Abstract :Gear shifting mechanism plays an important role in conservation of fuel and energy. This all can be
achieved by pneumatic button operated gear shifting mechanism. This study is focussed on pneumatic system and its
design for gear shifting mechanism. There are different methods of button operated gear shifting mechanism but study
compares the methods that are used in pneumatic button operated gear shifting which is operated by pneumatic system
in which air as working fluid and another one is electro-magnetic button operated gear shifting which works on the
principle of electro-magnet. In this way these two systems will help us to change the gear as per desired speed with
minimum efforts and reduces time delays. The advance technique in gear shifting mechanism leads to flexibility and
easiness for human. Button operated gear shifting mechanism is more significant for physically handicapped users.
This system gives more benefits and reduces time delay in gear shifting.

I. INTRODUCTION

There are many methods of button operated gear shifting mechanism but in our project two methods are used
pneumatic button operated gear shifting which is operated by pneumatic system in which air as working fluid and
another one is electromagnetic button operated gear shifting which is operated by electromagnetic system which
works on principle of electromagnet. In this way these two systems will helps us to change the gear as per desired
speed. The two pneumatic cylinders will be used to operate the gear. One pneumatic cylinder is used for increasing
the gear and second cylinder is used for shifting down the gear. During gear shifting when clutch is press by the
hand at the same time button also pressed manually. DC battery will be used to activate the solenoid valve. Two
Solenoid valve will be used to pass pressure to the pneumatic cylinder when button is pressed. Before the solenoid
valve there is two ways valve which is used to give the direction to flow the air. Pneumatic pressure tank will be
used. Relay board will be used to provide supply to the solenoid valve coil. One SV will operate the in upward
fashion & another solenoid valve will operate in downward fashion.

II. EXPERIMENTAL SETUP & DESIGN ANALYSIS

A. Button Operated Pneumatic Gear Shifting System

The main component in the button operrated gear shifting is two pneumatic cylinders. These two pneumatic
cylinders are connected to the solenoid valve & gear pedal. There are two solenoid valve are connected b efore the
pneumatic cylinder. First solenoid valve is connected to the one pneumatic cylinder & second is connected to the
second pneumatic cylinder. There are DC battery is use to supply the solenoid valve. These two sole noid valve
operated with our requirement.

The pair of one solenoid valve & one pneumatic cylinder is connected to the pedal to shift the gear in upward
fashion. Second pair of solenoid valve & pneumatic cylinder is connected to the backward side of the pedal to shift
the gear in downward fashion. Both the solenoid valve is connected to the compressor to by taking the compress air
for working. These all component is connected with the small diameter pipe for making a high pressure in the
cylinder & this helps to improve the work movement of total assembly. The two pneumatic cylinders will be used to
operate the gear. One pneumatic cylinder is use for increase the gear and second cylinder is use for down the gear.
At the time of gear shifting when clutch is press by the hand at the same time button also press manually. DC battery
will be used for supply to the solenoid valve. Two Solenoid valve will be used to pass pressure to the pneumatic
cylinder when button is pressed. Before the solenoid valve there is two-way valve is used to give the direction to
flow the air. Pneumatic pressure tank will be used. Relay board will be used to provide supply to the solenoid valve
coil. One solenoid valve will operate the gear in upward fashion & another solenoid valve will operate in downward
fashion.

B. Button Operated Electro-magnetic Gear Shifting System

This system consist an electromagnetic system which will work on the principle of electromagnet. An electric
current flowing in a wire creates a magnetic field around the wire. To concentrate the magnetic field of a wire, in an
electromagnet the wire is wound into a coil, with many turns of wire lying side by side. The magnetic field of all the
turns of wire passes through the center of the coil, creating a strong magnetic field there. Some simple mechanism
will be arrange with the electromagnet and will help us to change the gear as per the desired speed. The two electro-
magnetic coils are fixed to the gear shaft of the two ends. One is used to shift the gear in upward direction. Another
one is used to shift the gear in downward direction. These two coil is operated depends upon the speed of the
vehicle this is automatically button operated electromagnetic gear changer for two wheeler. A rotational output of an
internal combustion engine is connected to drive wheels of the automobile and a load device. When a gear shifting-
up of an automatic transmission is to be effected, the load applied by the load device is increased, or the load is
connected to an output rotation shaft of the engine via a selectively-connecting device, thereby reducing the
rotational speed of the output rotation shaft of the engine to a required level. In this work, two electromagnetic coils
are coupled.

III. CONCLUSION
This Button operated gear shifting mechanism is very flexible due to its reaction time. This system having quick
response due to its simple mechanism and it is comfortable for physically handicapped people and also from
women’s point of view. Due to its simple mechanism and quick response it has very good performance in gear
shifting. It is very easier to operate over feet operated gear shifting.
