This ground breaking research, collected over five years of
fieldwork, focuses on the relationships between diversity
and inequality in access to mental healthcare through the
discourse practices, tactics and strategies deployed by
patients and healthcare professionals. Using the unique
setting of a public hospital in an immigrant neighborhood
of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the author deconstructs
ethnocentrism in discourse theory through locally
grounded and culturally conscious analysis of discourse
practices. Its aim is not only to describe and understand a
reality, but also to change it through action-research
