FOREWORD
We are living on the brink of eternity. The Lord has a special message for
His people today. "The Laodicean message has been sounding. Take this mes-
sage in all its phases and sound it forth to the people wherever Providence opens
the way. Justification by faith and the righteousness of Christ are the themes
to be presented to a perishing world" (The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White
Comments], vol. 7, p. 964).
"The message to the church of the Laodiceans is a startling denunciation,
and is applicable to the people of God at the present time."-Testimonies, vol. 3,
p.252.
To whom is this message addressed? It is easy to assume that it is meant
for someone else, for some other church, some other denomination. Yet if we
refuse to check and see if the message may also in some way apply to each of
us as individuals, we would be guilty of the very problem against which the
message is warning! So, let us take this message to heart, and benefit from its
truth. Let us each say in our hearts, "This is speaking to me personally." And if
in doubt, just keep in mind the wise saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a
,pound of cure." Remember, the Spirit of Prophecy refers to the Laodicean con-
dition as a tendency pertaining to the entire class of those who profess to fol-
low Christ in the last days. Therefore it would include us all, regardless of or-
ganizational affiliation or church office. Nature's laws of heredity teach us that
if a mother (church) tends toward a certain sickness, her progeny tends to-
ward the same disease, unless preventive action is taken.
"The Lord calls for a renewal of the straight testimony borne in years past.
He calls for a renewal of spiritual life. The spiritual energies of His people have
long been torpid, but there is to be a resurrection from apparent death. By prayer
and confession of sin we must clear the King's highway. As we do this, the power
of the Spirit will come to us. We need the Pentecostal energy. This will come,
for the Lord has promised to send His Spirit as the all-conquering power."-
Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 297, 298. .
In the period of Laodicea there is hope only for those believers who, by
following the counsel of the True Witness (Revelation 3:18, 19), come nut of
the Laodicean condition. Let us make sure that we really belong to this class of
believers-the ones who are not content to sit back and be Laodiceans, but rather
are delivered from the prevailing syndrome of this era. The lessons for this quar-
ter are designed to bring each Sabbath school student into a closer experience
with Christ. He is our Saviour, Lord and King.
"The message to the Laodicean church is highly applicable to us as a people.
It has been placed before us for a long time, but has not been heeded as it should
have been. When the work of repentance is earnest and deep, the individual
members of the church will buy the rich goods ofheaven."-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 961.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 3

To Whom Is Christ Speaking?
"Mark the following words: 'Because thou sayest, I am rich, and
increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that
thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked'
(Revelation 3:17). Here is represented a people who pride themselves
in their possession of spiritual knowledge and advantages. But they
have not responded to the unmerited blessings that God has bestowed
upon them. They have been full of rebellion, ingratitude, and forget-
fulness of God; and still He has dealt with them as a'loving, forgiving
father deals with an ungrateful, wayward son. They have resisted His
grace, abused His privileges, slighted His opportunities, and have been
satisfied to sink down in contentment, in lamentable ingratitude, hollow
formalism, and hypocritical insincerity. With Pharisaic pride they have
vaunted themselves till it has been said of them, 'Thou sayest, I am
rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing.'
"Has not the Lord Jesus sent message after message of rebuke,
of warning, of entreaty, to these self-satisfied ones? Have not His coun-
sels been despised and rejected? Have not His delegated messengers
been treated with scorn, and their words been received as idle tales?"-
Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 357, 358.
''The Laodicean message is applicable to the church at this time.
Do you believe this message? Have you hearts that feel? Or are you
constantly saying, We are rich and increased in goods, and have need
of nothing? Is it in vain that the declaration of eternal truth has been
given to this nation to be carried to all the nations of the world? God
has chosen a people and made them the repositories of truth weighty
with eternal results. To them has been given the light that must illu-
minate the world. Has God made a mistake? Are we indeed His cho-
sen instrumentalities? Are we the men and women who are to bear
to the world the messages of Revelation fourteen, to proclaim the
message of salvation to those who are standing on the brink of ruin?
Do we act as if we were?"-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, pp. 961, 962.
"We may have flattered ourselves, as did Nicodemus, that our life
has' been upright, that our moral character is correct, and think that
we need not humble the heart before God, like the common sinner:
but when the light from Christ shines into our souls, we shall see
how impure we are; we shall discern the selfishness of motive, the
enmity against God, that has defiled every act of life. Then we shall
know that our own righteousness is indeed as filthy rags, and that
the blood of Christ alone can cleanse us from the defilement of sin,
and renew our hearts in His own likeness."~Steps to Christ, pp. 28, 29.

Living in the Laodicean Era
"Unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things
saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the cre-
ation of God; I know thy works" (Revelation 3:14, 15).

"The Laodicean message applies to the people of God who profess to

believe present truth. The greater part are lukewarm professors, having a
name but no zeal."-Testimonies, vol 4, p. 87.

AN INSPIRED MESSAGE March 30

1. By whom was the book of Revelation given and for what purpose?
Revelation 1: 1, 9-18.

"Jesus Christ is the great trustee of divine revelation. It is through Him

that we have a knowledge of what we are to look for in the closing scenes
of this earth's history. God gave this revelation to Christ, and Christ com-
municated the same to John."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, p. 953.

2. What benefits are to be derived by those who accept the prophetic

inspiration of the Revelation of Jesus Christ? Revelation 1: 3.

"The book of Revelation opens to the world what has been, what is, and
what is to come; it is for our instruction upon whom the ends of the world
are come. It should be studied with reverential awe. We are privileged in
knowing what is for our learning."-The Review and Herald, August 31,1897.
o Monday
GIVEN FOR US TODAY March 31

3. How do we know that the seven churches named in Revelation

represent distinct time periods in the Christian Era, rather than
specific church organizations? Revelation 1 :20.

"The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in differ-
ent periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness, and
is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 5

the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in
the history of the world."- The Acts o/the Apostles, p. 585.

4. To whom is the Laodicean message to be given in these last days?

Revelation 3: 14 (first part).

"I tell you in the name of the Lord, that those who have had great light
are today in the state described by Christ in His message to the Laodicean
church."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.
"The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition.
How plainly is pictured the position of those who think they have all the
truth, who take pride in their knowledge of the word of God, while its sanc-
tifying power has not been felt in their lives. The fervor of the love of God
is wanting in their hearts, but it is this very fervor of love that makes God's
people the light of the world."- The Review and Herald, July 23, 1889.
"The warning for the last church also must be proclaimed to all who
claim to be Christians. The Laodicean message, like a sharp, two-edged
sword, must go to all the churches."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 77.
o Tuesday
CHRIST SEES ALL April 1

5. What expression of eternal omniscience is given by the True Wit-

ness in each of the seven church periods?

Ephesus -Revelation 2:1, 2 (first part).

Smyrna -Revelation 2:8, 9 (first part).
Pergamos -Revelation 2:13 (first part).
Thyatira -Revelation 2:19 (first part).
Sardis -Revelation 3:1 (first part).
Philadelphia -Revelation 3:8 (first part).
Laodicea -Revelation 3:15 (first part).

"The words fall from the lips of One who cannot lie. The picture reveals
eternal vigilance. Christ is in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks,
walking from church to church, from congregation to congregation, .from
heart to heart. He that keepeth Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps ....Christ
walks in the midst of His churches through the length and breadth of the
earth. He looks with intense interest to see whether His people are in such
a condition spiritually that they can advance His kingdom. He is present in
every assembly of the church."-The Review and Herald, May 26,1903.
"Let all remember that there is not a motive in the heart of any man
that the Lord does not clearly see. The motives of each one are weighed as
carefully as if the destiny of the human agent depended upon this one re-
sult. ... God in heaven is true, and there is not a design, however intricate,
or a motive, however carefully hidden, that He does not clearly understand.
He reads the secret devisings of every heart."-In Heavenly Places, p. 156.

6 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

6. How does God evaluate the spiritual condition of churches and their
membership? Matthew 7: 16-20.

"The deeds of a man's life are the fruit he bears."-Testimonies, vol. 4,

p.311.
"The True Witness declares: 'I know thy works.' The selfish, covetous
heart will be tested. Some are not willing to devote to God a very small por-
tion of the increase of their earthly treasure. They would start back with
horror if you should speak of the principal. What have they sacrificed for
God? Nothing. They profess to believe that Jesus is coming; but their works
deny their faith. Every person will live out all the faith he has. Falsehearted
professor, Jesus knows thy works. He hates your stinted offerings, your lame
sacrifices."-Ibid., vol. 1, p. 195.
"If every man who has influence could ascend some mount of vision
from which he could behold all his works as Christ beholds them when He
declares, 'I know thy works'; if the laborer could trace from cause to effect
every objectionable word and act, the sight would be more than he could
bear."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 963.

APPLYING THE MESSAGE April 2

7. What must each of us understand when studying the message to

Laodicea? 2 Corinthians 10:12.

"It was not the design of the message to lead brother to sit in judgment
over his brother, to tell him what to do, and just how far to go; but for each
individual to search his own heart, and attend to his own individual work."-
Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2, p. 223.

8. What is necessary in order for each of us to fully receive this

message? Psalm 95:6-9.

"The testimony to the Laodiceans applies to God's people at the present

time, and the reason it has not accomplished a greater work is because of
the hardness of their hearts. But God has given the message time to do its
work. The heart must be purified from sins which have so long shut out
Jesus. This fearful message will do its work. When it was first presented, it
led to close examination of heart. Sins were confessed, and the people of
God were stirred everywhere. Nearly all believed that this message would
end in the loud cry of the third angel. But as they failed to see the powerful
work accomplished in a short time, many lost the effect of the message. I
saw that this message would not accomplish its work in a few short months.
It is designed to arouse the people of God, to discover to them their
backslidings, and to lead to zealous repentance, that they may be favored
with the presence of Jesus, and be fitted for the loud cry of the third an-
gel."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 186.

OPENING TO THE WORD OF LIFE April 3

9. Who is the Faithful and True Witness, the Source of creation, that
addresses the angel of the church of Laodicea? Revelation 3: 14;
John 1:1-3.

10. Though we may be often tempted to apply this message only to

others, what appeal does Christ make to each one of us? Matthew
11:29; 1 Corinthians 10:12.

"Christ sees that which man does not see. He sees the sins which, if
not repented of, will exhaust the patience of a long-suffering God. Christ
cannot take up the names of those who are satisfied in their own self-suffi-
ciency. He cannot importune in behalf of a people who feel no need of His
help, who claim to know and possess everything....
"Let us consider our condition before God; let us heed the counsel of
the True Witness. Let none of us be filled with prejudice, as were the Jews,
that light may not come into our hearts. Let it not be necessary for Christ
to say of us as He did of them, 'Ye will not come to me, that ye might have
life.' "-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 358.
"Many are Laodiceans, living in a spiritual self-deception. They clothe
themselves in the garments of their own righteousness, imagining them-
selves to be rich and increased with goods and in need of nothing, when
they need daily to learn of Jesus, His meekness and lowliness, else they
find themselves bankrupt, their whole life being a lie."- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.

Special Mission Offering
for a Missionary Boat on the Amazon River
Brazil is a federal republic occupying nearly half the continent of South
America-an area of 3,286,488 square miles (8,511,965 square kilometers).
It was formed when all the Portuguese-speaking colonies in the Western
Hemisphere were united into one huge country.
A significant feature of Brazilian geography is the warm, humid Upper
Amazon Basin-the greatest river basin of the tropical world. Because of
the tremendous ecological benefit of the Amazon area, it has been the fo-
cus of international attention in recent years, being referred to as "The Lung
of the World."
The current population of Brazil is over 161 million, and 89% are re-
portedly Roman Catholic. Although adherents to other religions constitute
only the remaining 11% of the people, they nevertheless enjoy full freedom
of worship.
In 1924, a few SDA Reform Movement brethren escaping religious per-
secution in Europe arrived in Brazil. The work was organized in 1928, and
the message of reformation flourished, mainly due to the emphasis placed
on the publication and distribution of literature. By 1960, the present truth
had spread all the way to the far northwestern state of Amazonas. Nearly
11,000,000 souls inhabit the entire Amazon region, and many among them
are very open to the present truth.
Missionary efforts have steadily borne fruit throughout most of Brazil
to such an extent that it became necessary to organize the work into the
South Brazilian Union and the North Brazilian Union. However, progress
specifically in the Amazon area has been slow because of two obstacles: 1)
lack of transportation and 2) poor communication. Most of the local inhab-
itants live close to the river banks, and since few roads exist and travel by
air is quite costly, much of the region is accessible only by boat.
In view of this unique situation, acquiring a boat for evangelism along
the mighty Amazon is an important priority for the finishing of the Lord's
work. By this means, our publications, colporteurs, Bible workers, and min-
isters can accomplish much toward enlightening that remote corner of the
globe known as "The Lung of the World."
Dear brethren, when the Special Mission Offering for the missionary
boat is gathered on Sabbath, April 5, 1997, please give generously, that the
powerful light of God's glory may shine in the dark recesses of the vast
Amazon region.

A Lukewarm People
"I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: 1 would thou
wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold
nor hot, 1 will spue thee out of my mouth" (Revelation 3:15, 16).

"The message to the church of the Laodiceans applies especially to the

people of God today. It is a message to professing Christians who have be-
come so much like the world that no difference can be seen."- The SDA Bible
Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 959.

o Sunday
"COLD" April 6

1. Describe the religious life of those whom Jesus refers to as "cold".

Ephesians 2:11, 12.

2. Why is there often more hope for many who start off "cold" than for
some who have long made a high profession of piety? Matthew
21:28-32.

"Many poor outcasts, even publicans and sinners, will grasp the hope
set before them in the gospel and will go into the kingdom of heaven be-
fore the ones who have had great opportunities and great light, but who
have walked in darkness. In the last great day many will say: 'Lord, Lord,
open unto us.' But the door will be shut, and their knock will be in vain."-
Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 75.
"Brethren, while you as a people profess to have light far in advance of
other denominations, your works do not correspond with your profession.
Many who have been in the darkness of error gladly accept the truth when
it is opened to their understanding. Although they have spent their life in
sin, yet when they come to God in penitence and with a sense of their sin-
fulness they are accepted of Him. Such persons are in a more favorable po-
sition for the perfection of Christian character than are those who have had
great light and have failed to improve upon it. That which leaves men and
women in darkness is their neglect to improve the light and opportunities
granted them. Christ hates all vain pretense. When on earth, He ever treated
with tenderness the penitent, even though they had been the chief of sin-
ners; but His denunciation fell heavily upon all hypocrisy."-Ibid., vol. 4, pp.
614,615.

o Monday
"HOT" April 7

3. What does Jesus mean by the term "hot"? 2 Corinthians 7: 11; Titus
2:11-14.

"The labor of love springs from the work of faith....We are to be zeal-
ous of good works; be careful to maintain good works. And the true Wit-
ness says, 'I know thy works.'
"While it is true that our busy activities will not in themselves ensure
salvation, it is also true that faith which unites us to Christ will stir the soul
to activity."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1111.

4. Explain the difference between false religious zeal and genuine

Christian fervor. Romans 10: 1-3.

"There is a noisy zeal, without aim or purpose, which is not according

to knowledge, which is blind in its operations and destructive in its results.
This is not Christian zeal. Christian zeal is controlled by principle and is
not spasmodic. It is earnest, deep, and strong, engaging the whole soul and
arousing to exercise the moral sensibilities. The salvation of souls and the
interests of the kingdom of God are matters of the highest importance. What
object is there that calls for greater earnestness than the salvation of souls
and the glory of God? ...
"There is much talking, much professed love for perishing souls; but
talk is cheap stuff. It is earnest Christian zeal that is wanted-a zeal that
will be manifested by doing something. All must now work for themselves,
and when they have Jesus in their hearts they will confess Him to others.
No more could a soul who possesses Christ be hindered from confessing
Him than could the waters of Niagara be stopped from flowing over the
falls."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 232, 233.
o Tuesday
LUKEWARM AND HALFHEARTED April 8

5. What is the lukewarm Laodicean trying to do with his life-and what

is the result? Matthew 6:24.

"Those who should be faithful and true, fervent in Christian zeal, of gra-
cious temper, knowing and loving Jesus earnestly, are found aiding the en-
emy to weaken and discourage those whom God is using to build up the
work. The term 'lukewarm' is applicable to this class. They profess to love
the truth, yet are deficient in Christian fervor and devotion. They dare not
give up wholly and run the risk of the unbeliever, yet they are unwilling to
die to self and follow out closely the principles of their faith....
"Like lukewarm water, they are nauseous to [the True Witness'] taste.
They are neither unconcerned nor selfishly stubborn. They do not engage

12 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

thoroughly and heartily in the work of God, identifying themselves with its
interests; but they hold aloof and are ready to leave their posts when their
worldly personal interests demand it."-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 87, 88.
"Halfhearted Christians are worse than infidels; for their deceptive words
and noncommital position lead many astray. The infidel shows his colors.
The lukewarm Christian deceives both parties. He is neither a good world-
ling nor a good Christian. Satan uses him to do a work that no one else can
do."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 963.

6. Describe the sad condition which may be found even among many
who profess to believe the three angels' messages. Luke 6:49.

"Love of self excludes the love of Christ. Those who live for self are
ranged under the head of the Laodicean church who are lukewarm, neither
cold nor hot. The ardor of the first love has lapsed into a selfish egotism.
The love of Christ in the heart is expressed in the actions. If love for Christ
is dull, the love for those for whom Christ has died will degenerate. There
may be a wonderful appearance for zeal and ceremonies, but this is the sub-
stance of their self-inflated religion. Christ represents them as nauseating
to His taste."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.
"The Laodicean message applies to all who profess to keep the law of
God, and yet are not doers of it. We are not to be selfish in anything. Every
phase of the Christian life is to be a representation of the life of Christ. If it
is not, we shall hear the terrible words, 'I know you not.' "-Ibid.
o Wednesday
THE NATURAL MAN April 9

7. Why is no person qualified to boast about his achievements and

good works? Ephesians 2:8-10.

8. By what are we too often deceived and made proud? Jeremiah 17:9.

"Man's great danger is in being self-deceived, indulging self-sufficiency,

and thus separating from God, the source of his strength. Our natural ten-
dencies, unless corrected by the Holy Spirit of God, have in them the seeds
of moral death. Unless we become vitally connected with God, we cannot
resist the unhallowed effects of self-love, self-indulgence, and temptation
to sin."- Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 315, 316.
"Satan can lead deceived souls to great lengths. He can pervert their
judgment, their sight, and their hearing."-Ibid., vol. 3, p. 351.

DANGER OF BEING REJECTED April 10

9. What does it mean to be "spued out" of Christ's mouth? Revelation

3: 15, 16. Is Christ speaking only to the membership or also to the
ministers?

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 13

"God brings against ministers and people the heavy charge of spiritual
feebleness, saying, [Revelation 3:15, 16 quoted]."-Selected Messages, book
1, p. 127.
"To those who do not practice it, the Word of God is a dead letter. Christ
says of such, [Revelation 3:16 quoted.] He cannot present their case to the
Father. If they realized that they were sinners, He could plead in their be-
half, and the Lord would arouse them by His Holy Spirit. But they are worse
than dead in trespasses and sins. They hear the Word, but make no appli-
cation of it to themselves; instead, they apply the Word spoken to their neigh-
bors."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 963.

10. As we are living in the Laodicean era, what admonitions ought each
of us to heed? 2 Corinthians 13:5.

"Those who have no time to give attention to their own souls, to exam-
ine themselves daily whether they be in the love of God, and place them-
selves in the channel of light, will have time to give to the suggestions of

Laodicean Symptoms
"Thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need
of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and
poor, and blind, and naked" (Revelation 3: 1 7).

"The people of God are represented in the message to the Laodiceans

be in an exalted condition of spiritual attainments."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 252.

SELF-PROCLAIMED WEALTH April 13

1. What will happen to those who trust in their own gifts, qualities, and
merits? Obadiah 3,4; Proverbs 16:18.

"Self-exaltation is a dangerous element. It tarnishes everything it touches.

It is the offspring of pride, and it works so ingeniously that, unless guarded
against, it will take possession of the thoughts and control the actions.
"The Laodicean message must be proclaimed with power; for now it is
especially applicable. Now, more than ever before, are seen pride, worldly
ambition, self-exaltation, double-dealing, hypocrisy, and deception."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.

2. Describe the tendency of today's generation, both in the world and

in the church. Proverbs 30:12, 13; Ezekiel 33:31, 32. In view of
this, what should each of us prayerfully consider?

"Those who have had great light are today in the state described by
Christ in His message to the Laodicean church. They think that they are
rich, and increased in goods, and feel that they have need of nothing. Christ
speaks to you. Hear, 0 hear, if you have any regard for your souls, the words
of the great Counselor, and act upon them."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.

VIVID ILLUSTRATIONS April 14

3. How might the Laodicean condition be pictured? Ecclesiastes 10: 1.

What should we all learn from this?

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 15

"Those whom Christ warns have some excellent qualifications, but they
are neutralized by all who have a diseased self-love, self-deception, self-
justification for gross neglect to help brethren in the service of God by en-
couraging words and deeds. There is a dead fly in the ointment. They are
being weighed by One who never makes a mistake. He tells the result of
actions which demonstrate that the love of Christ is not an abiding prin-
ciple in the soul. God calls upon you all to learn from Christ His meekness.
Put away your faculty for seeing the mistakes of others. Turn your atten-
tion to your own defects. Your self-righteousness is nauseating to the Lord
Jesus Christ. [Revelation 3: 15-18 quoted.] These words apply to the churches
and to many of those in positions of trust in the work of God."-The SDA
Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.

4. What basic truth mustwe realize? Matthew 16:24.

"There are a large number of professing Christians who do not really

follow Jesus. They do not bear the cross by proper self-denial and self-
sacrifice. Although making a great profession of being earnest Christians,
they weave into the fabric of their character so many of the threads of their
own imperfections that the beautiful pattern is spoiled. Of them Christ says:
'You boast of being rich and increased with supposed spiritual attainments.
In reality you are neither cold nor hot, but are filled with vain conceit. Un-
less converted, you cannot be saved; for you would mar heaven with your
unsanctified wisdom.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments],
vol. 7, p. 963.

ONE TYPE OF LAODICEAN April 15

5. What serious error is found even among many who profess to believe
the three angels' messages? James 1:23,24.

"By the cry, Liberality, men are blinded to the devices of their adver-
sary, while he is all the time working steadily for the accomplishment of
his object. As he succeeds in supplanting the Bible by human speculations,
the law of God is set aside, and the churches are under the bondage of sin
while they claim to be free."-The Great Controversy, p. 522.
"Those who are unwilling to accept the plain, cutting truths of the Bible
are continually seeking for pleasing fables that will quiet the conscience.
The less spiritual, self-denying, and humiliating the doctrines presented,
the greater the favor with which they are received."-Ibid., p. 523.

6. How can we discern this snare and shun it? 1 John 2:3, 4.

"Many are led to think that they are on the road to heaven because they
profess to believe in Christ, while they reject the law of God. But they will
find at last that they were on the way to perdition instead of heaven. Spiri-
tual poison is sugarcoated with the doctrine of sanctification, and adminis-
16 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997
tered to the people. Thousands eagerly swallow it, feeling that if they are
only honest in their belief they will be safe. But sincerity will not convert
error to truth. A man may swallow poison, thinking it is food; but his sin-
cerity will not save him from the effects of the dose....
"Men have hardened their hearts against the Spirit of God, but the ar-
rows of His wrath will pierce where the arrows of conviction could not. God
will not far hence arise to deal with the sinner. Will the false shepherd shield
the transgressor in that day? Can he be excused who went with the multi-
tude in the path of disobedience? Will popularity or numbers make any guilt-
less? These are questions which the careless and indifferent should con-
sider and settle for themselves."-Faith and Works, pp. 32, 33.

ANOTHER TYPE OF LAODICEAN April 16

7. In contrast to the liberal type, describe the opposite extreme in

attitude which ensnares many a Laodicean believer. Matthew 23:4-
7,14,23-25,27.

''The effort of Satan has been to corrupt the [Laodicean] message, and de-
stroy its influence. He would be better pleased to have fanatical persons em-
brace the testimony, and use it in his cause, than to have them remain in a luke-
warm state."-The SDABible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 962.
"It is the desire and plan of Satan to bring in among us those who will
go to great extremes-people of narrow minds, who are critical and sharp,
and very tenacious in holding their own conceptions of what the truth means.
They will be exacting, and will seek to enforce rigorous duties, and go to
great lengths in matters of minor importance, while they neglect the weightier
matters of the law-judgment and mercy and the love of God." -Evangelism,
p.212.

8. What sad conclusion does Jesus proclaim upon those who harbor
such a Pharisaical attitude? Matthew 23:28, 38.

"On the one hand, religionists generally have divorced the law and the
gospel, while we have, on the other hand, almost done the same from an-
other standpoint. We have not held up before the people the righteousness
of Christ and the full significance of His great plan of redemption. We have
left out Christ and His matchless love, brought in theories and reasonings,
and preached argumentative discourses."-Faith and Works, pp. 15, 16.

LAODICEANS IN NEED April 17

9. Describe the condition of many Laodiceans who will not be ready for
the coming of Christ, yet are not hypocrites. Matthew 25: 1-3, 6-10.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 17

"We have a great truth, but through careless indifference the truth has
lost its force upon us. Satan has come in with his specious temptations, and
has led the professed followers of Christ away from their Leader, classing
them with the foolish virgins."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 130.
"The class represented by the foolish virgins are not hypocrites. They
have a regard for the truth, they have advocated the truth, they are attracted
to those who believe the truth; but they have not yielded themselves to the
Holy Spirit's working. They have not fallen upon the Rock, Christ Jesus,
and permitted their old nature to be broken up.... The class represented
by the foolish virgins have been content with a superficial work."-Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 411.

10. How does Christ evaluate the Laodicean state? Revelation 3: 17.
What is the only hope for this condition? Isaiah 6:5 (first part).

"The Laodicean message must be proclaimed with power; for now it is

especially applicable.... Not to see our own deformity is not to see the
beauty of Christ's character. When we are fully awake to our own sinful-
ness, we shall appreciate Christ. ... Not to see the marked contrast between
Christ and ourselves is not to know ourselves. He who does not abhor him-
self cannot understand the meaning of redemption."-The Review and Her-
ald, Sept. 25, 1900.
"Looking at the cross of Calvary, you will have a desire to bear the cross.
A world's Redeemer hung upon the cross of Calvary. Behold the Saviour of
the world, in whom dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Can any
look and behold the sacrifice of God's dear Son, and their hearts not be melted
and broken, ready to surrender to God heart and soul?"-Faith and Works, p. 16.

TIME TO WAKE UP April 20

1. How does our view of ourselves tend to contradict reality as seen by

the True Witness? Proverbs 21:2. Explain how this problem is
accentuated in the Laodicean condition.
"What greater deception can come upon human minds than a confidence
that they are right when they are all wrong! The message of the True Wit-
ness finds the people of God in a sad deception, yet honest in that decep-
tion. They know not that their condition is deplorable in the sight of God.
While those addressed are flattering themselves that they are in an exalted
spiritual condition, the message of the True Witness breaks their security
by the startling denunciation of their true condition of spiritual blindness,
poverty, and wretchedness. The testimony, so cutting and severe, cannot
be a mistake, for it is the True Witness who speaks, and His testimony must
be correct."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 252, 253.

2. What does the True Witness say to warn every lukewarm believer
away from the wrong path and to guide them aright? Proverbs 14: 12;
Isaiah 30:21; Matthew 7:13,14.

"It is difficult for those who feel secure in their attainments, and who
believe themselves to be rich in spiritual knowledge, to receive the mes-
sage which declares that they are deceived and in need of every spiritual
grace. The unsanctified heart is 'deceitful above all things, and desperately
wicked.' I was shown that many are flattering themselves that they are good
Christians, who have not a ray of light from Jesus. They have not a living
experience for themselves in the divine life. They need a deep and thorough
work of self-abasement before God before they will feel their true need of
earnest, persevering effort to secure the precious graces of the Spirit."-

IN A STATE OF DROWSINESS Apri121

3. Name one important reason for the message of the True Witness to
the Laodiceans. Romans 13:11,12.

ception is upon our people, which makes it necessary to come to them with
warnings, to break their spiritual slumber, and arouse them to decided ac-
tion."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 254.

4. How does this message parallel the warning Jesus gave to the
Pharisees who persecuted the man who had been born blind? John
9:39-41.

"In my last vision I was shown that even this decided message of the
True Witness had not accomplished the design of God. The people slum-
ber on in their sins. They continue to declare themselves rich and having
need of nothing. Many inquire: Why are all these reproofs given? Why do
the Testimonies continually charge us with backsliding and with grievous
sins? We love the truth; we are prospering; we are in no need of these testi-
monies of warning and reproof. But let these murmurers see their hearts
and compare their lives with the practical teachings of the Bible, let them
humble their souls before God, let the grace of God illuminate the dark-
ness, and the scales will fall from their eyes, and they will realize their true
spiritual poverty and wretchedness."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 254. [Author's ital-

5. What appeal did Jesus make to His sleepy disciples in an hour of

spiritual crisis? Matthew 26:40,41.

"[The disciples] did not intend to forsake their Lord, but they seemed
paralyzed by a stupor which they might have shaken off if they had contin-
ued pleading with God. They did not realize the necessity of watchfulness
and earnest prayer in order to withstand temptation."-The Desire ofAges, p.
688.

6. What appeal is Jesus making to His people now, in the spiritual

crisis of these last days? Luke 21 :36.

"In consideration of the shortness of time we as a people should watch

and pray, and in no case allow ourselves to be diverted from the solemn
work of preparation for the great event before us. Because the time is ap-
parently extended, many have become careless and indifferent in regard

to their words and actions. They do not realize their danger and do not see
and understand the mercy of our God in lengthening their probation, that
they may have time to form characters for the future, immortal life. Every
moment is of the highest value. Time is granted them, not to be employed
in studying their own ease and becoming dwellers on the earth, but to be
used in the work of overcoming every defect in their own characters and in
helping others, by example and personal effort, to see the beauty of holi-
ness."-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 306, 307.

A DEADLY DEFECT April 23

7. How does the Laodicean believer tend to repeat the problem which
characterized God's people in the days ofJeremiah? Jeremiah 5: 1-4.

"I have been shown that the greatest reason why the people of God are
now found in this state of spiritual blindness is that they will not receive
correction. Many have despised the reproofs and warnings given them. The
True Witness condemns the lukewarm condition of the people of God, which
gives Satan great power over them in this waiting, watching time. The self-
ish, the proud, and the lovers of sin are ever assailed with doubts. Satan
has ability to suggest doubts and to devise objections to the pointed testi-
mony that God sends, and many think it a virtue, a mark of intelligence in
them, to be unbelieving and to question and quibble. Those who desire to
doubt will have plenty of room. God does not propose to remove all occa-
sion for unbelief. He gives evidence, which must be carefully investigated
with a humble mind and a teachable spirit, and all should decide from the
weight of evidence."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 255.
"As increased light is given, men must be reformed, elevated, and re-
fined by it, or they will be more perverse and stubborn than before the light
came."-Gospel Workers, p. 162.

8. What major character flaw is the True Witness yearning to help His
people overcome? Proverbs 15:10.

"Very many feel impatient and jealous because they are frequently dis-
turbed with warnings and reproofs which keep their sins before them. Says
the True Witness: 'I know thy works.' The motives, the purposes, the un-
belief, the suspicions and jealousies may be hid from men, but not from
Christ."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 256.
"Some will not receive the testimony that God has given us to bear, flat-
tering themselves that we may be deceived and that they may be right. They
think that the people of God are not in need of plain dealing and of reproof,
but that God is with them. These tempted ones, whose souls have ever been
at war with the faithful reproving of sin, would cry: Speak unto us smooth
things. What disposition will these make of the message of the True Wit-
ness to the Laodiceans? There can be no deception here. This message must

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 21

be borne to a lukewarm church by God's servants. It must arouse His people
from their security and dangerous deception in regard to their real stand-
ing before God. This testimony, if received, will arouse to action and lead
to self-abasement and confession of sins."-Ibid., p. 259.

THE ONLY HOPE April 24

9 . Name one essential characteristic of those who would overcome the

Laodicean disease. Proverbs 15:31,32.

"The only hope for the Laodiceans is a clear view of their standing be-
fore God, a knowledge of the nature of their disease."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p.
87.
"The word of God is not silent in regard to this momentous time, and it
will be understood by all who do not resist His Spirit by determining not to
.hear, not to receive, not to obey."-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 719.

10. Explain the first steps in overcoming. Isaiah 57: 15; Hebrews 12:2.

"Ministers who are preaching present truth should not neglect the sol-
emn message to the Laodiceans. The testimony of the True Witness is not
a smooth message. The Lord does not say to them, You are about right; you
have borne chastisement and reproof that you never deserved; you have
been unnecessarily discouraged by severity; you are not guilty of the wrongs
and sins for which you have been reproved. The True Witness declares that
when you suppose you are really in a good condition of prosperity you are
in need of everything."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 257.

A LOVING WITNESS April 27

1. Despite the Laodicean tendencies so prevalent in this generation,

on what can every sincere believer base his hope while the door of
probation is open? Lamentations 3:22, 23.

"The case of those who are rebuked is not a hopeless one; it is not be-
yond the power of the great Mediator. He says: [Revelation 3:18 quoted].
Though the professed followers of Christ are in a deplorable condition, they
are not yet in so desperate a strait as were the foolish virgins whose lamps
were going out, and there was no time in which to replenish their vessels
with oil. When the bridegroom came, those that were ready went in with
him to the wedding; but when the foolish virgins came, the door was shut,
and they were too late to obtain an entrance.
"But the counsel of the true Witness does not represent those who are
lukewarm as in a hopeless case. There is yet a chance to remedy their state,
and the Laodicean message is full of encouragement." -The SDA Bible Com-

2. What quality of God shines through, even in the strong rebuke to

BECOMING BETTER ACQUAINTED April 28

3. Explain the distinction between what often motivates people to

come to God, compared with what ought to draw us to Him. 1 John
4:18,19.

"It is Satan's constant effort to misrepresent the character of God, the

nature of sin, and the real issues at stake in the great controversy. His soph-
istry lessens the obligation of the divine law and gives men license to sin.
At the same time he causes them to cherish false conceptions of God so
that they regard Him with fear and hate rather than with love."-The Great
Controversy, p. 569.
"The shortness of time is urged as an incentive for us to seek righteous-
ness and to make Christ our friend. This is not the great motive. It savors
of selfishness. Is it necessary that the terrors of the day of God be held be-
fore us to compel us through fear to right action? This ought not to be. Jesus
is attractive. He is full of love, mercy, and compassion. He proposes to be
our friend, to walk with us through all the rough pathways of life....
"It is our privilege to have a calm, close, happy walk with Jesus every
day we live."- That I May Know Him, p. 320.

4. What should we realize about the character of God as revealed by

Inspiration? Psalms 36:7; 85:10; 86:5; 145:8.

"It is astonishing how we treat our very best Friend, how little confi-
dence we repose in Him who is able to save to the uttermost, and who has
given us every evidence of His great love."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 351.
"Some seem to feel that they must be on probation and must prove to
the Lord that they are reformed, before they can claim His blessing. But
these dear souls may claim the blessing even now. They must have His grace,
the Spirit of Christ, to help their infirmities, or they cannot form a Chris-
tian character. Jesus loves to have us come to Him, just as we are-sinful,
helpless, dependent."-Ibid., p. 353.

5. What do we need to realize to begin banishing our own human

tendency toward self-righteousness? Isaiah 64:6; Titus 3:3-7.

"When men learn they cannot earn righteousness by their own merit
of works, and they look with firm and entire reliance upon Jesus Christ as
their only hope, there will not be so much of self and so little of Jesus. Souls
and bodies are defiled and polluted by sin, the heart is estranged from God,
yet many are struggling in their own finite strength to win salvation by good
works. Jesus, they think, will do some of the saving; they must do the rest.
24 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997
They need to see by faith the righteousness of Christ as their only hope for
time and for eternity."-Faith and Works, pp. 25, 26.
"Everyone needs now to seek the Lord. God's people will not endure
the test unless there is a revival and a reformation. The Lord will not admit
into the mansions He is preparing for the righteous, one soul who is self-
sufficient."-Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 285.

6. What does God demonstrate in Christ, and what is to be the practical

result for us? Ephesians 2:4-7.
"As God raised Christ from the dead, that He might bring life and im-
mortality to light through the gospel, and thus save His people from their

ening them with His life, filling their hearts with hope and joy."-The SDA

Laodicean era?
"It is the revelation of God's love that makes manifest the deformity and
sin of the heart centered in self."- The Desire ofAges, p. 498.
"In the rise of the third angel's message those who engaged in the work
of God had something to venture; they had sacrifices to make. They started
this work in poverty and suffered the greatest deprivations and reproach.
They met determined opposition, which drove them to God in their neces-
sity and kept their faith alive."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 256.

8. What simple advice is offered for daily living in the closing hours of
Earth's history? Philippians 4:7; Jude 21.
"If happiness is drawn from outside sources and not from the Divine
Fount, it will be as changeable as varying circumstances can make it; but
the peace of Christ is a constant and abiding peace. It does not depend on
any circumstance in life, on the amount of worldly goods, or the number of

Faith and Works, p. 17. [Author's italics.]
"The thought that the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us, not be-
cause of any merit on our part, but as a free gift from God, is a precious
thought. The enemy of God and man is not willing that this truth should be
clearly presented; for he knows that if the people receive it fully, his power
will be broken....
"That simple faith which takes God at His word should be encouraged.
God's people must have that faith which will lay hold of divine power."-
Gospel Workers, p. 161.

10. What should be the great concern and constant prayer of sincere
souls living in the Laodicean era? Psalm 85:6-8; Deuteronomy
10:12.

"God calls for a spiritual revival and a spiritual reformation. Unless this
takes place, those who are lukewarm will continue to grow more abhorrent
to the Lord, until He will refuse to acknowledge them as His children.
"A revival and a reformation must take place, under the ministration of
the Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival
signifies a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and
heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorga-
nization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation
will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected
with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do their appointed

Special Mission Offering
for a Chapel in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a republic in southeastern Europe. Rectangular in shape and
situated on the eastern side of the Balkan peninsula, its area covers 43,000
square miles (111,000 square kilometers). Because of the pleasant climate
and exquisitely varied natural scenery-forests, plains, mountains, and an
outlet to the Black Sea-Bulgaria attracts tourists from all over the world.
The population of the country is about 9 million and it is reported that 90%
adhere to the Eastern Orthodox faith. The remaining 10% are atheists, Mo-
hammedans, and others.
The message of reformation first came to Bulgaria in 1923. With the
formation of the SDA Reform Movement in 1925, our church was registered,
and the city of Sofia became the site of the Danubian Union headquarters.
During the brief period of freedom which followed, the work of the Reform
Movement was a great success in Bulgaria and many Spirit of Prophecy books
were published. However, as severe government restrictions over-shadowed
much of eastern Europe, the faithful believers were compelled to proceed
underground. Church buildings were confiscated by the state, and for many
years our brethren could worship only in private homes.
In 1989, changes occurred and since then, by God's grace, Bulgarian
citizens have again been enjoying religious freedom. The registration of our
church has been re-established, but so far, our chapels have not been re-
turned. Many new souls are accepting the message of reformation, and
though the work is advancing, the brethren must still gather in private homes
because of a lack of funds.
Despite the unselfish zeal of the believers, our financial possibilities are
very limited because our membership is comprised largely of elderly per-
sons and students on a small income. As funds are greatly needed, we ap-
peal to you, dear brothers, sisters, and friends from all over the world to
sympathize with this need-because when one part of the body suffers, the
whole feels the lack.
On Sabbath, May 3, 1997, when the Special Mission Offering is gath-
ered, let us seize this opportunity to promote the Lord's work, as we do not
know how long the present hour of liberty and peace will last. Your abun-
dant generosity in donating to the cause of truth in Bulgaria is greatly needed
and will be much appreciated. May the Lord richly bless both the gifts and
givers!

The Sacrifice of Christ
"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world"
(John 1:29).

"Look, 0 look upon the cross of Calvary; behold the royal victim suf-
fering on your account."-That I May Know Him, p. 65.
o Sunday
LOVE AND SACRIFICE May 4

1. What is written about the anguish experienced by the True Witness?

Matthew 26:38.

"How few have any conception of the anguish which rent the heart of
the Son of God during His thirty years of life upon earth. The path from the
manger to Calvary was shadowed by sorrow and grief. He was the Man of
Sorrows, and endured such heartache as no human language can portray."-
That I May Know Him, p. 66.

2. How is the suffering of Jesus most vividly illustrated? Isaiah 53:3-

5,7,8.

"[Christ's] suffering was the deepest anguish of the soul; and what man
could have sympathy with the soul anguish of the Son of the infinite God?
Hating sin with a perfect hatred, He yet gathered to His soul the sins of the
whole world, as He trod the path to Calvary, suffering the penalty of the
transgressor. Guiltless, He bore the punishment of the guilty; innocent, yet
offering Himself to bear the penalty of the transgression of the law of God.
The punishment of the sins of every soul was borne by the Son of the infi-
nite God. The guilt of every sin pressed its weight upon the divine soul of
the world's Redeemer."-That I May Know Him, p. 66.
"[Christ] did not die as a hero in the eyes of the world, loaded with hon-
ors, as men in battle. He died as a condemned criminal, suspended between
the heavens and the earth-died a lingering death of shame, exposed to
the tauntings and revilings of a debased, crime-loaded, profligate multi-
tude!"-Ibid., p. 68.
"The universe of heaven, the worlds unfallen, the fallen world, and the
confederacy of evil cannot say that God could do more for the salvation of
man than He has done. Never can His gift be surpassed, never can He dis-
playa richer depth of love. Calvary represents His crowning work."-Ibid.,
p.69.

A HEART-RENDING SCENE May 5

3. How should our hearts be softened and subdued by beholding

Christ on the cross? Luke 23:33, 34.

"Can you, in full view of the cross, beholding by the eye of faith the suf-
ferings of Christ, tell your tale of woe, your trials? Can you nurse revenge
of your enemies in your heart while the prayer of Christ comes from His
pale and quivering lips for His revilers, His murderers-'Father, forgive them;
for they know not what they do?' "-That I May Know Him, p. 65.

4. How can beholding the crucifixion be of practical benefit to the

proud, Laodicean believer? 1 Peter 1: 18-21.

"Pride and self-worship cannot flourish in the soul that keeps fresh in
mind the scenes of Calvary."-The Desire ofAges, p. 661.
"We should take our fitting place in humble penitence at the foot of the
cross. We may learn the lessons of meekness and lowliness of mind as we
go up to Mount Calvary, and, looking upon the cross, see our Saviour in
agony, the Son of God dying, the Just for the unjust. Behold Him who could
summon legions of angels to His assistance with one word, a subject of jest
and merriment, of reviling and hatred. He gives Himself a sacrifice for sin.
When reviled, He threatened not; when falsely accused, He opened not His
mouth. He prays on the cross for His murderers. He is dying for them. He
is paying an infinite price for everyone of them. He would not lose one whom
He has purchased at so great cost. He gives Himself to be smitten and
scourged without a murmur. And this uncomplaining victim is the Son of
God. His throne is from ever-lasting, and His kingdom shall have no end."-
That I May Know Him, p. 65.
"All this humiliation of the Majesty of heaven was for guilty, condemned
man. He went lower and lower in His humiliation, until there were no lower
depths that He could reach, in order to lift man up from his moral defile-
ment. All this was for you."-Ibid., p. 68.

THE HEAVY COST OF SIN May 6

5. How does a lack of appreciation for the sacrifice of Christ relate to

the Laodicean condition? Hebrews 10:26.

"Those who profess to keep the law of God and yet at heart are indulg-
ing in sin are condemned by the True Witness. They claim to be rich in a
knowledge of the truth; but they are not in harmony with its sacred prin-
ciples. The truth does not sanctify their lives. God's Word declares that the
professed commandment-keeper whose life contradicts his faith is blind,
wretched, poor, and naked."-Faith and Works, p. 31.
30 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997
6. Explain the relationship between sin, the law, and the cross. Ro-
mans 7:7; 1 John 3:4,5.

"Jesus died to save His people from their sins, and redemption in Christ
means to cease the transgression of the law of God and to be free from ev-
ery sin; no heart that is stirred with enmity against the law of God is in har-
mony with Christ, who suffered on Calvary to vindicate and exalt the law
before the universe."-Faith and Works, p. 95.
"Our love to Christ will be in proportion to the depth of our conviction
of sin, and by the law is the knowledge of sin. But as we see ourselves, let
us look away to Jesus, who gave Himself for us that He might redeem us
from all iniquity. By faith take hold of the merits of Christ, and the soul-
cleansing blood will be applied. The more clearly we see the evils and per-
ils to which we have been exposed, the more grateful shall we be for deliv-
erance through Christ. The gospel of Christ does not give men license to
break the law, for it was through transgression that the floodgates of woe
were opened upon our world.
"Today sin is the same malignant thing that it was in the time of Adam.
The gospel does not promise the favor of God to anyone who in impenitence
breaks His law. The depravity of the human heart, the guilt of transgres-
sion, the ruin of sin, are all made plain by the cross where Christ has made
for us a way of escape."-Ibid., p. 96.

o Wednesday
DRAWING POWER May 7

7. What does Inspiration teach about the amazing attraction of the

crucifixion of Christ? John 3:14,15; 12:32.

'The cross of Calvary appeals in power, affording a reason why we should

love Christ now, and why we should consider Him first, and best, and last,
in everything."-That I May Know Him, p. 65.
"Ifyou are conscious of your sins, do not devote all your powers to mourn-
ing over them, but look and live. Jesus is our only Saviour."-Selected Mes-
sages, book 1, p. 352.

8. What is the first step in appropriating the righteousness of Christ to

ourselves? John 6:37; 2 Corinthians 5:21.

"Let no one here feel that his case is hopeless; for it is not. You may see
that you are sinful and undone; but it is just on this account that you need a
Saviour. If you have sins to confess, lose no time. These moments are golden.
[1 John 1:9 quoted.] Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will
be filled; for Jesus has promised it."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 352, 353.

o Thursday
MOTIVATING POWER May 8

9. What can we learn from the heavenly angels' appreciation of the

sacrifice of Christ? Revelation 5: 11, 12.

10. How is Christ's crucifixion to motivate us in a practical way? Ro-

mans 5:8-11; Galatians 5:6.

"It is that faith which works that you want. How does it work? It works
by love. What love? Why, the love flashing from the cross of Calvary. It is
set up midway between earth and heaven, and salvation is gained by look-
ing at this cross. The Father has accepted it, and the angelic host have come
to that cross, and God Himself has bowed in acceptance of the sacrifice. It
answers the demand of Heaven, and man can be saved through Jesus Christ,
if we only have faith in Him. Man is reconciled to God, and God to man,
through the full and perfect and entire sacrifice....
"Christ has died for me. He has purchased me at an infinite cost, and
He has atoned for everything that is offensive to Him. I must be a laborer
with Him. I must take His yoke upon myself. I must wear the yoke of Christ.
I must lift His burdens. I must teach others how to be lifted from the sinful
state that I was in and to grasp by living faith the righteousness that is in
Christ Jesus. That is the only way that the sinner can be saved."-Faith and
Works, p. 72.

Investing in Heavenly Gold
"I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest
be rich" (Revelation 3:18).

"The great Redeemer represents Himself as a heavenly merchantman,

laden with riches, calling from house to house, presenting His priceless
goods."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 965.

o Sunday
VALUABLE MERCHANDISE May 11

1. What is the first work that the True Witness counsels the Laodicean
to do, and why? Revelation 3: 18 (first part).

"Faith and love are the true riches, the pure gold which the True Wit-
ness counsels the lukewarm to buy. However rich we may be in earthly trea-
sure, all our wealth will not enable us to buy the precious remedies that
cure the disease of the soul called lukewarmness. Intellect and earthly riches
were powerless to remove the defects of the Laodicean church, or to rem-
edy their deplorable condition."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.

2. Although the Merchantman has abundantly proven his trustworthi-

ness on Calvary's cross, how are some inclined to doubt and refuse
His offer? Matthew 14:31 (last part).

''The wares of heaven are offered to our churches. Every individual needs
to have a decided interest in the invitation of Christ. Brethren and sisters,
are your thoughts after this order? 'These sharp, decided words do not mean
me; I am in a fairly good condition spiritually, though I may not have all the
fervor and zeal that some have. I believe the truth. Those to whom this mes-
sage belongs may take it. I think some need it.' You who think and reason
thus, be assured that you are the very ones to whom this message belongs.
While the costly wares of heaven are open before you, draw nigh and buy
that which you have lost-the gold of love and faith."-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, pp. 964, 965.
o Monday
EVIDENCE OF POVERTY May 12

3. Describe one type of evidence that a person may be in dire need of

the heavenly gold. Mark 4: 17.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 33

"I was pointed to the providence of God among His people and was shown
that every trial made by the refining, purifying process upon professed Chris-
tians proves some to be dross. The fine gold does not always appear. In ev-
ery religious crisis some fall under temptation. The shaking of God blows
away multitudes like dry leaves. Prosperity multiplies a mass of professors.
Adversity purges them out of the church. As a class, their spirits are not
steadfast with God. They go out from us because they are not of us; for when
tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, many are offended."-
Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 89.

4. Name another symptom which shows a serious lack of this gold.

Matthew 15:8; Hebrews 3: 12. How can this problem be remedied?

"Faith and love are golden treasures, elements that are greatly want-
ing among God's people. I have been shown that unbelief in the testimo-
nies of warning, encouragement, and reproof is shutting away the light from
God's people. Unbelief is closing their eyes so that they are ignorant of their
true condition....
"Faith in the soon coming of Christ is waning. 'My Lord delayeth His
coming' is not only said in the heart, but expressed in words and most de-
cidedly in works. Stupidity in this watching time is sealing the senses of
God's people as to the signs of the times. The terrible iniquity which abounds
calls for the greatest diligence and for the living testimony, to keep sin out
of the church. Faith has been decreasing to a fearful degree, and it is only
by exercise that it can increase."-Testimonies, vol. 3, pp. 255, 256.
o Tuesday
"BUYING" May 13
5. How can we "buy" the goods of Heaven if they are supposed to be
free? Isaiah 55:1,2.

"Some may say it is exalting our own merits to expect favor from God
through our good works. True, we cannot buy one victory with our good
works; yet we cannot be victors without them. The purchase which Christ
recommends to us is only complying with the conditions He has given us.
True grace, which is of inestimable value, and which will endure the test of
trial and adversity, is only obtained through faith and humble, prayerful obe-
dience. Graces that endure the proofs of affliction and persecution, and evi-
dence their soundness and sincerity, are the gold which is tried in the fire
and found genuine. Christ offers to sell this precious treasure to man: 'Buy
of Me gold tried in the fire.' The dead, heartless performance of duty does
not make us Christians. We must get out of a lukewarm condition and ex-
perience a true conversion, or we shall fail of heaven."-Testimonies, vol. 4,
p.89.

6. Relate Christ's parable of the pearl of great price to the purchase of

heavenly gold. Matthew 13:45, 46.

34 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

"In the parable the pearl is not represented as a gift. The merchantman
bought it at the price of all that he had. Many question the meaning of this,
since Christ is represented in the Scriptures as a gift. He is a gift, but only
to those who give themselves, soul, body, and spirit, to Him without reserve.
We are to give ourselves to Christ, to live a life of willing obedience to all
His requirements. All that we are, all the talents and capabilities we pos-
sess, are the Lord's, to be consecrated to His service. When we thus give
ourselves wholly to Him, Christ, with all the treasures of heaven, gives Him-
self to us."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 116.
"There are some who are seeking, always seeking, for the goodly pearl.
But they do not make an entire surrender of their wrong habits. They do
not die to self that Christ may live in them. Therefore they do not find the
precious pearl. They have not overcome unholy ambition and their love for
worldly attractions. They do not lift the cross, and follow Christ in the path
of self-denial and self-sacrifice."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 399, 400.
"The gold tried in the fire is faith that works by love. Only this can bring
us into harmony with God. We may be active, we may do much work; but
without love, such love as dwelt in the heart of Christ, we can never be num-
bered with the family of heaven."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 158.

o Wednesday
REFINING THE GOLD May 14

7. Describe the work which Christ desires to perform in the heart of

everyone of His children during this period of Laodicea. Malachi
3:3,4.

"Everything in our character that cannot enter the city of God will be
reproved; if we submit to the Lord's refining, all the dross and the tin will
be consumed. As the Lord's chosen ones will receive the light appropriate
for this time, they will not be led to exalt themselves....
"[Malachi 3:3, 4 quoted.] Here is the process, the refining, purifying
process, to be carried on by the Lord of hosts. The work is most trying to
the soul, but it is only through this process that the rubbish and defiling
impurities can be removed. Our trials are all necessary to bring us close to
our heavenly Father, in obedience to His will, that we may offer to the Lord
an offering in righteousness."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Com-
ments], vol. 4, pp. 1181, 1182.

8. Give a practical explanation of how this refining process works.

Romans 5: 1-5.

"A harsh-spirited man is unrefined, coarse; he is not spiritual; he has

not a heart of flesh, but a heart as unimpressible as a stone. His only help
is to fall on the Rock, and be broken. The Lord will place all such in the
crucible, and try them in fire, as gold is tried. When He can see His own

image reflected in them He will remove them.... The religion of Christ is
to take possession of the whole being, and give force and power to all our
faculties, renovating, cleansing, and refining. It manifests itself without pa-
rade, and high-sounding words, but is shown in an upright and unselfish
life."-Sons and Daughters of God, p. 100.

GOOD BUSINESS SENSE May 15

9. How does the heavenly Merchantman's gold increase in value? 1

Peter 1:7-9.

"The gold here recommended [by the True Witness] as having been
tried in the fire is faith and love. It makes the heart rich; for it has been
purged until it is pure, and the more it is tested the more brilliant is its lus-
ter."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.

1 O.Explain why the purchase of Christ's gold clearly constitutes a wise

investment. Matthew 6: 19-21.

"Unselfish labor for Christ and the future life will be as gold, silver, and
precious stones; it is imperishable."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 466.
"The counsel of the true Witn~ss is full of encouragement and comfort.
The churches may yet obtain the gold of truth, faith, and love, and be rich
in heavenly treasure."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol.

ness, Christ will put upon every repenting, believing soul."-Christ's Object

WHICH GARMENT TO WEAR? May 18

1. Explain how the spiritual nakedness of Laodicea has had its roots
throughout human history. Genesis 3:6-10.

"The white robe of innocence was worn by our first parents when they
were placed by God in holy Eden. They lived in perfect conformity to the
will of God. All the strength of their affections was given to their heavenly
Father. A beautiful soft light, the light of God, enshrouded the holy pair.
This robe of light was a symbol of their spiritual garments of heavenly in-
nocence. Had they remained true to God it would ever have continued to
enshroud them. But when sin entered, they severed their connection with
God, and the light that had encircled them departed. Naked and ashamed,
they tried to supply the place of the heavenly garments by sewing together
fig leaves for a covering.
"This is what the transgressors of God's law have done ever since the
day of Adam and Eve's disobedience. They have sewed together fig leaves
to cover the nakedness caused by transgression. They have worn the gar-
ments of their own devising, by works of their own they have tried to cover
their sins, and make themselves acceptable with God."-Christ's Object Les-
sons, pp. 310, 311.
"Self-righteousness is the danger of this age; it separates the soul from
Christ. Those who trust to their own righteousness cannot understand how
salvation comes through Christ. They call sin righteousness and righteous-
ness sin. They have no appreciation of the evil of transgression, no under-
standing of the terror of the law; for they do not respect God's moral stan-
dard. The reason there are so many spurious conversions in these days is
that there is so Iowan appreciation of the law of God."-Faith and Works,
p.96.

CHRIST'S RIGHTEOUSNESS May 19

3. How did Christ demonstrate God's righteousness? Isaiah 42:21.

Describe the attitude which permeated His life. Psalm 40:8.

4. Explain the contrast between the fabric of heavenly origin and the
Laodicean patchwork. Zechariah 3:4; Matthew 9: 16.

"The religion of God is a firm fabric, composed of innumerable threads,

and woven together with tact and skill. Only the wisdom which comes from
God can make this fabric complete. There are a great many kinds of cloth
which at first have a fine appearance, but they cannot endure the test. They
wash out. The colors are not fast. Under the heat of summer they fade away
and are lost. The cloth cannot endure rough handling.
"So it is with the religion of many. When the warp and woof of charac-
ter will not stand the test of trial, the material of which it is composed is
worthless. The efforts made to patch the old with a new piece do not better
the condition of things; for the old, flimsy material breaks away from the
new, leaving the rent much larger than before. Patching will not do. The
only way is to discard the old garment altogether, and procure one entirely
new.
"Christ's plan is the only safe one. He declares, 'Behold, I make all things
new.' 'If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.' Christ gives man no
encouragement to think that He will accept a patchwork character, made
up mostly of self, with a little of Christ. This is the condition of the Laodicean
church."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1101.

IMPUTED AND IMPARTED May 20

5. How is Christ's righteousness imputed to us? Romans 3:23-26;

5:17-19.

"We have no righteousness of our own with which to meet the claims
of the law of God. But Christ has made a way of escape for us. He lived on
earth amid trials and temptations such as we have to meet. He lived a sinless
life. He died for us, and now He offers to take our sins and give us His righ-
teousness. If you give yourself to Him, and accept Him as your Saviour, then,
sinful as your life may have been, for His sake you are accounted righteous.
Christ's character stands in place of your character, and you are accepted
before God just as if you had not sinned."-Steps to Christ, p. 62.

38 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

6. What else is Christ willing to do in and through us? How is the
righteousness of Christ to be imparted to us? Galatians 2:20; John
16: 13 (first part).

"Christ changes the heart. He abides in your heart by faith. You are to
maintain this connection with Christ by faith and the continual surrender
of your will to Him; and so long as you do this, He will work in you to will
and to do according to His good pleasure. So you may say, 'The life which I
now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and
gave Himself for me' (Galatians 2:20). So Jesus said to His disciples, 'It is
not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you" (Mat-
thew 10:20). Then with Christ working in you, you will manifest the same
spirit and do the same good works-works of righteousness, obedience."-
Steps to Christ, pp. 62, 63.
"When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart,
the will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the
thoughts are brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it
means to be clothed with the garment of His righteousness. Then as the
Lord looks upon us He sees, not the fig-leaf garment, not the nakedness
and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righteousness, which is perfect
obedience to the law of Jehovah."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 312.
"The white raiment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ
imparted to the sinner. This is indeed a garment of heavenly texture, that
can be bought only of Christ for a life of willing obedience."-Testimonies,
vol. 4, p. 88.

THE WEDDING GARMENT May 21

7. How does Christ illustrate the vital importance of putting on the

garment He provides? Matthew 22: 1-4, 11-14. Explain what this
means for us.

"The man who came to the feast without a wedding garment represents
the condition of many in our world today. They profess to be Christians,
and lay claim to the blessings and privileges of the gospel; yet they feel no
need of a transformation of character. They have never felt true repentance
for sin. They do not realize their need of Christ or exercise faith in Him.
They have not overcome their hereditary or cultivated tendencies to wrong-
doing. Yet they think that they are good enough in themselves, and they
rest upon their own merits instead of trusting in Christ. Hearers of the word,
they come to the banquet, but they have not put on the robe of Christ's righ-
teousness."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 315.

8. Describe the experience of Christians who are putting on the wed-

ding garment provided by the Lord. Romans 8: 1-4; 1 Peter 1 :22.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 39

"God has a people upon the earth who in faith and holy hope are trac-
ing down the roll of fast-fulfilling prophecy and are seeking to purify their
souls by obeying the truth, that they may not be found without the wed-
ding garment when Christ shall appear."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 307.
"When those who are seeking for salvation refuse to fail or be discour-
aged, they will find peace and rest in the Lord. Christ will clothe them with
His righteousness."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 400.
o Thursday
CHRIST OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS May 22
9. Why must Christ's righteousness be imputed and imparted to each
candidate for a place in His kingdom? Jeremiah 23:6; 1 Peter 4: 18.

"Our only ground of hope is in the righteousness of Christ imputed to

us, and in that wrought by His Spirit working in and through us."-Steps to
Christ, p. 63.
"There will be no future probation in which to prepare for eternity. It is

CLEARING BECLOUD.ED VISION May 25
1. What is the third recommendation of the True Witness in His coun-
sel to Laodicea? Revelation 3:18 (last part).

"The oil for anointing is the oil of His grace, which will give spiritual
eyesight to the soul in blindness and darkness, that he may distinguish be-
tween the workings of the Spirit of God and the spirit of the enemy."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 966.

2. Explain the process of how the heavenly eyesalve is applied. Mat-

thew6:22.

"The eye is the sensitive conscience, the inner light, of the mind. Upon
its correct view of things the spiritual healthfulness of the whole soul and
being depends. The 'eyesalve,' the Word of God, makes the conscience smart
under its application; for it convicts of sin. But the smarting is necessary
that the healing may follow, and the eye be single to the glory of God. The
sinner, beholding himself in God's great moral looking glass, sees himself
as God views him, and exercises repentance toward God and faith toward
our Lord Jesus Christ. .
"The Laodiceans were not entirely blind, else the eyesalve would
have done nothing to restore their sight, and enable them to discern the
true attributes of Christ. Says Christ, By renouncing your own self-
sufficiency, giving up all things, however dear to you, you may buy the gold,
the raiment, and the eyesalve that you may see."-The SDA Bible Commen-

entrusted with great light. 1 John 2:9-11.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 41

''The sinner cannot be convinced of his guilt unless he understands what
constitutes sin. It is impossible for an individual to experience Bible sancti-
fication while he holds that if he believes in Christ it is immaterial whether
he obeys God's law or disobeys it."-Faith and Works, p. 31.
"Do not think that you will be found as vessels unto honor in the time
of the latter rain, to receive the glory of God, if you are lifting up your souls
unto vanity, speaking perverse things, in secret cherishing roots of bitter-
ness."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 469.

"God commended Solomon's prayer. And He will today hear and com-
mend the prayers of those who in faith and humility cry to Him for aid. He
will certainly answer the fervent prayer for a preparation for service."- The

5. How did Jesus demonstrate that enlightenment of vision may in-

volve a progressive work? Mark 8:22-24. Explain the spiritual
parallel of this experience to the precarious Laodicean state.

"Many in the church are represented to me as seeing men like trees

walking. They must have another and deeper experience before they dis-
cern the snares spread to take them in the net of the deceiver. There must
be no halfway work done now."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 395.
"Men who have not a daily experience in the things of God will not move
wisely in dealing with sacred responsibilities; they will mistake light for er-
ror, and specious error they will pronounce light, mistaking phantoms for
realities, and realities for phantoms, calling a world an atom, and an atom a
world. They will fall into deceptions and delusions that Satan has prepared
as concealed nets to entangle the feet of those who think they can walk in
their human wisdom without the special grace of Christ. Jesus wants man
to see not men as trees walking but all things clearly. There is only one rem-
edy for the sinful soul, and unless it is received, men will accept one delu-
sion after another until their senses are perverted."-Evangelism, pp. 593,
594.

6. As in the case of the blind man's healing, how is the special anoint-
ing of Christ's eyesalve essential in bringing about doctrinal under-
standing, reformation, and unity among all faithful believers? Mark
8:25.

42 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

"The true religion, the only religion of the Bible, that teaches forgive-
ness only through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour, that advocates
righteousness by the faith of the Son of God, has been slighted, spoken
against, ridiculed, and rejected. It has been denounced as leading to enthu-
siasm and fanaticism. But it is the life of Jesus Christ in the soul, it is the
active principle of love imparted by the Holy Spirit, that alone will make
the soul fruitful unto good works. The love of Christ is the force and power
of every message for God that ever fell from human lips. What kind of a
future is before us if we shall fail to come into the unity of the faith?
"When we are united in the unity for which Christ prayed, this long con-
troversy that has been kept up through satanic agency will end, and we shall
not see men framing plans after the order of the world because they have
not spiritual eyesight to discern spiritual things. They now see men as trees
walking, and they need the divine touch, that they may see as God sees,
and work as Christ worked. Then will Zion's watchmen unitedly sound the
trumpet in clearer, louder notes."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 468.

DISCERNMENT ESSENTIAL May 28

7. What is one of the most solemn responsibilities of God's workers,

especially amidst all the confusion of the last days? Ezekiel 44:23.

"The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern

between the evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise. God has
given His church eyes which He requires them to anoint with wisdom, that
they may see clearly; but many would put out the eyes of the church if they
could; for they would not have their deeds come to the light, lest they should
be reproved."-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 88, 89.
"We need to be exceedingly careful, and walk humbly before God, that
we may have spiritual eyesalve that we may distinguish the working of the
Holy Spirit of God from the working of that spirit that would bring in wild
license and fanaticism. 'By their fruits ye shall know them' (Matthew 7:20).
Those who are really beholding Christ will be changed into His image, even
by the Spirit of the Lord, and will grow up to the full stature of men and
women in Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit of God will inspire men with love
and purity; and refinement will be manifest in their characters."-Selected

"God has given to every man his work, and no one else can do that work
for him. Oh, that you individually would apply the eyesalve, that you might
see your defects of character and realize how God regards your love of the
world, which is crowding out the love of God."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 615.

10. In order that we may receive this important blessing, what should
constitute our daily prayer and practice? Psalm 119:18; Hebrews
5:14.

"If we are constantly looking unto Jesus and receiving His Spirit, we
shall have clear eyesight. Then we shall discern the perils on every side,
and shall guard every word we utter, lest Satan find opportunity to weave
in his deceptions."-The Paulson Collection, p. 144.
"God's law is the mirror presenting a complete reflection of the man as
he is, and holding up before him the correct likeness. Some will turn away
and forget this picture, while others will employ abusive epithets against
the law, as though this would cure their defects of character. Still others
who are condemned by the law will repent of their transgressions and,
through faith in Christ's merits, will perfect Christian character."-Faith and

PATERNAL LOVE June 1

received from the Lord? Hebrews 12:7-11.

"Though bitter the discipline, it is appointed by a Father's tender love,

'that we might be partakers of His holiness.' "- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 683.
[Author's italics.]
"God requires that we confess our sins, and humble our hearts before
Him; but at the same time we should have confidence in Him as a tender
Father, who will not forsake those who put their trust in Him. Many of us
walk by sight, and not by faith. We believe the things that are seen, but do
not appreciate the precious promises given us in God's Word; and yet we
cannot dishonor God more decidedly than by showing that we distrust what
He says, and question whether the Lord is in earnest with us or is deceiv-
ing us.
"God does not give us up because of our sins. We may make mistakes,
and grieve His Spirit; but when we repent, and come to Him with contrite
hearts, He will not turn us away."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 350.

REPENTANCE NEEDED June 2

3. In what sense have Laodiceans followed the example of the Corinthian

believers? 1 Corinthians 3:3. What is needed to overcome this
problem?

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 45

"Have we not joined in the work of the enemy of souls and misrepre-
sented our heavenly Father? Have we not been passing judgment on our
brethren, criticizing their words and actions? Then the love of God has not
been enthroned in our souls. Let us make a decided change."-Faith and
Works, p. 61.
"There are hindrances to be removed. Wrong feelings have been cher-
ished, and there have been pride, self-sufficiency, impatience, and
murmurings. All these separate us from God. Sins must be confessed; there
must be a deeper work of grace in the heart. Those who feel weak and dis-
couraged may become strong men of God, and do noble work for the Mas-
ter. But they must work from a high standpoint; they must be influenced by
no selfish motives."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 350, 351.

4. Explain how true repentance is needed to cut across the proud, self-
righteous Laodicean nature. Luke 18:9-14.

"Repentance for sin is the first fruits of the working of the Holy Spirit
in the life. It is the only process by which infinite purity reflects the image
of Christ in His redeemed subjects."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White
Comments], vol. 6, p. 1068.
"We can do nothing, absolutely nothing, to commend ourselves to di-
vine favor. We must not trust at all to ourselves nor to our good works; but
when as erring, sinful beings we come to Christ, we may find rest in His
love. God will accept everyone that comes to Him trusting wholly in the
merits of a crucified Saviour."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 353, 354.

AN EXAMPLE OF REPENTANCE June 3

5. What should we learn from the similarity between the natural atti-
tude of the Laodicean and that of the early experience of the disciple
Peter? Matthew 26:33, 69-74.

6. How should the suffering of Christ in Gethsemane inspire us to

deeper repentance than we have ever before experienced? Matthew
26:75; Hebrews 12:3,4.

"Peter denied the Man of Sorrows in His acquaintance with grief in the
hour of His humiliation. But he afterward repented and was reconverted.
He had true contrition of soul and gave himself afresh to his Saviour. With
blinding tears he makes his way to the solitudes of the Garden of Gethsemane
and there prostrates himself where he saw his Saviour's prostrate form when
the bloody sweat was forced from His pores by His great agony. Peter re-
members with remorse that he was asleep when Jesus prayed during those
fearful hours. His proud heart breaks, and penitential tears moisten the sods
so recently stained with the bloody sweat drops of God's dear Son. He left

that garden a converted man. He was ready then to pity the tempted. He
was humbled and could sympathize with the weak and erring. He could cau-
tion and warn the presumptuous, and was fully fitted to strengthen his breth-
ren."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 416.

A CHANGE IN PRIORITIES June 4

7 . Name one scriptural admonition which is to have special emphasis

in the Laodicean era. 1 John 2:15-17.

"The Lord has shown me in vision some things concerning the church
in its present lukewarm state, which I will relate to you. The church was
presented before me in vision. Said the angel to the church: 'Jesus speaks
to thee, "Be zealous and repent.'" This work, I saw, should be taken hold of
in earnest. There is something to repent of. Worldly-mindedness, selfish-
ness, and covetousness have been eating out the spirituality and life of God's
people.
"The danger of God's people for a few years past has been the love of
the world. Out of this have sprung the sins of selfishness and covetous-
ness."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 141.

8. How is the word of God to serve as a tool to cut away the carnal
nature of Laodicean believers? Hebrews 4:12-16.

"You need to study the word of God with a purpose, not to confirm your
own ideas, but to bring them to be trimmed, to be condemned or approved
as they are or are not in harmony with the word of God. The Bible should
be your constant companion. You should study the testimonies, not to pick
out certain sentences to use as you see fit, to strengthen your assertions,
while you disregard the plainest statements given to correct your course
of action."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 467.
"God now calls upon you to repent, to be zealous in the work. Your eternal
happiness will be determined by the course you now pursue. Can you re-
ject the invitations of mercy now offered? Can you choose your own way?
Will you cherish pride and vanity, and lose your soul at last? The word of
God plainly tells us that few will be saved, and that the greater number of
those, even, who are called will prove themselves unworthy of everlasting
life ....
"Conversion is a work that most do not appreciate. It is not a small mat-
ter to transform an earthly, sin-loving mind and bring it to understand the
unspeakable love of Christ, the charms of His grace, and the excellency of
God, so that the soul shall be imbued with divine love and captivated with
the heavenly mysteries. When he understands these things, his former life
appears disgusting and hateful. He hates sin, and, breaking his heart be-
fore God, he embraces Christ as the life and joy of the soul. He renounces
his former pleasures. He has a new mind, new affections, new interest, new

will; his sorrows, and desires, and love are all new. The lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, which have heretofore been pre-
ferred before Christ, are now turned from, and Christ is the charm of his
life, the crown of his rejoicing."-Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 293, 294.

HEEDING THE COUNSEL June 5

9. What counsel is given to those who tenaciously cling to the world and
its goods? 1 Timothy 6:6-11.

"You cannot keep the fellowship of the world, participate in its pleasures,
identify yourself with its interests, and still be the sons of God."- That I May
Know Him, p. 310.
"I saw that the brethren who have possessions have a work to do to tear
away from these earthly treasures and to overcome their love of the world.
Many of them love this world, love their treasure, but are not willing to see
it. They must be zealous and repent of their selfish covetousness, that the
love of the truth may swallow up everything else."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 142.

10. What hope is held out for Laodiceans on condition of zealous repen-
tance and conversion? Acts 3:19,20.

"Heed the counsel of the True Witness. Buy gold tried in the fire, that
thou mayest be rich, white raiment that thou mayest be clothed, and eyesalve
that thou mayest see. Make some effort. These precious treasures will not
drop upon us without some exertion on our part. We must buy-'be zeal-
ous and repent' of our lukewarm state. We must be awake to see our wrongs,
to search for our sins, and to zealously repent of them."- Testimonies, vol. 1,
p.142.
"The pointed testimony must live in the church. This alone will answer
to the message to the Laodiceans. Wrongs must be reproved, sin must be
called sin, and iniquity must be met promptly and decidedly,. and put away
from us as a people."-Ibid., vol. 3, p. 260.

Special Mission Offering
for the Missionary School in Peru

Peru is a South American republic bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Ec-

uador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. The total area is 496,224 square
miles (1,285,216 square kilometers), with a population of nearly 24,000,000.
Roman Catholicism predominates as the officially established religion and
over 90% of the people profess its tenets. While adherents to other faiths
are tolerated and permitted freedom of worship, they constitute less than
10% of the population.
When the first SDA Reform Movement missionary arrived in Peru in
1930, he was encouraged to find a number of interested souls who had al-
ready been reading our literature since the late 1920's. The work was reg-
istered as a mission in 1934, and gradually the present truth took root in
the hearts of many souls. Today there are seven fields comprising the Pe-
ruvian Union. Considerable progress has been made especially since the
inception of the full-time missionary school as an educational center to pre-
pare students for effective service both in Peru and in neighboring coun-
tries.
To maximize the preparation of missionaries, ministers, teachers, and
institutional administrators, it has become necessary to make further ad-
vancements in our educational program. The aim is to follow more closely
the Lord's counsel that "land should be secured at a distance from the cit-
ies, where schools can be built up in which the youth can be given an edu-
cation in agricultural and mechanical lines" (Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 215).
By God's grace, a seven-hectare parcel (over 17 acres) of rural land has
been acquired near Santo Domingo, about three and a half hours (by car)
from the capital city of Lima. The soil is very productive and the land is
blessed with something very precious in this area-an abundance of good,
clean water. Although a chapel for worship is already on the property, con-
struction on a building with seven classrooms has begun, but due to lack of
funds, progress on it has been halted.
Dear brethren and friends, when the Special Mission Offering is gath-
ered on Sabbath, June 7, 1997, please remember the needs of this educa-
tional institution. "Study in agricultural lines should be the A, B, and C of
the education given in our schools" (Ibid., vol. 6, p. 179). Through your gen-
erous sacrifices, this key aspect of missionary training can become a real-
ity. May the Lord abundantly bless each gift and giver!

JESUS IS CALLING June 8

1. What message ofJesus, given to a proud, self-sufficient Pharisee, is

especially applicable to the Laodicean condition? John 3: 7.

"You may manifest great zeal in missionary effort, and yet because it is
corrupted with selfishness, and tastes strongly of self, it is nought in the
sight of God; for it is a tainted, corrupted offering. Unless the door of the
heart is open to Jesus, unless He occupies the soul temple, unless the heart
is imbued with His divine attributes, human actions when weighed in the
heavenly balances, will be pronounced 'Wanting.' The love of Christ would
make you rich; but many do not realize the value of His love. Many do not
realize that the spirit which they cherish is destitute of the meekness and
lowliness of Christ, destitute of the love that would constitute them chan-
nels of light."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p.
961.

2. What constitutes a knock on the heart's door? Revelation 3:20 (first

part).

"Every warning, reproof, and entreaty in the Word of God, or through

His delegated messengers, is a knock at the door of the heart; it is the voice

YOUR GUEST IS WAITING June 9

3. Describe the danger in delaying Christ's entrance, and how easily

this can happen. 2 Corinthians 6:1,2.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 51

"With every knock unheeded, your determination to open becomes
weaker and weaker. If the voice of Jesus is not heeded at once, it becomes
confused in the mind with a multitude of other voices, the world's care and
business engross the attention, and conviction dies away. The heart becomes
less impressible, and lapses into a perilous unconsciousness of the short-
ness of time, and of the great eternity beyond.
"The heavenly Guest is standing at your door, while you are piling up
obstructions to bar His entrance. Jesus is knocking through the prosperity
He gives you. He loads you with blessings to test your fidelity, that they
may flow out from you to others. Will you permit your selfishness to tri-
umph? Will you squander God's talents, and lose your soul through idola-
trous love of the blessings He has given?"-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 967.

4. What may be preventing the Saviour's entrance? Hebrews 3: 12-15.

"I saw that many have so much rubbish piled up at the door of their
heart that they cannot get the door open. Some have difficulties between
themselves and their brethren to remove. Others have evil tempers, self-
ish covetousness, to remove before they can open the door. Others have
rolled the world before the door of their heart, which bars the door. All this
rubbish must be taken away, and then they can open the door and welcome
the Saviour in."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 143.

WHAT IS BLOCKING THE DOOR? June 10

5. Name a common character defect which blocks the door of many

Laodicean hearts today. Matthew 5:23, 24; 7: 1-5.

"I saw that some are withering spiritually. They have lived some time
watching to keep their brethren straight-watching for every fault to make
trouble with them. And while doing this, their minds are not on God, nor
on heaven, nor on the truth; but just where Satan wants them-on some-
one else. Their souls are neglected; they seldom see or feel their own faults,
for they have had enough to do to watch the faults of others without so much
as looking to their own souls or searching their own hearts. A person's dress,
bonnet, or apron takes their attention. They must talk to this one or that
one, and it is sufficient to dwell upon for weeks. I saw that all the religion a
few poor souls have consists in watching the garments and acts of others,
and finding fault with them. Unless they reform, there will be no place in
heaven for them, for they would find fault with the Lord Himself."-Testi-
monies, vol. 1, p. 145.

6. Name a common theological error which blocks the door of many

Laodicean hearts today. Romans 8: 7 .

52 Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997

"I was urged by the Spirit of the Lord to present His law as the great
standard of righteousness and to warn our people against the modern, coun-
terfeit sanctification which has its origin in will-worship rather than in sub-
mission to the will of God. This error is fast flooding the world, and as God's
witnesses we shall ~be called to bear a decided testimony against it. It is one
of the veriest delusions of the last days and will prove a temptation to all
who believe present truth."-Faith and Works, p. 51.
"Spurious sanctification leads directly away from the Bible. Religion is
reduced to a fable. Feelings and impressions are made the criterion. While
they profess to be sinless and boast of their righteousness, the claimants of
sanctification teach that men are at liberty to transgress the law of God and
that those who obey its precepts have fallen from grace ....
"The true follower of Christ will make no boastful claims to holiness. It
is by the law of God that the sinner is convicted. He sees His own sinful-
ness in contrast with the perfect righteousness which it enjoins, and this
leads him to humility and repentance. He becomes reconciled to God through
the blood of Christ, and as he continues to walk with Him he will be gain-
ing a clearer sense of the holiness of God's character and the far-reaching
nature of His requirements. He will see more clearly his own defects and
will feel the need of continual repentance and faith in the blood of Christ."-

REMOVING THE BARRIER June 11
7. What happens when we consent to open our heart's door? Revela-
tion 3:20 (last part).
"How willing is Christ to take possession of the soul temple if we will
let Him! He is represented as waiting and knocking at the door of the heart.
Then why does He not enter? It is because the love of sin has closed the

Matthew 5:4; 18:11.
"At different times letters have come to me from persons who were in
despair over their sins. One and another have written: 'I fear I am past all
help. Is there any hope for me?' To these poor souls the message has been
given: 'Hope in God. The Father has bread enough and to spare. Arise, and

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April-June 1997 53

"Oh, how precious was this promise, as it was shown to me in vision! 'I
will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.' Oh, the love,
the wondrous love of God! Mer all our lukewarmness and sins He says:
'Return unto Me, and I will return unto thee, and will heal all thy backslidings.'
This was repeated by the angel a number of times. 'Return unto Me, and I
will return unto thee, and will heal all thy backslidings.'
"Some, I saw, would gladly return. Others will not let this message to
the Laodicean church have its weight upon them. They will glide along, much
after the same manner as before, and will be spewed out of the mouth of
the Lord. Those only who zealously repent will have favor with God."-Tes-
timonies, vol. 1, pp. 143, 144.

10. How can we open our hearts to the message of the True Witness?
Revelation 3:22; Luke 11:28.

"Those who are reproved by the Spirit of God should not rise up against
the humble instrument. It is God, and not an erring mortal, who has spo-
ken to save them from ruin. Those who despise the warning will be left in
blindness to become self-deceived. But those who heed it, and zealously go
about the work of separating their sins from them in order to have the needed
graces, will be opening the door of their hearts that the dear Saviour may
come in and dwell with them. This class you will ever find in perfect har-
mony with the testimony of the Spirit of God."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 257.

STRIVE June 15

1. How should we be responding to the tremendous sacrifice of Christ

to deliver us from sin? 1 Timothy 6: 12.

"Genuine faith always works by love. When you look to Calvary it is

not to quiet your soul in the non-performance of duty, not to compose your-
self to sleep, but to create faith in Jesus, faith that will work, purifying the
soul from the slime of selfishness. When we lay hold of Christ by faith, our
work has just begun. Every man has corrupt and sinful habits that must be
overcome by vigorous warfare. Every soul is required to fight the fight of
faith."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1111.

2. Why is overcoming so essential? Luke 13:24; Psalm 24:3-6.

"Men may have excellent gifts, good ability, splendid qualifications; but
one defect, one secret sin indulged, will prove to the character what the worm-
eaten plank does to the ship-utter disaster and ruin!"-Testimonies, vol. 4,
p.90.
"We are to do all that we can do on our part to fight the good fight of
faith. We are to wrestle, to labor, to strive, to agonize to enter in at the strait
gate. We are to set the Lord ever before us. With clean hands, with pure
hearts, we are to seek to honor God in all our ways. Help has been provided
for us in Him who is mighty to save. The spirit of truth and light will quicken
and renew us by its mysterious workings; for all our spiritual improvement
comes from God, not from ourselves. The true worker will have divine power
to aid him, but the idler will not be sustained by the Spirit of God."-Faith
and Works, p. 48.

FOLLOWING CHRIST June 16

3. What example has Jesus left for us with regard to the work of
overcoming? Hebrews 5:7-9.

"Did not our Saviour have something to overcome? Did not He keep up
the battle with the prince of darkness until He was a victor on every point?
Then He left the work right in the hands of His followers. We have some-
thing to do. Have we not the overcomers' portion, to work out and gain the
victory?"-Faith and Works, pp. 74, 75.

4. In order to overcome the prevailing sins of Laodice a, what aspects of

Christ's victorious life should we consider? 1 Peter 2:21-25.

"He who is the divine Head of the church, the mightiest of conquerors,
would point His followers to His life, His toils, His self-denials, His struggles
and sufferings, through contempt, through rejection, ridicule, scorn, insult,
mockery, falsehood, up the path of Calvary to the scene of the crucifixion,
that they might be encouraged to press on toward the mark for the prize
and reward of the overcomer. Victory is assured through faith and obedi-
ence.
"Let us make an application of the words of Christ to our own individual
cases. Are we poor, and blind, and wretched, and miserable? Then let us
seek the gold and white raiment that He offers. The work of overcoming is
not restricted to the age of the martyrs. The conflict is for us, in these days
of subtle temptation to worldliness, to self-security, to indulgence of pride,
covetousness, false doctrines, and immorality of life."-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 966.
"God leads His people on step by step. The Christian life is a constant
battle and a march. There is no rest from the warfare. It is by constant,
unceasing effort that we maintain the victory over the temptations of Sa-
tan. As a people we are triumphing in the clearness and strength of the truth.
We are fully sustained in our positions by an overwhelming amount of plain
Scriptural testimony. But we are very much wanting in Bible humility, pa-
tience, faith, love, self-denial, watchfulness, and the spirit of sacrifice."-

5. How can we overcome, thus making our calling and election sure? 2

from every defilement; we are to reach the highest standard, believing that
God will help us in our efforts."-Faith and Works, p. 48.

6. Explain the operation of true faith, citing ways by which it can be
developed and strengthened through Christ's power. James 1:27;
2:20-24; 4:8.

"The forgiveness of sin is promised to him who repents and believes;

the crown of life will be the reward of him who is faithful to the end. We
may grow in grace by improving through the grace we already have. We
are to keep ourselves unspotted from the world if we would be found blame-
less in the day of God. Faith and works go hand in hand; they act harmoni-
ously in the work of overcoming."-Faith and Works, p. 48.

THE BATTLE FOR THE BLESSING June 18

7. Why is the patriarch Jacob cited as an example for us living in the

last days? Psalm 46:1; Genesis 32:24-28.

"Will you wrestle with God at this meeting until you know that He re-
veals Himself to you? There are sins that afflict your souls; your sins grieve
you. Will you say, 'Now, Lord, I must have pardon written opposite my name,'
and wrestle and plead with God, laying hold upon the righteousness of Christ.
'He must save; I believe in Him; I take Him at His word.' ...
"God help us, brethren, to wake up and stir ourselves now to do as much
as the paralytic did; to do as much as the impotent man did and as much as
the one with the palsied arm did. They did just as they were told. God help
us to believe on the Son of God and that He can save us to the utmost, and
we shall have everlasting life."-Faith and Works, pp. 75, 76.

8. Why are God's tests so important? Matthew 24: 13.

"At every advanced point the heart is tested and tried a little closer. If
the professed people of God find their hearts opposed to this straight work,
it should convince them that they have a work to do to overcome, if they
would not be spewed out of the mouth of the Lord. Said the angel: 'God will
bring His work closer and closer to test and prove everyone of His people.'
Some are willing to receive one point; but when God brings them to another
testing point, they shrink from it and stand back, because they find that it
strikes directly at some cherished idol. Here they have opportunity to see
what is in their hearts that shuts out Jesus. They prize something higher
than the truth, and their hearts are not prepared to receive Jesus. Individu-
als are tested and proved a length of time to see if they will sacrifice their
idols and heed the counsel of the True Witness. If any will not be purified
through obeying the truth, and overcome their selfishness, their pride, and
evil passions, the angels of God have the charge: 'They are joined to their
idols, let them alone,' and they pass on to their work, leaving these with
their sinful traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels. Those who come
up to every point, and stand every test, and overcome, be the price what it

9. Give details to show how closely God watches the spiritual battle of
every Christian. Malachi 3: 16, 17; Revelation 3:21.

"Oh, how different are the standards by which God and men measure
character. God sees many temptations resisted of which the world and even
near friends never know-temptations in the home, in the heart. He sees
the soul's humility in view of its own weakness; the sincere repentance over
even a thought that is evil. He sees the wholehearted devotion to His ser-
vice. He has noted the hours of hard battle with self-battle that won the
victory. All this God and angels know."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 403, 404.
"We can overcome. Yes; fully, entirely. Jesus died to make a way of es-
cape for us, that we might overcome every evil temper, every sin, every
temptation, and sit down at last with Him."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 144.

The Victorious Life

"Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord
Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).

glorious victory for us. Shall we not appreciate this? All the riches of heaven
were given to us in Jesus." -Messages to Young People) p. 106.

SPIRITUAL VICTORY June 22

1. Explain the victory that Christ desires for each one of us. 1 Peter
1:13-16; 1 John 5:4.

"By living faith, by earnest prayer to God, and depending upon Jesus'
merits, we are clothed with His righteousness, and we are saved. 'Oh, yes,'
some say, 'we are saved in doing nothing. In fact, I am saved. I need not
keep the law of God. I am saved by the righteousness ofJesus Christ.' Christ
came to our world to bring all men back to allegiance to God. To take the
position that you can break God's law, for Christ has done it all, is a posi-
tion of death, for you are as verily a transgressor as anyone.
"Then what is it? It is to hear and to see that with the righteousness of
Christ which you hold by faith, righteousness supplied by His efforts and
His divine power, you can keep the commandments of God."-Faith and Works)
p.71.

2. Name some key aspects of this victory. 1 Corinthians 15:57; 1 John

3:1-3.

"If the soul is to be purified and ennobled, and made fit for the heav-
enly courts, there are two lessons to be learned-self-sacrifice and self-con-
trol. Some learn these important lessons more easily than do others, for
they are exercised by the simple discipline the Lord gives them in gentle-
ness and love. Others require the slow discipline of suffering, that the cleans-
ing fire may purify their hearts of pride and self-reliance, of earthly pas-
sion and self-love, that the true gold of character may appear and that they
may become victors through the grace of Christ."-Faith and Works) p. 86.

CONSTANT CONSECRATION June 23

3. What must we understand in seeking to abide with Christ? Luke

10:27; Colossians 1:21-23 (first part).

"Unless you make an entire consecration to Christ and live in commun-

ion with Him, unless you make Him your Counselor, you will find that your
heart, open to evil thoughts, is easily diverted from the service of God to
the service of self.
"At times you may have a desire to repent. But unless you decidedly
reform and put into practice the truths you have learned, unless you have
an active, working faith, a faith that is constantly increasing in strength, your
repentance is as the morning dew. It will give no permanent relief to the
soul. A repentance caused by a spasmodic exercise of the feelings is a re-
pentance that needs to be repented of; for it is delusive. A violent exercise
of the feelings, which does not produce in you the peaceable fruits of righ-
teousness, leaves you in a worse state than you were in before.
"Every day the tempter will be on your track with some delusive, plau-
sible excuse for your self-serving, your self-pleasing, and you will fall back
into your old practices, neglecting the work of serving God, by which you
would gain hope and comfort and assurance.
"God calls for willing service-service inspired by the love of Jesus in
the heart. God is never satisfied with halfhearted, selfish service. He re-
quires the whole heart, the undivided affections, and a complete faith and
trust in His power to save from sin."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 107, 108.

UNDERSTANDING SANCTIFICATION June 24

5. How can we discern God's genuine work of soul conversion in an age

of many counterfeits? 2 Corinthians 10: 17, 18.

"Spurious sanctification does not glorify God but leads those who claim
it to exalt and glorify themselves."-Faith and Works, p. 87.
" 'A natural Christian!' This deceptive idea has served many as a gar-
ment of self-righteousness, and has led many to a supposed hope in Christ,
who had no experimental knowledge of Him, of His experience, His trials,
His life of self-denial and self-sacrifice. Their righteousness which they count
upon so much is only as filthy rags. Says Christ, the beloved Teacher: 'Who-
soever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and
follow Me.' Yes, follow Him through evil as well as through good report.
Follow Him in befriending the most needy and friendless. Follow Him in

do others good; when reviled, reviling not again; manifesting love and com-
passion for the fallen race. He counted not His life dear, but gave it up for
us all. Follow Him from the lowly manger to the cross. He was our example.
He tells you that if you would be His disciple you must take the cross, the
despised cross, and follow Him."-Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 177,178.

6. Explain the effects of true sanctification. 2 Corinthians 5: 17; Psalm

34:1-5.

"True sanctification is nothing more or less than to love God with all
the heart, to walk in His commandments and ordinances blameless. Sanc-
tification is not an emotion but a heaven-born principle that brings all the
passions and desires under the control of the Spirit of God; and this work
is done through our Lord and Saviour....
"When the grace of Christ is implanted in the soul by the Holy Spirit,
its possessor will become humble in spirit and will seek for the society of
those whose conversation is upon heavenly things. Then the Spirit will take
the things of Christ and show them unto us and will glorify, not the receiver,
but the Giver."-Faith and Works, p. 87.

A LESSON FROM PAUL June 25

7. What was the apostle Paul able to declare at the end of his life? 2
Timothy 1: 12; 4:7, 8. Despite his victorious experience, how did he
view himself? 1 Timothy 1:15. How does this present a stark con-
trast to the Laodicean view?

"The true follower of Christ will make no boastful claims to holiness. It

is by the law of God that the sinner is convicted. He sees his own sinfulness
in contrast with the perfect righteousness which it enjoins, and this leads
him to humility and repentance. He becomes reconciled to God through
the blood of Christ, and as he continues to walk with Him he will be gain-
ing a clearer sense of the holiness of God's character and the far-reaching
nature of His requirements. He will see more clearly his own defects and
will feel the need of continual repentance and faith in the blood of Christ.
"He who bears with him a continual sense of the presence of Christ cannot
indulge self-confidence or self-righteousness. None of the prophets or
apostles made proud boasts of holiness. The nearer they came to perfec-
tion of character, the less worthy and righteous they viewed themselves.
But those who have the least sense of the perfection of Jesus, those whose
eyes are least directed to Him, are the ones who make the strongest claim
to perfection."-Faith and Works, pp. 53, 54.

"Only when selfishness is dead, when strife for supremacy is banished,

when gratitude fills the heart, and love makes fragrant the life-it is only
then that Christ is abiding in the soul, and we are recognized as laborers
together with God."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 402.

10. What daily experience is necessary to prepare and equip us for the
final events? 2 Corinthians 4:5-11,16-18.

"The third angel's message is swelling into a loud cry, and you must
not feel at liberty to neglect the present duty, and still entertain the idea
that at some future time you will be the recipients of great blessing, when
without any effort on your part a wonderful revival will take place. Today
you are to give yourselves to God, that He may make of you vessels unto
honor, and meet for His service. Today you are to give yourself to God, that
you may be emptied of self, emptied of envy, jealousy, evil surmising, strife,
everything that shall be dishonoring to God. Today Y.,ou are to have your
vessel purified that it may be ready for the heavenly dew, ready for the show-
ers of the latter rain; for the latter rain will come, and the blessing of God
will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement. It is our work to-

Living Faith
"Dear Friend:
''The Lord has given me a message for you, and not for you only,
but also for other faithful souls who are troubled by doubts and fears
regarding their acceptance by the Lord Jesus Christ. His word to you
is, 'Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name;
thou art Mine.' You desire to please the Lord, and you can do this by
believing His promises. He is waiting to take you into a harbor of gra-
cious experience, and He bids you, 'Be still, and know that I am God.'
You have had a time of unrest; but Jesus says to you, 'Come unto Me, ...
and I will give you rest.' The joy of Christ in the soul is worth every-
thing. 'Then are they glad,' because they are privileged to rest in the
arms of everlasting love....
"Do not talk of your inefficiency and your defects. When despair
would seem to be sweeping over your soul, look to Jesus, saying, He
lives to make intercession for me. Forget the things that are behind, and
believe the promise, 'I will come to you,' and 'abide with you.' ...
"Is Jesus true? Does He mean what He says? Answer decidedly, Yes,
every word. Then if you have settled this, by faith claim every promise
that He has made, and receive the blessing; for this acceptance by faith
gives life to the soul. You may believe that Jesus is true to you, even
though you feel yourself to be the weakest and most unworthy of His
children. And as you believe, all your dark, brooding doubts are thrown
back upon the archdeceiver who originated them. You can be a great bless-
ing if you will take God at His word. By living faith you are to trust Him,
even though the impulse is strong within you to speak words of distrust. ...
"God's children are not to be subject to feelings and emotions. When
they fluctuate between hope and fear, the heart of Christ is hurt; for He
has given them unmistakable evidence of His love. He wants them to
be established, strengthened, and settled in the most holy faith. He wants
them to do the work He has given them; then their hearts will become
in His hands as sacred harps, every chord of which will send forth praise
and thanksgiving to the One sent by God to take away the sins of the
world.
"Christ's love for His children is as tender as it is strong. And it is
stronger than death; for He died to purchase our salvation, and to make
us one with Him, mystically and eternally one. So strong is His love that
it controls all His powers, and employs the vast resources of heaven in
doing His people good. It is without variableness or shadow of turning-
the same yesterday, today, and forever. Although sin has existed for ages,
trying to counteract this love and obstruct its flowing earthward, it still
flows in rich currents to those for whom Christ died."-Testimonies to
Ministers, pp. 516-519.
