Microeconomic/econometric consultant for the Poverty and Equity Global Practice

Summary
Recruitment type: Local
Grade: TBD
Term: 1 year (150 days) with a probationary period of 1 month (20 days). The position is eligible
for extension, depending on performance.
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Closing date: 7th October 2018

Background
The Poverty and Equity Global Practice (POV GP) is a family of versatile empirical micro-
economists with deep expertise in household surveys and poverty measurement, and broad
experience in using household and other microdata to inform the design and implementation of
policies and programs to reduce poverty and enhance shared prosperity. The POV GP works with
government and external partners in ensuring that their efforts to eliminate extreme poverty and
promote shared prosperity are enhanced by integrative empirically-grounded analyses of
household welfare. Internally, the POV GP works with country, regional and global teams across
all practices to operationalize the twin goals of the WBG—to reduce poverty and enhance shared
prosperity—by providing a more robust evidence base and analytics using micro data.

Description
The World Bank POV GP team in Bangladesh is looking for a versatile and high-performing
microeconomist to support the econometric work being done and taking on special assignments
as and when needed. The consultant should have interest in analytical development work, solid
economic/econometric training and sophisticated skills in STATA. S/he will be able to work
within a team with minimal supervision and oversight. The individual should have the
demonstrated capacity to write academic papers derived from the data. Previous experience with
conducting primary data collection exercises and working with national microdata sets such as
the Household Income and Expenditure Survey is highly desirable.

Duties
• Provide econometric backup to POV Economist
• Write-up results derived from the analysis for dissemination
• Take a leading role in working with outsourced data collection agencies to ensure quality
and adherence to the design
• Additional tasks as and when they are assigned
Selection criteria
• At least a Masters degree with a strong focus on applied microeconometrics from a
reputed national or international institute and two to three years of experience in a related
field
• Expertise in STATA
• Knowledge on development issues surrounding Bangladesh
• Excellent oral and written English skills
• Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and perform under pressure
• Desire to pursue higher degrees in the fields of development research
