FOREWORD
As the reader will deduce from the title Behold, I Come Quickly!, the lessons for
this quarter deal with the second coming of Christ.
This subject, which is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible, has been the
blessed hope of the church in all ages. It is the keynote of the last message-the pres-
ent truth-to be given to the world.
"An understanding of the hope of Christ's second coming is the key that unlocks
all the history that follows, and explains all the future lessons."-Evangelism. p. 220.
As a people who profess to be anxiously waiting for the coming of Christ, we
should be watching every sign pointing to this event. This will be the greatest event in
the history of the world. Although we are not to attempt to set a date for our Lord's
return, we are told that, by watching the signs given by the prophets and the apostles,
and by Christ Himself (especially in Matthew 24), we should know that the second
coming of Christ is very near. Today we can say that this event is even at the door.
According to the apostle Peter, we are not only to look for, but also to "hasten"
the coming of the Lord (2 Peter 3:12). We can actually "hasten" His coming by being
prepared to meet Him (Luke 12:36-38; Acts 3:19, 20; 2 Peter 3:14) and by doing the
work that He has entrusted to us (Luke 19:12, 13, 15; 14:23; Matthew 24:14). If we
neglect to do so, we will be held responsible for "delaying" the coming of the Lord.
While we are studying these lessons, every Sabbath school student will have a good/
opportunity to examine himself in the light of these questions: By my life, have I been
"hastening" or "delaying" the coming of the Lord? If I have good reasons to believe
that I have been "delaying" His coming, how can I make a V-turn in my life and start
doing, wholeheartedly, what the Lord wants me to do? Clear answers to these ques-
tions will be found in these lessons.
It is not enough for us to believe in the soon coming of Christ, to know everything
that is written about it, and to preach it to others. There are very many professed
.believers in the threefold message who are "in the broad way" while professing to
"be of the number" who are "traveling the narrow way." They are deceiving them-
selves and those that listen to them. Their inconsistency leads sinners to harden their
hearts with this excuse: "There is no distinction between us. Weare alike; we dress,
and talk, and act alike" (Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 128). These professed believers will be
"weighed in the balance and found wanting" (Early Writings, p. 37). The present
lessons show us how we can avoid this type of spiritual shipwreck.
May the study of these lessons lead both students and teachers to a deeper con-
secration as they come closer to Christ and as they draw closer together in Christian
fellowship. Let us all unite in making intercession for the revelation of the Holy Spirit,
for the closing of the work, so that we may be prepared in eager expectation as were
the true people of God in 1844.

Special Project Offering
for the French Polynesia Field

The Territoire de la Polynesie Fran<;aise is composed of a group of

islands located in the south central Pacific. Its total land area is about 1,550
square miles (4,000 square kilometers). The capital of the Territory is
Papeete, situated in Tahiti, the main island of the group. French and Tahi-
tian are the official languages. Among the population of approximately
200,000, the religious affiliations are: Protestants 47%; Roman Catholic
39%; other Christian 8% and nonreligious 6%.
The SDA Reform Movement French Polynesia Field was organized as a
Mission in 1982 with the baptism of 24 souls on the island of Tahiti. The
brethren soon developed the work on other islands of French Polynesia,
where groups and churches have since been established. They built in
Papeete-at their own expense-the Field headquarters with offices and
other facilities to accommodate guests, and a meeting place for worship.
The message of reformation has also reached the remote group of islands
called Marquesas. On one of those islands the Reform Movement was the first
non-Roman Catholic religious organization to have gained a foothold. The
French Polynesia Field then extended their help to other French-speaking
islands, such as New Caledonia (in Melanesia), and Martinique and Guadeloupe
(in the Caribbean Sea).
As the work expanded to various islands of the area, such as Bora-Bora,
Marquesas, Moorea, and Raiatea, the need to build chapels for worship
became evident. The local brethren are doing their best to meet the demand
for houses of worship, but they also must appeal to the brethren all over the
world to come to their aid by giving a generous offering for this purpose.
The Special Project Offering for this quarter is designated to help build a
chapel at Papara, on the southwest coast of Tahiti. The Bible and the Spirit
of Prophecy tell us that God has a firmament of chosen ones among the in-
habitants of the islands of the sea who shall shine amidst the darkness cover-
ing this world. (See Isaiah 11:11; Prophets and Kings, pp. 188, 189.)
We thank you in advance for your willingness to give a generous offer-
ing to promote the worship of the true God in the French-speaking islands.

A GLORIOUS, JOY-INSPIRING HOPE

"To God's pilgrim people, so long left to sojourn in 'the region and shadow of
death,' a precious, joy-inspiring hope is given in the promise of His appear-
ing, who is 'the resurrection and the life,' to 'bring home again His banished: "
- The Great Controversy, p. 299.

ANIMATED BY GOD'S PROMISES September 27

1. Which Old Testament prophet looked forward to Jesus' second coming?

Jude 14,15.

"By the spirit of prophecy [God] carried [Enoch] down through the generations
that should live after the Flood, and showed him the great events connected with the
second coming of Christ and the end of the world. . . . .
"In prophetic vision he was instructed concerning the death of Christ, and was
shown His coming in glory, attended by all the holy angels, to ransom His people
from the grave. He also saw the corrupt state of the world when Christ should appear
the second time-that there would be a boastful, presumptuous, self-willed genera-
tion, denying the only God and the Lord Jesus Christ, trampling upon the law, and
despising the atonement. He saw the righteous crowned with glory and honor, and
the wicked banished from the presence of the Lord, and destroyed by fire."-Patriarchs
and Prophets, pp. 85, 86.

2. How did God's people in Old Testament times express their hope in Christ's
second coming? Psalm 50:1-5; 96:11-13.

"The coming of Christ to usher in the reign of righteousness has inspired the
most sublime and impassioned utterances of the sacred writers. The poets and proph-
ets of the Bible have dwelt upon it in words glowing with celestial fire." - The Great
Controversy, p. 300.

D Monday
JOYOUS CONFIDENCE September 28

3. With what exalted language did the prophet Habakkuk describe Jesus'
return? Habakkuk 3:3-6.

-5-
"Holy men of old looked forward to the advent of the Messiah in glory, as the
consummation of their hope."-The Great Controversy, p. 299.

4. What comforting, encouraging promise was given to the disciples? Acts

1:10,11.

"The angels who lingered upon Olivet after Christ's ascension repeated to the
disciples the promise of His return: "This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into
heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
"Precious, indeed, was this promise to those sorrowing disciples, that they should
again see Jesus, who was greatly beloved by them all. Precious also is the promise to
every true follower of Christ. None who truly love Jesus will be sorry that He is com-
ing again."- The Faith I Live By, p. 351. [Author's emphasis.]

PATIENT PERSEVERANCE September 29

5. What did Jesus' return mean to the apostle Paul? Titus 2:13.

"We are pilgrims and strangers who are waiting, hoping, and praying for that
blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. If we be-
lieve this and bring it into our practical life, what vigorous action would this faith and
hope inspire; what fervent love one for another; what careful holy living for the glory
of God; and in our respect for the recompense of the reward, what distinct lines of
demarcation would be evidenced between us and the world."-Evangelism, p. 220.
"Amid suffering and persecution, the 'appearing of the great God and our Sav-
iour Jesus Christ' was the 'blessed hope.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 302.

6. How will Jesus appear to those who are waiting for Him? Hebrews 9:28 (last
part).

"So Christ, at the close of His work as mediator, will appear, 'without sin unto
salvation' (Hebrews 9:28), to bless His waiting people with eternallife."-The Great
Controversy, p. 485.
"Jesus rides forth as a mighty conqueror. Not now a 'Man of Sorrows,' to drink
the bitter. cup of shame and woe, He comes, victor in heaven and earth, to judge the
living and the dead.... No crown of thorns now mars that sacred head; but a diadem
of glory rests on His holy brow. His countenance outshines the dazzling brightness of
the noonday sun."-Ibid., p.641.

o Wednesday
LONGING FOR THE DAY OF HIS RETURN September 30

7. What message was contained in Luther's sermons in line with the teachings
of Paul? Hebrews 9:27.

"Luther declared: 'I persuade myself verily, that the day of judgment will not be
absent full three hundred years. God will not, cannot, suffer this wicked world much
longer.' 'The great day is drawing near in which the kingdom of abominations shall be
overthrown.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 303.

8. What conviction did other Reformers have? Revelation 16:15.

-6-
" 'This aged world is not far from its end,' said Melanchthon. Calvin bids Chris-
tians 'not to hesitate, ardently desiring the day of Christ's coming as of all events
most auspicious;' and declares that 'the whole family of the faithful will keep in view
that day.' 'We must hunger after Christ, we must seek, contemplate,' he says, 'till the
dawning of that great day, when our Lord will fully manifest the glory of His
kingdom.' ...
" 'Has not the Lord Jesus carried up our flesh into heaven?' said Knox, the
Scotch Reformer, 'and shall He not return? We know that He shall return, and that
with expedition.' Ridley and Latimer, who laid down their lives for the truth, looked
in faith for the Lord's coming. Ridley wrote: 'The world without doubt-this I do
believe, and therefore I say it-draws to an end. Let us with John, the servant of God,
cry in our hearts unto our Saviour Christ, Come, Lord Jesus, come.' "-The Great Con-
troversy, p. 303.

o Thursday
ACTIVELY WAITING FOR THE DAY OF PROMISE October 1

9. What should we do to be able to stand on the day of Christ's coming? Amos

4:12 (last part); Zephaniah 2:3.

"Do we expect to get to heaven at last and join the heavenly choir? Just as we go
into the grave we will come up, as far as the character is concerned....
"Now is the time to receive grace and strength and power to combine with our
human efforts that we can form characters for everlasting life."-In Heavenly Places,
p.369.

10. How do those who are waiting for the Lord respond to Jesus' promise that
He will come soon? Revelation 22:20.

"Weare almost home; we shall soon hear the voice of the Saviour richer than
any music, saying, Your warfare is accomplished. Enter into the joy of thy Lord.
Blessed, blessed benediction; I want to hear it from His immortal lips. I want to praise
Him; I want to honor Him that sitteth on the throne. I want my voice to echo and re-
echo through the courts of heaven. Will you be there? ... God help us, and fill us with
all fullness and power, and then we can taste of the joys of the world to come."-
In Heavenly Places, p. 368.

JESUS' PROPHECIES CONCERNING

THE SIGNS OF HIS COMING

"Christ had bidden His people watch for the signs of His advent and rejoice
as they should behold the tokens of their coming King." - The Great Controversy,
p.308.

KEY TEXT: "SO likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that
the kingdom of God is nigh at hand" (Luke 21:31).

PREVIEW OF COMING EVENTS October 4

1. What prediction did Jesus make concerning the glorious temple in Jerusalem
-something the disciples couldn't fathom? Matthew 24:2.

"As Christ's attention was attracted to the magnificence of the temple, what
must have been the unuttered thoughts of that Rejected One! The view before Him
was indeed beautiful, but He said with sadness, I see it all. The buildings are indeed
wonderful. You point to these walls as apparently indestructible; but listen to My
words: The day will come when 'there shall not be left one stone upon another, that
shall not be thrown down.' "-The Desire of Ages, p. 627.

2. What questions intrigued the disciples? How did they connect the predic-
tions of Jesus with the end of the world? Matthew 24:3.

"With the overthrow of Jerusalem the disciples associated the events of Christ's
personal coming in temporal glory to take the throne of universal empire, to punish
the impenitent Jews, and to break from off the nation the Romqn yoke. The Lord had
told them that He would come the second time. Hence at the mention of judgments
upon Jerusalem, their minds reverted to that coming."-The Great Controversy, p. 25.

D Monday
THE APPROACHING TIMES AND SIGNS October 5

3. What would come upon the believers after the destruction of Jerusalem?
Matthew 24:21, 22.

"From the destruction of Jerusalem, Christ passed on rapidly to the greater

event, the last link in the chain of this earth's history-the coming of the Son of God in

-8-
majesty and glory. Between these two events, there lay open to Christ's view long
centuries of darkness, centuries for His church marked with blood and tears and
agony."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 630, 631.
"In the Saviour's conversation with His disciples upon Olivet, after describing
the long period of trial for the church-the 1260 years of papal persecution, concern-
ing which He had promised that the tribulation should be shortened-He thus men-
tioned certain events to precede His coming, and fixed the time when the first of
these should be witnessed: ... The 1260 days, or years, terminated in 1798."-The
Great Controversy, p. 306.

4. What signs would indicate that Jesus' coming is imminent? Matthew 24:29.

"The Saviour gives signs of His coming, and more than this, He fixes the time
when the first of these signs shall appear: [Matthew 24:29-31 quoted.]
"At the close of the great papal persecution, Christ declared, the sun should be
darkened, and the moon should not give her light."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 631, 632.
D Tuesday
FULFILLMENT OF THE PROPHECIES October 6
5. What was the first sign which was to precede Christ's return? Revelation
6:12 (first part).

"In fulfillment of this prophecy there occurred, in the year 1755, the most terri-
ble earthquake that has ever been recorded. Though commonly known as the earth-
quake of Lisbon, it extended to the greater part of Europe, Africa, and America."-
The Great Controversy, p. 304.

6. When was the next sign fulfilled? Revelation 6:12 (last part).

"Twenty-five years later appeared the next sign mentioned in the prophecy-the
darkening of the sun and moon. What rendered this more striking was the fact that
the time of its fulfillment had been definitely pointed out....
" 'Almost, if not altogether alone, as the most mysterious and as yet unexplained
phenomenon of its kind, ... stands the dark day of May 19, 1780-a most unaccount-
able darkening of the whole visible heavens and atmosphere in New England.' "-
The Great Controversy, p. 306.

D Wednesday
IMPRESSIVE EVENTS October 7

7. What other sign was announced by Jesus and when was it fulfilled? Mark
13:25.

"In 1833, two years after Miller began to present in public the evidences of
Christ's soon coming, the last of the signs appeared which were promised by the Sav-
iour as tokens of His second advent. Said Jesus: 'The stars shall fall from heaven.'
Matthew 24:29. And John in the Revelation declared, as he beheld in vision the
scenes that should herald the day of God: 'The stars of heaven fell unto the earth,
even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.'
Revelation 6:13. This prophecy received a striking and impressive fulfillment in the
great meteoric shower of November 13, 1833. That was the most extensive and won-
derful display of falling stars which has ever been recorded."- The Great Controversy,
p.333.

-9-
8. What impression did these singular events make on the people? Luke 21:25,
26.

The earthquake: " 'The terror of the people was beyond description. Nobody
wept; it was beyond tears. They ran hither and thither, delirious with horror and as-
tonishment, beating their faces and breasts, crying, 'Misericordia! the world's at an
end!' "- The Great Controversy, p. 305. [Author's emphasis.]
The dark day: " 'Fear, anxiety, and awe gradually filled the minds of the peo-
ple. Women stood at the door, looking out upon the dark landscape; men returned
from their labor in the fields; the carpenter left his tools, the blacksmith his forge, the
trademan his counter. Schools were dismissed, and tremblingly the children fled
homeward. Travelers put up at the nearest farmhouse. 'What is coming?' queried
every lip and heart. It seemed as if a hurricane was about to dash across the land, or
as if it was the day of the consummation of all things.' "-Ibid., pp. 306, 307.
The falling of the stars: " 'The whole firmament, over all the United States,
being then, for hours, in fiery commotion! No celestial phenomenon has ever occurred
in this country, since its first settlement, which was viewed with such intense admira-
tion by one class in the community, or with so much dread and alarm by another.' "
-Ibid., p. 333.

D Thursday
WONDERFUL RESULTS October 8

9. What counsel was heeded by the people who were stirred by the events
predicted by Christ? Acts 3:19, 20.

"Those who accepted the advent doctrine were roused to the necessity of repen-
tance and humiliation before God. Many had long been halting between Christ and
the world; now they felt that it was time to take a stand. 'The things of eternity
assumed to them an unwonted reality. Heaven was brought near, and they felt
themselves guilty before God.'-Bliss, page 146. Christians were quickened to new
spiritual life. They were made to feel that time was short, that what they had to do for
their fellowmen must be done quickly. Earth receded, eternity seemed to open before
them, and the soul, with all that pertained to its immortal weal or woe, was felt to
eclipse every temporal object." - The Great Controversy, p. 340.

10. Why did Jesus command us to pay attention to the predicted signs? Luke
21:28-31; Matthew 24:33.

MESSAGES OF WARNING FOR OUR DAY

"Today the signs of the times declare that we are standing on the threshold of
great and solemn events. Everything in our world is in agitation. Before our
eyes is fulfilling the Saviour's prophecy of the events to precede His coming."

man be" (Matthew 24:37).

THE TIME IN WHICH WE LIVE October 11

1. To what time in the history of the world did Jesus compare our days? Mat-
thew 24:37-39; Genesis 6:5, 13.

"The same sins exist in our day which brought the wrath of God upon the world
in the days of Noah. Men and women now carry their eating and drinking to gluttony
and drunkenness. This prevailing sin, the indulgence of perverted appetite, inflamed
the passions of men in the days of Noah and led to general corruption, until their
violence and crimes reached to heaven, and God washed the earth of its moral pollu-
tion by a flood."-Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 163.

2. What do believers have to face today? 2 Peter 3:3, 4.

"The world, full of rioting, full of godless pleasure, is asleep, asleep in carnal
security. Men are putting afar off the coming of the Lord. They laugh at warnings.
the proud boast is made, 'All things continue as they were from the beginning.' 'To-
morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.' 2 Peter 3:4; Isaiah 56:12."-
The Desire of Ages, p. 635.

D Monday
CONDITIONS IN THE LAST DAYS October 12

3. What comparison did Paul make between the spiritual attitude in his days
and in our days? 2 Timothy 3:1-5, 13; Ezekiel 33:32.

"The Spirit works upon man's heart, according to his desire and consent implant-
ing in him a new nature.... They do not know God. They have not studied His char-
acter; they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do not know how to
trust, how to look and live. Their service to God degenerates into a form.... The
apostle Paul points out that this will be the special characteristic of those who live just
before Christ's second coming."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 411.

-11-
4. How are people deceived in the last days? James 5:1-3; Luke 12:17-19.

"By the parable of the foolish rich man, Christ showed the folly of those who
make the world their all. This man had received everything from God. The sun had
been permitted to shine upon his land; for its rays fall on the just and on the unjust.
The showers of heaven descend on the evil and on the good. The Lord had caused
vegetation to flourish, and the fields to bring forth abundantly. The rich man was in
perplexity as to what he should do with his produce. His barns were full to overflow-
ing, and he had no place to put the surplus of his harvest. He did not think of God,
from whom all his mercies had come. He did not realize that God had made him a
steward of His goods that he might help the needy. He had a blessed opportunity of
being God's almoner, but he thought only of ministering to his own comfort."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 256.

D Tuesday
A SUBTLE DANGER October 13

5. With what words did Jesus urge His disciples to be on the alert? Matthew
24:4, 5, 11, 23-26.

"This sign is given as a sign of the second advent. Even now false christs and
false prophets are showing signs and wonders to seduce His disciples. Do we not hear
the cry, 'Behold, He is in the desert'? Have not thousands gone forth into the desert,
hoping to find Christ? And from thousands of gatherings where men profess to hold
communion with departed spirits is not the call now heard, 'Behold, He is in the
secret chambers'? This is the very claim that spiritism puts forth. But what says
Christ? 'Believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto
the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.' "- The Desire of Ages, p. 631.

6. How are the apostle Paul's words being fulfilled today? 1 Timothy 4:1.

"When Satan has undermined faith in the Bible, he directs men to other sources
for light and power. Thus he insinuates himself. Those who turn from the plain
teaching of Scripture and the convicting power of God's Holy Spirit are inviting the
control of demons. Criticism and speculation concerning the Scriptures have opened
the way for spiritism and theosophy-those modernized forms of ancient heathenism
-to gain a foothold even in the professed churches of our Lord Jesus Christ."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 258.

WARNING AGAINST SATAN'S DECEPTIONS October 14

7. What methods does Satan use to deceive people? 2 Thessalonians 2:9.

"[Satan] has power to bring before men the appearance of their departed friends.
The counterfeit is perfect; the familiar look, the words, the tone, are reproduced with
marvelous distinctness. Many are comforted with the assurance that their loved ones
are enjoying the bliss of heaven, and without suspicion of danger, they give ear 'to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.' "- The Great Controversy, p. 552.

8. What overpowering delusion will be the climax of deception at the end of

time? 2 Corinthians 11:14.

-12 -
"As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will per-
sonate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the
consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ
has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a
majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God
given by John in the Revelation. Revelation 1:13-15. The glory that surrounds him is
unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph
rings out upon the air: 'Christ has come! Christ has come!' The people prostrate
themselves in adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands and pronounces a
blessing upon them, as Christ blessed His disciples when He was upon the earth. His
voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he pre-
sents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered."-The
Great Controversy, p. 624.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY October 15

9. What work are we to do to spread light and hope? Matthew 24:14.

"Long has God waited for the spirit of service to take possession of the whole
church so that everyone shall be working for Him according to his ability. When the
members of the church of God do their appointed work in the needy fields at home
and abroad, in fulfillment of the gospel commission, the whole world will soon be
warned and the Lord Jesus will return to this earth with power and great glory. "-The
Acts of the Apostles, p. 111.

10. What special message of warning will be proclaimed by faithful believers

before probation closes? Revelation 14:6-12.

"From town to town, from city to city, from country to country, the warning
message is to be proclaimed, not with outward display, but in the power of the Spirit,
by men of faith.
"And it is necessary that the best kind of labor be given. The time has come, the
important time, when, through God's messengers, the scroll is being unrolled to the
world. The truth comprised in the first, second, and third angels' messages must go
to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; it must lighten the darkness of every
continent and extend to the islands of the sea....
"Let there be the wisest planning for the success of the work. Decided efforts

FALSE DOCTRINES CONCERNING

CHRIST'S RETURN

"There are dangerous heresies that will be presented as Bible doctrines; and
we are to become acquainted with the Bible so that we may know how to
meet them. The faith of every individual will be tested, and everyone will
pass through a trial of close criticism."-Evangelism, pp. 590,591.

great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall
deceive the very elect" (Matthew 24:24).

EXHORTATION TO BE VIGILANT October 18

1. What cunning does the enemy of souls use to entice believers? Matthew
24:11,24.

"Satan's angels are wise to do evil, and they will create that which some will
claim to be advanced light, and will proclaim it as new and wonderful; yet while in
some respects the message may be truth, it will be mingled with human inventions,
and will teach for doctrine the commandments of men. If there was ever a time when
we should watch and pray in real earnest, it is now. Many apparently good things will
need to be carefully considered with much prayer, for they are specious devices of the
enemy to lead souls in a path which lies so close to the path of truth that it will be
scarcely distinguishable from it."-Evangelism, p. 590.

2. In giving counsel, what was the apostle Paul's objective? Ephesians 4:14.

"The testimony of the Spirit of God is true. Change not your faith for any phase
of doctrine, however pleasing it may appear, that will seduce the soul.
"The fallacies of Satan are now being multiplied, and those who swerve from the
path of truth will lose their bearings. Having nothing to which to anchor, they will
drift from one delusion to another, blown about by the winds of strange doctrines.
Satan has come down with great power."-Evangelism, p. 362.

DANGEROUS DELUSIONS October 19

3. In the past, how did God's adversary deceive the people? Exodus 7:10-13;
2 Timothy 3:8.

-14 -
"The magicians also showed signs and wonders; for they wrought not by their
own skill alone, but by the power of their god, Satan, who assisted them in coun-
terfeiting the work of Jehovah.
"The magicians did not really cause their rods to become serpents; but by magic,
aided by the great deceiver, they were able to produce this appearance. It was beyond
the power of Satan to change the rods to living serpents. The prince of evil, though
possessing all the wisdom and might of an angel fallen, has not power to create, or to
give life; this is the prerogative of God alone. But all that was in Satan's power to do,
he did; he produced a counterfeit. To human sight the rods were changed to serpents.
Such they were believed to be by Pharaoh and his court."-PatriarchsandProphets, p. 264.

4. What deceptive arts does the enemy of souls use today? Revelation 13:13.

"Satan also works with lying wonders, even bringing down fire from heaven in
the sight of men. Revelation 13:13. Thus the inhabitants of the earth will be brought
to take their stand."-The Great Controversy, p. 612.
"Men are deceived by the miracles which Satan's agents have power to do, not
which they pretend to do."-Ibid., p. 553.

DECEPTIVE SIGNS AND WONDERS October 20

5. What is Satan not permitted to counterfeit? Matthew 24:26,27; 2 Thessalo-

nians 2:9, 10.

"Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ's advent. The Saviour
has warned His people against deception upon this point, and has clearly foretold the
manner of His second coming.... This coming there is no possibility of counterfeit-
ing. It will be universally known-witnessed by the whole world."- The Great Contro-
versy, p. 625.

6. Of what is God's great enemy aware? Revelation 12:12.

"[Revelation 12:12 quoted.] Fearful are the scenes which call forth this exclama-
tion from the heavenly voice. The wrath of Satan increases as his time grows short,
and his work of deceit and destruction will reach its culmination in the time of trouble.
"Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the heavens,
in token of the power of miracle-working demons." - The Great Controversy, pp. 623, 624.

GOD'S SECRET October 21

7. What important detail was not revealed concerning Christ's return? Mat·
thew 24:36, 42.

"The day and the hour of His coming Christ has not revealed. He stated plainly
to His disciples that He Himself could not make known the day or the hour of His sec-
ond appearing. Had He been at liberty to reveal this, why need He have exhorted
them to maintain an attitude of constant expectancy? There are those who claim to
know the very day and hour of our Lord's appearing. Very earnest are they in map-
ping out the future. But the Lord has warned them off the ground they occupy. The
exact time of the second coming of the Son of man is God's mystery."-The Desire of
Ages, pp. 632, 633.

-15 -
"You will not be able to say that He will come in one, two, or five years, neither
are you to put off His coming by stating that it may not be for ten or twenty years....
We are not to know the definite time either for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit or for
the coming of Christ."-Evangelism, p. 221.

8. What is the danger in trying to set the date for Jesus' coming? Matthew 24:48.

"Satan is ever ready to fill the mind with theories and calculations that will divert
men from the present truth, and disqualify them for the giving of the third angel's
message to the world. "-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 186.
"The times and seasons God has put in His own power. And why has not God
given us this knowledge?-Because we would not make a right use of it if He did. A
condition of things would result from this knowledge among our people that would
greatly retard the work of God in preparing a people to stand in the great day that is to
come."-Evangelism, p. 221.

A SURE PROTECTION October 22

9. What is the meaning of the prophecy that the day of the Lord will come "as
a thief in the night"? 1 Thessalonians 5:2.

"The day of God will come unawares to the ungodly. When life is going on in its
unvarying round; when men are absorbed in pleasure, in business, in traffic, in money-
making; when religious leaders are magnifying the world's progress and enlighten-
ment, and the people are lulled in a false security-then, as the midnight thief steals
within the unguarded dwelling, so shall sudden destruction come upon the careless
and ungodly, 'and they shall not escape.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 38.

10. How can a Christian be protected from all these deceptions? 1 Peter 4:7,8;
1 Thessalonians 5:6-8; Isaiah 8:20.

"Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have
received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes
the world captive."-The Great Controversy, p. 625.

BEHOLD, HE IS COMING! October 25

1. According to the biblical description, what will Jesus' coming be like? Acts
1:11.

"Christ had ascended to heaven in the form of humanity. The disciples had
beheld the cloud receive Him. The same Jesus who had walked and talked and prayed
with them; who had broken bread with them; who had been with them in their boats
on the lake; and who had that very day toiled with them up the ascent of Olivet-the
same Jesus had now gone to share His Father's throne. And the angels had assured
them that the very One whom they had seen go up into heaven, would come again
even as He had ascended. "-The Desire of Ages, p. 832.

2. To whom will Jesus' appearing be visible? Revelation 1:7; Matthew 24:30.

"Those who mocked and smote Him will be there. The priests and rulers will
behold again the scene in the judgment hall. Every circumstance will appear before

"The truths of prophecy are bound up together, and as we study them, they form
a beautiful cluster of practical Christian truth. All the discourses that we give are
plainly to reveal that we are waiting, working, and praying for the coming of the Son

heavens are rolled together as a scroll, the earth trembles before Him, and every
mountain and island is moved out of its place."-The Great Controversy, pp. 641, 642.

8. How did the prophet Isaiah describe the divine judgments soon to fall on the
world? Isaiah 24:17-23.

"The mountains shake like a reed in the wind, and ragged rocks are scattered on
every side. There is a roar as of a coming tempest. The sea is lashed into fury. There
is heard the shriek of a hurricane like the voice of demons upon a mission of destruc-
tion. The whole earth heaves and swells like the waves of the sea. Its surface is break-
ing up. Its very foundations seem to be giving way. Mountain chains are sinking. In-
habited islands disappear. The seaports that have become like Sadam for wickedness

TWO DISTINCT GROUPS November 1

1. What will be the reaction of those who despise God's gracious offer? Revela-
tion 6:15-17.

"When sinners are compelled to look upon Him who clothed His divinity with
humanity, and who still wears this garb, their confusion is indescribable. The scales
fall from their eyes, and they see that which before they would not see. They realize
what they might have been had they received Christ, and improved the opportunities
granted them. They see the law which they have spurned, exalted even as God's
throne is exalted. They see God Himself giving reverence to His law."-The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1069.
"They will call on the rocks and mountains to fall on them and hide them from
the face of Him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. 'The wrath
of the Lamb'-One who ever showed Himself full of tenderness, patience, and long-
suffering, who, having given Himself up as the sacrificial offering, was led as a lamb
to the slaughter, to save sinners from the doom now falling upon them because they
would not allow Him to take away their guilt."-Ibid., p. 1070.

2. On the other hand, how will Christ's disciples view this day? Isaiah 25:9.

"To His faithful followers Christ has been a daily companion and familiar friend.
They have lived in close contact, in constant communion with God. Upon them the
glory of the Lord has risen. In them the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in
the face of Jesus Christ has been reflected. Now they rejoice in the undimmed rays of
the brightness and glory of the King in His majesty. They are prepared for the com-
munion of heaven; for they have heaven in their hearts....
"With rejoicing that their redemption draweth nigh, they go forth to meet the
Bridegroom, saying, 'Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save

EVERYTHING IS BROUGHT TO LIGHT November 3

5. What will be revealed at the coming of Christ? 1 Corinthians 4:5; Ec-

"God will bring to light every word and every action. He is in every place. His
messengers, although unseen, are visitors in the workroom and in the sleeping apart-
ment. The hidden works of darkness will be brought to light. The thoughts, the in-
tents and purposes of the heart, will stand revealed. All things are naked and open to
the eyes of Him with whom we have to do."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 590.

6. In the heavenly judgment, what will be the deciding factor? Luke 10:25-28;
Matthew 25:34-40.

"Love is the basis of godliness. Whatever the profession, no man has pure love
to God unless he has unselfish love for his brother. But we can never come into
possession of this spirit by trying to love others. What is needed is the love of Christ in
the heart. When self is merged in Christ, love springs forth spontaneously. The com-
pleteness of Christian character is attained when the impulse to help and bless others
springs constantly from within-when the sunshine of heaven fills the heart and is
revealed in the countenance."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 384. [Author's emphasis.]

CALLED FOR SERVICE November 8

1. What parable did Jesus present in connection with His return? Matthew
25:13-15.

"The man traveling into a far country represents Christ, who, when speaking
this parable, was soon to depart from this earth to heaven. The 'bondservants' (R.V.),
or slaves, of the parable, represent the followers of Christ." -Christ's Object Lessons,
pp. 325, 326.
"Christ's followers have been redeemed for service. Our Lord teaches that the
true object of life is ministry. Christ Himself was a worker, and to all His followers He
gives the law of service-service to God and to their fellowmen. Here Christ has
presented to the world a higher conception of life than they had ever known. By living
to minister for others, man is brought into connection with Christ. The law of service
becomes the connecting link which binds us to God and to our fellowmen."-Ibid.,
p.326.

2. With what were the talents compared? 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. What other
significance do they have?

"The special gifts of the Spirit are not the only talents represented in the par-
able. It includes all gifts and endowments, whether original or acquired, natural or

RIGHT USE OF ENTRUSTED GOODS November 9

3. In view of the seriousness of our time, how are we using the talents that
have been entrusted to us? Matthew 25:16-18.

"The question that most concerns us is not, How much have I received? but,
What am I doing with that which I have? The development of all our powers is the
first duty we owe to God and to our fellowmen. No one who is not growing daily in
capability and usefulness is fulfilling the purpose of life. In making a profession of
faith in Christ we pledge ourselves to become all that it is possible for us to be as
workers for the Master, and we should cultivate every faculty to the highest degree of
perfection, that we may do the greatest amount of good of which we are capable."-
Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 329, 330.

4. What result can a person achieve through the right use of his gifts? Matthew
25:20,22.

"Talents used are talents multiplied. Success is not the result of chance or of
destiny; it is the outworking of God's own providence, the reward of faith and discre-
tion, of virtue and persevering effort. The Lord desires us to use every gift we have;
and if we do this, we shall have greater gifts to use. He does not supernaturally endow
us with the qualifications we lack; but while we use that which we have, He will work
with us to increase and strengthen every faculty. By every wholehearted, earnest sacrifice
for the Master's service our powers will increase."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 353, 354.

GOD'S CHARACTER IS REVEALED November 10

5. How was the unfaithful servant reproached for having misused his talent?
Matthew 25:24-28.

"There are many who in their hearts charge God with being a hard master because
He claims their possessions and their service. But we can bring to God nothing that is
not already His.... All things are God's, not only by creation, but by redemption. All
the blessings of this life and of the life to come are delivered to us stamped with the
cross of Calvary. Therefore the charge that God is a hard master, reaping where He
has not sown, is false." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 362.
"Satan represents God's law of love as a law of selfishness. He declares that it is
impossible for us to obey its precepts."- The Desire of Ages, p. 24.

6. Describe some of the Lord's traits of character with which His servants
should be acquainted. Philippians 2:5-8.

"In stooping to take upon Himself humanity, Christ revealed a character the op-
posite of the character of Satan. But He stepped still lower in the path of humiliation.
'Being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto
death, even the death of the cross.' Philippians 2:8."-The Desire of Ages, p. 25.
"By His life and His death, Christ has achieved even more than recovery from
the ruin wrought through sin. It was Satan's purpose to bring about an eternal separa-
tion between God and man; but in Christ we become more closely united to God than
if we had never fallen. In taking our nature, the Saviour has bound Himself to human-
ity by a tie that is never to be broken."-Ibid.

"The work done reveals the character of the worker."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 360.
"It is the faithfulness, the loyalty to God, the loving service, that wins the divine

noted in the books of heaven."-Ibid., p. 361.
"What we shall be in heaven is the reflection of what we are now in character
and holy service."-Ibid.

8. How can we follow Christ's example in devotion and obedience? 1 Corin-

thians·9:16.

"The work to which as Christians we are called is to cooperate with Christ for
the salvation of souls. This work we have entered into covenant with Him to do. To
neglect the work is to prove disloyal to Christ. But in order to accomplish this work
we must follow His example of faithful, conscientious attention to the little things.
This is the secret of success in every line of Christian effort and influence.

BLESSING AND PEACE FROM THE LORD November 12

9. How far are we responsible for the gifts that have been entrusted to us?
Luke 12:48 (last part).

"For all that we might become through the right use of our talents God holds us
responsible. We shall be judged according to what we ought to have done, but did not
accomplish because we did not use our powers to glorify God. Even if we do not lose
our souls, we shall realize in eternity the result of our unused talents. For all the

loss." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 363.

10. At Jesus' return, what will be the realization of those who have been given
much? Matthew 25:21,23.

"The capital was the Lord's; the improvement is His. Had not the Saviour
bestowed upon them His love and grace, they would have been bankrupt for eternity.
"But when the Master receives the talents, He approves and rewards the workers
as though the merit were all their own. His countenance is full of joy and satisfaction.
He is filled with delight that He can bestow blessings upon them. For every service
and every sacrifice He requites them, not because it is a debt He owes, but because
His heart is overflowing with love and tenderness." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 361.

Romans 3:24-26; 8:1-4.

"The shiner may err, but he is not cast off without mercy. His only hope, how-
ever, is repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is the Father's
prerogative to forgive our transgressions and sins, because Christ has taken upon
Himself our guilt and reprieved us, imputing to us His own righteousness. His
sacrifice satisfies fully the demands of justice."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White

GOD'S LOVE FOR US November 16

3. How complete is salvation? 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:19-21.

"Christ gave Himself, an atoning sacrifice, for the saving of a lost world. He was
treated as we deserve, in order that we might be treated as He deserves. He was con-
demned for our sins, in which He had no share that we might be justified by His

- 26-
righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that
we might receive the life which was His. 'With His stripes we are healed.' Isaiah
53:5." - Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 208, 209.

4. Who can experience the rich blessings of God's love? Matthew 11:28; Mark
1:15; John 3:16,36.

"Then in the name that is above every name, the only name given among men
whereby men can be saved, claim the promise of God, saying, 'Lord, forgive my sin; I
put my hands into Thy hand for help, and I must have it, or perish. I now believe.'
The Saviour says to the repenting sinner, 'No man cometh unto the Father, but by
Me' (John 14:6), 'and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out' (John 6:37). 'I
am thy salvation' (Psalm 35:3)."-Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 333, 334.

A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST November 17

5. What new attitude and behavior become apparent? 2 Corinthians 5:17;

John 15:10; Galatians 5:6.

"The faith which avails to bring us in vital contact with Christ expresses on our
part supreme preference, perfect reliance, entire consecration. This faith works by
love and purifies the soul. It works in the life of the follower of Christ true obedience
to God's commandments; for love to God and love to man will be the result of vital
connection with Christ."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 334.
"Nothing but divine power can regenerate the human heart and imbue souls with
the love of Christ, which will ever manifest itself with love for those for whom He
died.... When a man is converted to God, a new moral taste is supplied, a new motive
power is given, and he loves the things that God loves; for his life is bound up by the
golden chain of the immutable promises to the life of Jesus. Love, joy, peace, and inex-
pressible gratitude will pervade the soul."-lbid., p. 336.

6. What deep desire will continually fill the heart of the true believer? John
15:4,5; Romans 6:6, 10, 11; Hebrews 12:2.

"This union with Christ, once formed, must be maintained. Christ said, 'Abide in
Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine;
no more can ye, except ye abide in Me.' This is no casual touch, no off-and-on con-
nection. The branch becomes a part of the living vine. The communication of life,
strength, and fruitfulness from the root to the branches is unobstructed and constant.
Separated from the vine, the branch cannot live. No more, said Jesus, can you live
apart from Me. The life you have received from Me can be preserved only by con-
tinual communion. Without Me you cannot overcome one sin, or resist one tempta-
tion."-The Desire of Ages, p. 676.

GROWTH IN GRACE November 18

7. What change occurs in the character? Galatians 5:22, 23.

"By beholding we are to become changed; and as we meditate upon the perfec-
tions of the divine Model, we shall desire to become wholly transformed, and renewed

-27-
in the image of His purity. It is by faith in the Son of God that transformation takes
place in the character, and the child of wrath becomes the child of God. He passes
from death unto life; he becomes spiritual and discerns spiritual things. The wisdom
of God enlightens his mind, and he beholds wondrous things out of His law. As a man is
converted by the truth, the work of transformation of character goes on. He has an in-
creased measure of understanding. In becoming a man of obedience to God, he has the
mind of Christ, and the will of God becomes his will. "-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 338.

8. Through God's grace, what wonderful goal will be reached in our lives?
Romans 8:29.

"Through the Holy Spirit, God's word is a light as it becomes a transforming

power in the life of the receiver. By implanting in their hearts the principles of His
word, the Holy Spirit develops in men the attributes of God. The light of His glory-
His character-is to shine forth in His followers."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 414.

THROUGH CHRIST, A LIVING CHANNEL November 19

9. What is the most pressing need of this dark world? Matthew 5:14-16.

"It is the privilege of every soul to be a living channel through which God can
communicate to the world the treasures of His grace, the unsearchable riches of
Christ. There is nothing that Christ desires so much as agents who will represent to
the world His Spirit and character. There is nothing that the world needs so much as
the manifestation through humanity of the Saviour's love. All heaven is waiting for
channels through which can be poured the holy oil to be a joy and blessing to human
hearts."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 419.

10. Who will be the Center of the believer's life every day? Galatians 2:20.

" 'Abiding in Christ is choosing only the disposition of Christ, so that His in-
terests are identified with yours. Abide in Him, to be and to do only what He wills.
These are the conditions of discipleship, and unless they are complied with, you can
never find rest. Rest is in Christ; it cannot be as something apart from Him.' "-Selected

AN ACHIEVABLE GOAL November 22

1. What is God's plan for His children? Matthew 5:48.

"The conditions of eternal life, under grace, are just what they were in Eden-
perfect righteousness, harmony with God, perfect conformity to the principles of His
law. The standard of character presented in the Old Testament is the same that is
presented in the New Testament. This standard is not one to which we cannot attain.
In every command or injunction that God gives there is a promise, the most positive,
underlying the command."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 76.
"He tells us to be perfect as He is, in the same manner. Weare to be centers of
light and blessing to our little circle, even as He is to the universe. We have nothing of
ourselves, but the light of His love shines upon us, and we are to reflect its brightness.
'In His borrowed goodness good,' we may be perfect in our sphere, even as God is
perfect in His."-Ibid., p. 77.

2. Why should we strive for perfection? 1 Corinthians 9:24, 25; Philippians

3:12-14.

THE WAY TO SALVATION November 23

3. What are the first steps toward salvation? Acts 2:37,38; Romans 5:1.

"Repentance includes sorrow for sin and a turning away from it. We shall not re-
nounce sin unless we see its sinfulness; until we turn away from it in heart, there will
be no real change in the life."-Steps to Christ, p. 23.
"Christ must be revealed to the sinner as the Saviour dying for the sins of the
world; and as we behold the Lamb of God upon the cross of Calvary, the mystery of

- 29-
redemption begins to unfold to our minds and the goodness of God leads us to repen-
tance. In dying for sinners, Christ manifested a love that is incomprehensible; and as
the sinner beholds this love, it softens the heart, impresses the mind, and inspires
contrition in the soul."-Ibid., pp. 26, 27.
"Christ has become our sacrifice and surety. He has become sin for us that we
might become the righteousness of God in Him. Through faith in His name He im-
putes unto us His righteousness, and it becomes a living principle in our life." - That I
May Know Him, p. 302.

4. For Christ's follower, what important truth is of supreme importance? He-

brews 12:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

"Through the merits of Christ, through His righteousness, which by faith is im-
puted unto us, we are to attain to the perfection of Christian character. Our daily and
hourly work is set forth in the words of the apostle: 'Looking unto Jesus the Author
and Finisher of our faith.' "-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 744.
"The Scriptures plainly show that the work of sanctification is progressive.
When in conversion the sinner finds peace with God through the blood of the atone-
ment, the Christian life has but just begun. Now he is to 'go on unto perfection;' to
grow up 'unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.' "- The Great Con-
troversy, p. 470.

PROGRESS IN SANCTIFICATION November 24

5. What steps are included in biblical sanctification? 2 Peter 1:5-10.

"Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in your
life. By yielding up your will to Christ, you ally yourself with the power that is above
all principalities and powers. You will have strength from above to hold you steadfast,
and thus through constant surrender to God you will be enabled to live the new life,
even the life of faith."-Steps to Christ, p. 48.

6. What is promised to those who thirst for righteousness? Isaiah 44:3; Ephe-
sians 3:16.

sure that they will be filled. The heart must be open to the Spirit's influence, or God's
blessing cannot be received."-Steps to Christ, p. 95.

I obey God rather than men? The decisive hour is even now at hand. Are our feet
planted on the rock of God's immutable word?"-The Great Controversy, pp. 593, 594.

9. What is the only way one can grow in the grace of Christ? Matthew 25:40;
Luke 9:60 (last part).

"God might have committed the message of the gospel, and all the work of lov-
ing ministry, to the heavenly angels. He might have employed other means for accom-
plishing His purpose. But in His infinite love He chose to make us coworkers with
Himself, with Christ and the angels, that we might share the blessing, the joy, the
spiritual uplifting, which results from this unselfish ministry."-Steps to Christ, p. 79.
"The only way to grow in grace is to be disinterestedly doing the very work
which Christ has enjoined upon us-to engage, to the extent of our ability, in helping
and blessing those who need the help we can give them."-Ibid., p. 80.

10. What should always be kept in mind? Matthew 24:42-44.

"There will be no future probation in which to prepare for eternity. It is in this

COWORKERS WITH THE LORD OF LORDS November 29

1. In accordance with what commission of our Master do we have authority to

work? What is the Lord's aim in this? Mark 16:15; Ecclesiastes 11:6.

" 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature' (Mark
16:15), is Christ's command to His followers. Not that all are called to be ministers or
missionaries in the ordinary sense of the term; but all may be workers with Him in
giving the 'glad tidings' to their fellowmen. To all, great or small, learned or ignorant,
old or young, the command is given."-Education, p. 264.

2. Who can have a special part in the closing work of the gospel? Ecclesiastes
12:1; 1 John 2:14.

"With such an army of workers as our youth, rightly trained, might furnish, how

all the creatures of our heavenly Father's care."-Steps to Christ, p. 77.

"Let us not be found sleeping on guard. Let no one say in his heart or by his

forth in earnest words of warning. Let us persuade men and women everywhere to re-

THE WHOLE WORLD IS TO BE LIGHTENED December 2

7. Describe Christ's methods in working to save souls. Luke 14:23.

"The last message of warning and mercy is to lighten the whole earth with its
glory. It is to reach all classes of men, rich and poor, high and low."-Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 228.
"In the command to go into the highways and hedges, Christ sets forth the work
of all whom He calls to minister in His name. The whole world is the field for Christ's
ministers. The whole human family is comprised in their congregation. The Lord
desires that His word of grace shall be brought home to every soul.
"To a great degree this must be accomplished by personal labor. This was
Christ's method. His work was largely made up of personal interviews. He had a
faithful regard for the one-soul audience. Through that one soul the message was
often extended to thousands."-Ibid., p. 229.

8. What does the Lord say to His church in the last days? Acts 2:17, 18.

"The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power
of God than marked its opening. The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpour-
ing of the former rain at the opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter
rain at its close."- The Great Controversy, pp. 611, 612.

CLIMAX OF THE WORK December 3

9. What is required before the promised latter rain may be received? Acts
3:19,20.

"Many have in a great measure failed to receive the former rain. They have not
obtained all the benefits that God has thus provided for them. They expect that the
lack will be supplied by the latter rain. When the richest abundance of grace shall be
bestowed, they intend to open their hearts to receive it. They are making a terrible
mistake.... The heart must be emptied of every defilement and cleansed for the in-
dwelling of the Spirit. It was by the confession and forsaking of sin, by earnest prayer
and consecration of themselves to God, that the early disciples prepared for the out-
pouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. The same work, only in greater
degree, must be done now."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 507.

10. Describe the effects of the latter rain. Joel 2:23, 24.

"The seed has been sown, and now it will spring up and bear fruit. The publica-
tions distributed by missionary workers have exerted their influence, yet many whose
minds were impressed have been prevented from fully comprehending the truth or
from yielding obedience. Now the rays of light penetrate everywhere, the truth is
seen in its clearness, and the honest children of God sever the bands which have held
them. Family connections, church relations, are powerless to stay them now. Truth is
more precious than all besides. Notwithstanding the agencies combined against the truth,
a large number take their stand upon the Lord's side."-The Great Controversy, p. 612.

WHY JESUS IS DELAYING

"The angels of God in their messages to men represent time as very short.
Thus it has always been presented to me. It is true that time has continued
longer than we expected in the early days of this message. Our Saviour did
not appear as soon as we hoped. But has the Word of the Lord failed? Never!

alike conditional."-Evangelism, p. 695.

GOD'S COMPASSION December 6

1. What is God's goal for every single one of us? 1 Timothy 2:3-6.

"God is long-suffering, not willing that any should perish; but His forbearance
has a limit, and when the boundary is past, there is no second probation. His wrath
will go forth and He will destroy without remedy."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.

2. Why couldn't the Lord permit the people of Israel to take direct possession
of the promised land? Hebrews 3:7-11.

"God did not design that His people, Israel, should wander forty years in the

them there a holy, healthy, happy people. But those to whom it was first preached,
went not in 'because of unbelief.' "-Evangelism, p. 696.

REASONS FOR THE DELAY December 7

3. In what danger are God's people today? Hebrews 3:12, 13.

"For forty years did unbelief, murmuring, and rebellion shut out ancient Israel
from the land of Canaan. The same sins have delayed the entrance of modern Israel
into the heavenly Canaan. In neither case were the promises of God at fault. It is the
unbelief, the worldliness, unconsecration, and strife among the Lord's professed people
that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years."-Evangelism, p. 696.

4. Why is the Lord delaying His coming? 2 Peter 3:9.

"The long night of gloom is trying, but the morning is deferred in mercy, because if

then He will come to claim them as His own."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 69.

6. What are the effects of a true knowledge of God? Acts 4:20.

"Zeal for the glory of God moved the disciples to bear witness to the truth with
mighty power. Should not this zeal fire our hearts with a longing to tell the story of
redeeming love, of Christ and Him crucified? Should not the power of God be even
more mightily revealed today than in the time of the apostles?"-Evangelism, p. 698.

the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ had entered to make atonement for His people.
The Sabbath reform was to be carried forward. The breach in the law of God must be

the Spirit is likened to the falling of the latter rain; and it is for this added power that

the soil of the heart must be broken up. Before they would seek healing from Jesus,
they must be awakened to their danger from the wounds of sin.
"God does not send messengers to flatter the sinner. He delivers no message of
peace to lull the unsanctified into fatal security. He lays heavy burdens upon the con-
science of the wrongdoer, and pierces the soul with arrows of conviction." - The Desire
of Ages, pp. 103, 104.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MOST HIGH December 15

5. What characterizes the message "in the spirit and power of Elias"? 1 Kings
18:17, 18,21.

"It was because Elijah was a man of large faith that God could use him in this
grave crisis in the history of Israel. ...
"Faith such as this is needed in the world today-faith that will lay hold on the
promises of God's word and refuse to let go until Heaven hears." -Prophets and Kings,
pp. 156, 157.

6. Who is proclaiming this message today? Revelation 12:17; 14:12; 1 Peter

2:9.

"John the Baptist went forth in the spirit and power of Elijah, to prepare the way
of the Lord, and to turn the people to the wisdom of the just. He was a representative

THE SAVING MESSAGE December 16

7. What important truth is to be clearly presented to the world? Revelation

14:6-11.

"In the closing work of God in the earth, the standard of His law will be again ex-
alted. False religion may prevail, iniquity may abound, the love of many may wax
cold.... But in the hour of greatest peril the God of Elijah will raise up human in-
strumentalities to bear a message that will not be silenced.... Earnestly will they
call upon men and women to turn from the observance of a man-made institution to
the observance of the true Sabbath."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 186, 187.

8. What should be made clear in every sermon? John 1:29.

"There are many who want to know what they must do to be saved. They want a
plain and clear explanation of the steps requisite in conversion, and there should not a
sermon be given unless a portion of that discourse is to especially make plain the way
that sinners may come to Christ and be saved. They should point them to Christ, as
did John, and with touching simplicity, their hearts aglow with the love of Christ, say,
'Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.' "-Selected Messages,
book 1, p. 157.

A VICTORIOUS END December 17

9. How will God's work on this earth be finished? Zechariah 4:6; Isaiah 28:21.

"Let me tell you that the Lord will work in this last work in a manner very much
out of the common order of things, and in a way that will be contrary to any human
planning.... God will use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is taking
the reins in His own hands."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 300.

10. What will the redeemed experience when their fight of faith is over? Revela-
tion 21:4; Isaiah 35:10.

"The days of pain and weeping are forever ended. The King of glory has wiped
the tears from all faces; every cause of grief has been removed. Amid the waving of
palm branches they pour forth a song of praise, clear, sweet, and harmonious; every
voice takes up the strain, until the anthem swells through the vaults of heaven: 'Salva-
tion to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.' And all the in-
habitants of heaven respond in the ascription: 'Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wis-
dom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever
and ever.' Revelation 7:10, 12."-The Great Controversy, pp. 650, 651.

will be more glorious than your brightest imagination can portray."-Steps to
Christ, p. 86.

of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him" (1
Corinthians 2:9).

WHAT GOD HAS PREPARED December 20

1. In spite of suffering and problems, what hope makes us look confidently up-
ward? 2 Peter 3:13.

"Language is altogether too feeble to attempt a description of heaven. As the

scene rises before me, I am lost in amazement. Carried away with the surpassing
splendor and excellent glory, I lay down the pen, and exclaim, 'Oh, what love! what
wondrous love!' The most exalted language fails to describe the glory of heaven or
the matchless depths of a Saviour's love."-Early Writings, p. 289.

2. What is said of the believers' future home? 1 Corinthians 2:9.

"Human language is inadequate to describe the reward of the righteous. It will

be known only to those who behold it. No finite mind can comprehend the glory of the
Paradise of God."-The Story of Redemption, pp. 430, 431.

tion 21:3,4; 22:1-5.

"There are ever-flowing streams, clear as crystal, and beside them waving trees
cast their shadows upon the paths prepared for the ransomed of the Lord. There the
wide-spreading plains swell into hills of beauty, and the mountains of God rear their
lofty summits. On those peaceful plains, beside those living streams, God's people, so
long pilgrims and wanderers, shall find a home."- The Great Controversy, p. 675.

4. What condition will be restored on the new earth? Isaiah 35:5-10; 65:25.

"Then we entered a field full of all kinds of beasts-the lion, the lamb, the leopard,
and the wolf, all together in perfect union. We passed through the midst of them, and they
followed on peaceably after."-Early Writings, p. 18.
"There shall be nothing to 'hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, saith the
Lord.' Isaiah 65:25. There man will be restored to his lost kingship, and the lower
order of beings will again recognize his sway; the fierce will become gentle, and the
timid trustful."-Education, p. 304.

THE LORD, OUR KING December 22

5. Who is privileged to be a citizen of God's kingdom? Revelation 2:7; 3:5, 21;

21:7.

"John saw the mercy, the tenderness, and the love of God blending with His holi-
ness, justice, and power. He saw sinners finding a Father in Him of whom their sins
had made them afraid. And looking beyond the culmination of the great conflict, he
beheld upon Zion 'them that had gotten the victory ... stand on the sea of glass, hav-
ing the harps of God,' and singing 'the song of Moses' and the Lamb. Revelation 15:2,
3."-The Acts of the Apostles, p. 589.

6. Around whom will everything center for all eternity? Revelation 7:15-17.

"The years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious
revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence,
and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admira-
tion of His character."- The Great Controversy, p. 678.

ETERNAL HAPPINESS December 23

7. How will the redeemed express their gratitude and love? Revelation 5:12.

"As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption and the amazing achieve-
ments in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with
more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and
ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell
the mighty chorus of praise." - The Great Controversy, p. 678.

8. What will be the privilege of the Holy City's inhabitants? Revelation 22:5;
Isaiah 65:19.

"In the City of God 'there shall be no night.' None will need or desire repose.
There will be no weariness in doing the will of God and offering praise to His name.
We shall ever feel the freshness of the morning and shall ever be far from its close.
. . . The light of the sun will be superseded by a radiance which is not painfully dazzl-
ing, yet which immeasurably surpasses the brightness of our noontide. The glory of
God and the Lamb floods the Holy City with unfading light. The redeemed walk in
the sunless glory of perpetual day."-The Great Controversy, p. 676.

One. "-Education, p. 301.

With unutterable delight we shall enter into the joy and the wisdom of unfallen be-
ings. We shall share the treasures gained through ages upon ages spent in contempla-
tion of God's handiwork."-Ibid., p. 307.
10. What will be the delight of the redeemed for all eternity? Revelation 5:13.

"[Revelation 5:13 quoted.] The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no
more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through
the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, through-
out the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all
things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that
God is love."-The Great Controversy, p. 678.
