Tony Fernandes has a keen interest in starting his own airline since childhood. He has expressed
his wish to his father when he was 6 years old but did not get the blessing and insulted by his
father. His real starting point began as an entrepreneur was when he was in London. The idea came
suddenly and spontaneously when he was watching an ad on television. He is interested in making
a low-cost carrier after seeing Easyjet, a low-cost airline in London. He then headed for Luton
Airport in London and stayed there for two days to look roughly on the service and intend to
introduce it in Malaysia and expand the concept to the Asian region. Later, he expressed his wish
to his best friend, Datuk Kamarudin Meranum, a former investment bank employee who has been
an Executive Director of AirAsia. They agreed to jointly become business partners and managed
to raise business worth RM1,000,000.00 in May 2001.

Tony Fernandes was educated at The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Starting at age
12, which is from 1976 to 1983, he studied at Epsom College boarding school in England.
However, in 1980, when he was studying there, he got news from his family in Malaysia, his
mother had passed away, but he could not go home because of the financial problems he faced.
The price of expensive airfare prevents him from returning home. Because of that, the 15-year-old
was complaining, “It would be nice if there were airlines offering cheap fares”. This is one of the
factor that motivated him to have his own airline which can be enjoyed by all groups, especially
for the subordinates.

The advantages of Tony as a far-sighted entrepreneur are accompanied by the advantages

that he has in the field of sports that he has proved. He is a great person because it is wise to balance
himself in terms of academic and sports. Since from school, he is active in sports, and has
represented several times his school in hockey team. In addition, he is a sprinter, and able to play
rugby. Surely a great person now, has a history great life.

After graduating from Form 6, he returned to Malaysia. Before his mother die, his parents
expects Tony to continue his studies in medicine. However, the heart not to continue his studies in
the field, so that happened a quarrel between him and his father. He also deliberately thwarted
himself in the A Level exam to refuse to be accepted as a major medicine. He then decided to
return to London and connect his studies at the London School of Economics (LSE).
Confidentiality of his own abilities and not easily give up on interest, eventually allowing Tan Sri
Tony Fernandes successfully completed his studies at LSE with a degree in 1987 and has working
on United Atlantic-based airline Virgin Atlantic Airways (also known as Virgin Airlines).
