Problem 1: Consider a beam of light going from a medium 1 with refractive index n1 to a medium
2 with refractive index n2 .
a) Make a figure explaining the law of reflection and the law of refraction:
In your figure, indicate the angles θ1 , θ2 and θ1r (angles of incidence, refraction and reflection,
respectively), as well as the plane of incidence.
b) Which relation between n1 and n2 is necessary to observe total reflection? Calculate the critical
angle θ1 = θt for the onset of total reflection.
Consider now that the beam of light, given by an electromagnetic wave incident from medium 1, is
circularly polarized. We can decompose the electric field E into two linearly polarized components,
one perpendicular to the plane of incidence (⊥) and the other parallel (). The relative amplitudes of
reflection with respect to the amplitude of the incident field are given by the Fresnel equations:

R⊥ := =− (2)
E1 ⊥ sin(θ1 + θ2 )

E1r tan(θ1 − θ2 )
R := = . (3)
E1 tan(θ1 + θ2 )
(c) Calculate the so-called Brewster angle θ1 = θB for which the reflected light is linearly polarized.
(d) Consider again the total reflection of item (b) in the case θ1 > θt . Formally, θ2 is now a complex

Problem 4: An ideal gas undergoes a thermodynamical cycle which can be divided in four pro-

a pressure PC > PB . The third process is an ishothermal expansion going to a state D with the same
volume VA as the initial state. Finally, the gas undergoes another isovolumetric process that brings it
back to the initial state A.
a) Sketch the plot P × V describing the cycle and calculate the work done by the gas in a complete
cycle.
b) Calculate the entropy variation in each process of the cycle. (Hint: The internal energy of an ideal
gas depends only on the temperature through dU = Cv dT , where the heat capacity at constant

etc.). The figure below shows the variation of the magnetic entropy of a spin S = 1/2 param-
agnetic salt as a function of its temperature and magnetic field. Considering the two curves in
the figure, find a sequence of thermodynamical processes (involving T , S and B) that cools down
a system originally at 50mK and B = 0. Describe each process and sketch it in Figure 2. In
addition, find the final temperature of the system.

Problem 1: An ideal gas can be specified by three thermodynamic quantities which can be, for
example, the particle number N , its volume V and its temperature T . On the other hand, a photon gas
requires only two thermodynamic variables, as the number of photons is a function of the volume and
the temperature of the gas. Indeed, the number of particles in a photon gas contained in a volume V at
a temperature T is given by N = r V T 3 , where r = 2, 03 × 107 m−3 K −3 . Let the spectral distribution
of the photon gas be given by a black-body spectrum, such that its energy density per frequency follows
Planck’s distribution, i. e.
8πh ν3
ρ(ν) = 3 hν/(k T ) ,
c e B −1
where ν is the frequency, T the temperature and the constants h, c and kB are respectively Planck’s
constant, the speed of light and Boltzmann’s constant.

Problem 2: Consider Young’s double-slit experiment, as sketched in the figure below. The system
produces interference fringes from a source of monochromatic point light S0 , which emits at a wavelength
λ. The source S0 illuminates two narrow slits S1 and S2 separated by a distance d. The observation
screen is at distance L of the wall containing the two slits, with L d .
a) Taking the separation between the first two minima of interference as z (distance between the central
dark fringes), determine the distance d between the slits. Express your result in terms of L , λ, and
z.
b) One of the slits is covered with a thin transparent plate of parallel faces and refractive index n.
Consider that this yields a shift of m fringes in the interference figure (the bright central fringe
moves to the position that was occupied by the bright fringe of order m in the absence of the plate).
Determine the thickness of the plate x in terms of m , λ, and n.
Hint: Assume that light is perpendicularly incident on the wall containing the slits and investigate
the phase difference between the waves caused by the presence of the plate (as they reach at the slits
S1 and S2 ).

Figure 4, where again the bar is at rest. This second bar is also straight and thin, but with uniform
charge density λ2 and length L2 . What is the work done by the electric force in this process? Justify
your answer.
c) With a test charge, a researcher measures the amplitude of the electric field created by a bar similar
to the one in item (a), again at its symmetry plane. Each measurement is made at a different distance
from the center of the bar. The results are shown in figure 5. The two lines are only to guide the

Veja a figura abaixo.
I Z
@
B · d` = µ0 Ip + µ0 ✏0 E · dS,
@S @t S
onde S é uma superfı́cie aberta arbitrária, @S é a borda da superfı́cie S, e Ip é a corrente que perfura
essa superfı́cie. As constantes ✏0 e µ0 são respectivamente a permissividade elétrica e a permeabilidade
magnética do vácuo.

Problem 9: The capacitor C, in the circuit shown below, is initially charged. If the switch S is closed in

Problem 10: A point-like charge Q is located at a distance d from the centre of a semi-spherical surface with
radius R > d, as shown in the figure below.
Regarding the electric flux through the semi-spherical surface, it is correct to say that:
a) The flux that passes through the semi-spherical surface is the same as that which would cross it if d = 0.

Problem 12: An electric current passing through an infinite rectilinear wire generates a magnetic field which
only has an azimuthal component around the wire. However, when we interrupt this wire with a parallel circular
plate capacitor (radius R), although the current between the plates of the capacitor is zero, the magnetic field
is non-zero. See the figure below.
To solve this contradiction, Maxwell modified Ampère’s law by introducing the “displacement current” term.
This extra term shows that a variation of the electric field flux also generates a magnetic field, even though
there is no charge transfer. The Ampère-Maxwell law in vacuum is:
I Z
@
B · d` = µ0 Ip + µ0 ✏0 E · dS,
@S @t S
where S is an arbitrary open surface, @S is the boundary of the surface S, and IP is the current that pierces this
surface. The constants ✏0 and µ0 are respectively the electrical permittivity and the magnetic permeability of
the vacuum.
a) Evaluate the magnitude of the magnetic field at point P1 , which is at a distance R from the wire and at a
distance D from the capacitor. Assume that D R, such that in P1 the effects of the capacitor can be
neglected.
b) Assuming that the current is constant over time, evaluate how the amount of charge on the left capacitor
plate varies with time. With this result, assuming that the capacitor plates are made of metallic material
such that the charge density is uniform at all times, obtain the magnitude of the electric field generated by
these charges between the capacitor plates.
c) Neglecting the edge effects, that is, assuming that the electric field outside the capacitor is zero and the
field lines are normal to the capacitor plates, use Ampère-Maxwell’s law to evaluate the magnitude of the
magnetic field’s azimuthal component at point P2 , located at a distance r R from the axis passing through
the center of the wire. Conclude that for r = R the azimuthal component of the magnetic field in P2 has the
same magnitude as in P1 .

because part of the incident energy (and linear momentum) is transferred to the electron which was
initially at rest.
III. In Bohr’s atomic model, the frequency of the radiation emitted is associated with a transition between
two levels, and not to a single orbit as expected from classical physics.

of sources is described by
where k, ! and E0 are positive constants, ! = kc, and c is the speed of light in vacuum.

b) Draw as directed line segments (arrows) the electric field at the origin at times t1 = 0 and t2 = ⇡/(2!).

where E00 is an arbitrary constant. Determine all the possible values of E00 such that the resulting wave,
whose electric field is given by E(r, t) + E 0 (r, t), has a circular polarization. Describe, in each case, what
is the orientation of the circular polarization, that is, specifying if the electric field at a given space point
