty member
may drop the student from the course at any point during the term. More
information on attendance may be found at Student handbook. (pg 12)
