BACKGROUND OF TONY FERNANDES

TONY FERNANDES

Tan Sri Anthony Francis "Tony" Fernandes, CBE is a Malaysian entrepreneur. He is the founder
of Tune Air Sdn. Bhd., who introduced the first budget no-frills airline, AirAsia, to Malaysians
with the tagline "Now everyone can fly". His home in a posh Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood.
Fernandes was born in Kuala Lumpur on 30 April 1964 to an Indian father (originally from Goa)
and a mother of mixed Indian (Malayali) and Asian-Portuguese (Kristang) descent who had been
raised in Malacca, Malaysia. At a young age, he would follow his mother who sold Tupperware at
Tupperware parties.

On 14 October 2017, Fernandes married a South Korean actress, Chloe, at Hotel Cap Estel,
in Èze on the French Riviera after having dated her for more than two years.Fernandes was
previously married to Deborah Lee Bergstrom on 1 June 1994. They had a daughter and a son,
Stephanie and Stephen.Stephanie graduated from Durham University on 26 June 2015 while her
brother was still studying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. More details about Tan Sri Anthony Francis

TYPES OF BUSINESS OWNERSHIP

AIR ASIA is the second national airline in Malaysia. With a low-cost fare afforded by
anyone, AIRASIA BERHAD's services are highly demanded. Air Asia Sdn Bhd is a privately
owned and privately owned company incorporated under the Companies Act 1965. Established
on 20 December 1993 and wholly owned by DRB-HICOM. It runs a business in the aviation
services industry. In mid-2004, Air Asia Sdn Bhd incurred too much debt. Hence it is sold to
Tune Air at a price of one dollar per share. On 8 June 2004, this type of company was changed
from a private company to a public company under the name of AIRASIA BERHAD.
The reorganization of AIRASIA BERHAD's organization with new images and concepts led to
major changes and profitability over short periods of time. AIRASIA BERHAD also
successfully revolutionized the regional aviation industry. The main purpose of AIRASIA
BERHAD is to set up an affordable flight service for all users. Hence, low cost, frequent flight
times, convenient location, and convenient, comfortable and enjoyable journey become the main
platform of AIRASIA BERHAD's business. Some of the key locations are Malaysia, Bangkok,
Thailand, Singapore, Philippines and China (Macau and Xiamen).
In August 2003, Air Asia became the world's first airline to introduce a reservation via SMS
that allows passengers to book seats, check flight schedules and get latest AIRASIA BERHAD
news promotions using their mobile phones. AIRASIA BERHAD has also introduced GO
Holiday, the airline's online program that allows passengers to book online vacation packages in
real time. This paper will touch on several key aspects of developing and planning company
projects such as overall planning, organization, leadership and control. At the end of the work
papers, some suggestions to improve the company's performance will be peeled off.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Tony Fernandes is the founder and Group CEO of AirAsia. He is also known to millions
as the face of the “Apprentice Asia” TV show, received the prestigious Award at a special Gala
Dinner in Hong Kong on 27 November for his work as an ASEAN champion. He was also
honoured with the Asia House Asian Business Leader Awards 2017.

The Asian Business Leaders Award, issued annually by Asia House, the Centre of
Expertise on Asia, aims to highlight members of the business community who have driven positive
economic and social change in the region. Previous winners include Hiroaki Nakanishi, Chairman,
Hitachi; Nazir Razak, Chairman, CIMB; and Ho Ching, CEO, Temasek Holdings.

Under Mr Fernandes’s leadership, AirAsia has grown to become the region’s leading low-
cost airline, transforming the Asian aviation industry and making it possible for millions of people
to access air travel. He has also championed greater integration and cooperation within ASEAN.
Lord Green, Chairman of Asia House, said: “As a leading Centre of Expertise on Asian business
and trade, it is important for Asia House to recognise those people making a positive contribution
to the Asian economic landscape. “Alongside his business achievements, Tony has been a tireless
advocate of ASEAN – an ethos which we share at Asia House. As ASEAN celebrates its 50th
anniversary, we thought it was a particularly pertinent time to recognise Tony with this award.”

Speaking on the announcement, Mr Fernandes said: “It is an honour to be recognised for


championing ASEAN. I am an ASEANist. I believe the future of Asia Pacific lies as much with
ASEAN as it does with China or India – it’s hard to ignore 620 million people. “However, the
promise of ASEAN lies in its unity, in cooperation, tearing down barriers, integration. In that
sense, we still have some way to go but I am confident we will get there, and I am very glad to see
Asia House join us on that journey.” Mr Fernandes will receive the prestigious award at the Asia
House Asian Business Leader Award Dinner, Asia House’s annual gala event in Hong Kong on
27 November. Nazir Razak, Chairman of CIMB, will be giving a gala address at the Dinner, taking
place at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center.
SERVICE PROVIDED

AirAsia Berhad is a Malaysian low-cost airline headquartered near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is
the largest airline in Malaysia by fleet size and destinations. AirAsia Group operates scheduled
domestic and international flights to more than 165 destinations spanning 25 countries. Its main
hub is KLIA2, the low-cost carrier terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in
Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. Its affiliate airlines Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines
AirAsia, and AirAsia India have hubs in Don Mueang International Airport, Soekarno–Hatta
International Airport, Ninoy Aquino International Airport, and Kempegowda International Airport
respectively, while its sister airline, AirAsia X, focuses on long-haul routes. AirAsia's registered
office is in Petaling Jaya, Selangor while its head office is at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

AirAsia operates with the world's lowest unit cost of US$0.023 per available seat kilometre (ASK)
and a passenger breakeven load factor of 52%. It has hedged 100% of its fuel requirements for the
next three years, achieves an aircraft turnaround time of 25 minutes, has a crew productivity level
that is better than that of Malaysia Airlines and has an average aircraft utilisation rate of 13 hours
a day. In 2007, The New York Times described the airline as a "pioneer" of low-cost travel in
Asia. AirAsia is the sponsor of Malaysia national football team, Singapore national football team
and Queens Park Rangers. AirAsia is also a former sponsor of Manchester United and Asia Red
Tour. AirAsia has consistently been named as the world's best low cost carrier for 9 years in a row
in international travel and airline awards, including the latest award for 2017.
HOW DID TONY FERNANDES START TO BE ENTREPRENEUR

Tony Fernandes has a keen interest in starting his own airline since childhood. He has expressed
his wish to his father when he was 6 years old but did not get the blessing and insulted by his
father. His real starting point began as an entrepreneur was when he was in London. The idea came
suddenly and spontaneously when he was watching an ad on television. He is interested in making
a low-cost carrier after seeing Easyjet, a low-cost airline in London. He then headed for Luton
Airport in London and stayed there for two days to look roughly on the service and intend to
introduce it in Malaysia and expand the concept to the Asian region. Later, he expressed his wish
to his best friend, Datuk Kamarudin Meranum, a former investment bank employee who has been
an Executive Director of AirAsia. They agreed to jointly become business partners and managed
to raise business worth RM1,000,000.00 in May 2001.
TONY FERNANDES’S EDUCATION.

Tony Fernandes was educated at The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Starting at age
12, which is from 1976 to 1983, he studied at Epsom College boarding school in England.
However, in 1980, when he was studying there, he got news from his family in Malaysia, his
mother had passed away, but he could not go home because of the financial problems he faced.
The price of expensive airfare prevents him from returning home. Because of that, the 15-year-old
was complaining, “It would be nice if there were airlines offering cheap fares”. This is one of the
factor that motivated him to have his own airline which can be enjoyed by all groups, especially
for the subordinates.

The advantages of Tony as a far-sighted entrepreneur are accompanied by the advantages


that he has in the field of sports that he has proved. He is a great person because it is wise to balance
himself in terms of academic and sports. Since from school, he is active in sports, and has
represented several times his school in hockey team. In addition, he is a sprinter, and able to play
rugby. Surely a great person now, has a history great life.

After graduating from Form 6, he returned to Malaysia. Before his mother die, his parents
expects Tony to continue his studies in medicine. However, the heart not to continue his studies in
the field, so that happened a quarrel between him and his father. He also deliberately thwarted
himself in the A Level exam to refuse to be accepted as a major medicine. He then decided to
return to London and connect his studies at the London School of Economics (LSE).
Confidentiality of his own abilities and not easily give up on interest, eventually allowing Tan Sri
Tony Fernandes successfully completed his studies at LSE with a degree in 1987 and has working
on United Atlantic-based airline Virgin Atlantic Airways (also known as Virgin Airlines).
HISTORY OF TONY FERNANDES TO ACHIEVE A SUCCESS.

Tony Fernandes , founder of Tune Group , is the group of CEO Air Asia , Asia’s leading low fare
, no frill air line , flying to destination across the region . Known as Richard Branson of Asian air
travel , he turned the bankrupt carrier into the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline (Skytrax’s coveted
award for five years in a row 2009 – 2013) and has revolutionized the aviation industry in Asean.

Tony is CNBC’s Asia Innovator of the year 2013 , winner of CQ India’s International Businessman
of year 2012 , and Malaysian Investor Relations Association’s Best CEO for Investor Relations –
Mid Cap for 2012 . In 2011 , he was named Panglima Setia Mahkota (Commander of the Order of
the Malaysia ) which carries the title ‘Tan Sri’ , one of the highest Malaysia’s honours , and in that
same year , he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his
services in promoting commercial and educational links between UK and Malaysia .

After graduating from the London School of Economics in 1987 , he worked as an accountant for
Richard Barsnon’s Virgin Records from 1987 – 1989 . Upon his return to Malaysia , the amateur
guitarist went on to becomes the youngest-ever managing director of Southeast Asia for Warner
Music Group (Malaysia) , and subsequently becames vice-president in the commercial airline with
debt 40 million ringgit , at the token fee one ringgit (US$ 0.25) , turning it into a highly successful
budget air line public-listed company .

Coming just after 11 September 2001 , undoubtedly the worst day in the history of commercial
aviation when nobody wanted to fly , everyone predicted that the company would fail miserably .
Yet , just one years after he takeover , Air Asia had broken even and cleared all its debts . Its initial
public offering (IPO) in November 2004 was oversubscribe by 130 per cent . Introducing Air Asia
to Malaysians with the tagline “Now everyone can fly” . Tony thinks that about 50 per cent of
traveler of the Asia’s budget airlines are first time flyers . Before Air Asia , he estimates that only
six percent of Malaysians had ever travelled in a plane . Tony was also instrumental in lobbying
in then-Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad in mid-2003 , to propose the idea
of open skies agreements with neighbouring Thailand , Indonesia , and Singapore . As a result ,
this nation has granted landing right to Air Asia and other discount carriers .
In 2009 , Tony became the President of the ABL (Asian Basketball League) , the only professional
regional basketball league in ASEAN , run by Tune Sports . Tune Group also invested in Caterham
F1 Team (formerly Lotus Racing F1 team) in 2009 . to provide in avenue for the youth in ASEAN
to advance in the global sport scene . They created a team which registered the best performance
among F1 newcomers in 2010 and it was renamed Caterham F1 Team in late 2011 . Tune Group
has also set up Tune Money (a financial services company ), Tune tones (which engages in media
and creative industry projects and promote local and international talent) and Tune Talk ( which
provides affordable mobile phone services in all 10 ASEAN countries .

In August 2010, Tony officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of Epsom College in Malaysia.
A product of Epsom College in the UK, he has taken a special interest in offering world-class
education, with emphasis on holistic development and invested in the establishment of an Epsom
school in Malaysia. The school is being completed inside the 50-acre Kuala Lumpur Education
City, and will open in September 2013, with Tony as chairman of the Board of Governors.

1. High Aspiration
