them, the teacher is most important.” Bill Gates. “

Teaching and Learning with Technology

When you hear, “Technology will take over the future.” Some of us will get excited and

can picture a life with flying cars, and “actual” hover boards. Some of us will be frightened, and

cannot imagine surviving a life like that. I believe technology has already taken over. How can

we disagree with that? Children are going to their first day in kindergarten with cellphones, and

tablets in their backpacks. We are living in a world of social media, and technology is the main

provider.

I am her today to propose to you the benefits of technology and the impact it has made

her in Clark County. But most importantly, how it impacted the children of ABC Community

School. ABC Community School was fortunate enough to be given so much technology by Clark

County School District from the beginning. We have been so grateful for the technology that we

could not wait to put this technology into place in our classrooms. Unfortunately we have been

advised to discontinue the use of our technology and focus more on concepts that will be

enforced on standardized tests.

To all members of the Clark County School District, and local educational agencies here

in Las Vegas. I Leslie Trujillo a proud teacher here at ABC Community School call for your

attention. As I provide you with ethical reasons for not making us abandon our technology.

Teaching and learning with technology is something that students today can adapt to right

away. Kids love technology, they love social media, they are attached to their cells phones like

peanut butter and jelly. Teachers have tried to enforce the students to leave their cells phones at

home or in their lockers. Why take something that they love so much away, when we can

incorporate it in the classroom. Cellphones are great for researching something quick. I know I

do it all the time and I wish I could advice my students that if they don’t know something while I
TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY 3

am teaching to fill free and look it up. I understand we can get cautious with the students not

using technology the right way, but if we support it, then maybe we can actually have the

students get used to it. Tablets are our new books. I believe eventually we will go away with all

books and classrooms will be filled with tablets. Tablets are also like cellphones, students can

research something right away and can continue with their education without being so lost.

“According to a study by IT Trade Association CompTIA, around 75 percent of educators

think that technology has a positive impact in the education process (Cox).” That should be more

than enough to tell you that we need to keep technology. If you take away what is the older

teacher, who are afraid of technology because they do not want to learn how to use it, then I am

sure that number will be much higher. Teachers know what they need in classroom they observe

the students and can notice if someone is learning something or not. Why are we taking away

technology when teachers are seeing improvements with it?

Technology is benefiting the students more than anyone else. Technology makes learning

fun, and can benefit them in the future with higher tech jobs. Kids can work in their own pace

when they use technology. If they are struggling then they do not have to move on, they can go

back and continue practicing what they need. Lastly kids are connected and are attached to

technology more than ever. They will continue to be attached, and soon enough they will be the

future of technology.

Thank you Clark County for attention, and I only wish you can take everything into

consideration. Technology is not the future but technology is now.

Standards of Technology

Standards have been set for technology in school up to the national level. The state of

Nevada has incorporated a state technology plan. Clark County has established computer and

technology standards in their curriculum. Technology is already an important part in schools and

our state of Nevada wants to continue to promote technology. Clark County school district here

are some amazing standards that are already a part of our curriculum in the National, State, and

County level.

The National education technology standards are very simple and were created to prepare

the students for their future. The Nation standards of ISTE describe the skills and knowledge

they need to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly global and digital society

(ISTE Standards for Students.) The standards are very upward and involve a lot of creativity,

research, communication and critical thinking. Some basic and important concepts for children.

The standards do not specify a grade level, but are very brief that you can incorporate students of

all ages in the standards.

The state of Nevada has created a Technology plan that influences the students to use

Technology daily. Their mission is to teach students about 21st century technology that will help

them in the future with the economic growth of Nevada. They focus on infrastructure,

professional development, communication, leadership, evaluation, assessment, and finance. All

great standards that students should learn to develop a professional technological approach on

everyday life (Commission on Educational Technology).

Clark County school district has computer and technology standards already incorporated

in the curriculum. They are great standards that are for students from grade levels three, five,

eight, and twelve. The standards are more specific than the ones in the national and state level.

They require more elements and can incorporate them in any subject you wish.

As I have stated we already have some great standards incorporated in the curriculum.

The national level, State level, and county level have all taken great consideration when creating

the standards. It is because we have them established already that we should keep enforcing

technology in the schools. The levels of standards are different because as you get higher to the

National level then the standers become brief, and become more specific as you get closer to the

County. After the County we have the school and the County is the most important out of all of

them. But if we are already enforcing technology in the National level, than what make Cark

County different then any other school.

All standards are the same throughout the levels, the concepts become more specific in

the County. Other than that it is the same concept when we think about Teaching and Learning

with Technology. I will be showing you a lesson plan today on a standard I have chosen from the

National level. The standard is number one, Creativity and Innovation. In this standard the

students will demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative

products and process using technology (ISTE Standards for Students). Some simple but very

useful standards that children in third grade can incorporate with technology.

Lesson Plan

• Doodle monster

•3rd grade

• Technology Standard #1 creativity and innovation: students will demonstrate creative thinking,

construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and process using technology.

• Computer class content Standard 2.0: Students use appropriate productivity tools including but not

limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia and telecommunications.

• Objective: students will develop creativity and knowledge while composing an abstract creature with

PowerPoint.

• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Pencil, paper, computer, Microsoft PowerPoint.

• Suggested group size: Students will work individually

• Procedures: Once the class is all seated down ask them to think of a cartoon creature in their head.

Ask the class if they would like to create the cartoon on the computer. Take the class to the computer lab

in room 2-C (they may sit wherever they like but feel free to move them around if they are not doing their

work). The computers should already be on for them, if the computer is not on, then you may try turning it

on and ask the computer teacher to sigh in for you. Once all computers are on then have the kids open

up Microsoft PowerPoint. Do not let them start until you give them the directions.

The kids have already played with PowerPoint before and know the basic tools. Tell them to create a

cartoon/ creature/ monster on PowerPoint using circles triangles retables and lines. This also should be

colored cartoon. They have one hour to get as creative as they can. Once they have finished have the

kids print off two copies of their creature. One copy is for them and the other is to be turned in to you. Tell

them that the student who can create the most creative creature in the class gets a prize. I am excited to

see what they can come up with.

• Assessment: Students will be graded on creativity and finished work.
