Education of sustainability develops knowledge, skills and values, which can be

implemented throughout a student’s education journey. Adhering to the second concept of

sustainability, this program will allow students to visualise a diverse world view on

ecosystems and discuss and recognise any individual and community actions for

sustainability. By implementing bush survival skills into your learning program, you will be

teaching your students about one of the critical aspects of sustaining life, this being shelter.

The other two needs for sustaining life are food and water. Teaching students about the

uses of natural materials and how these materials are used in day to day living, will give

them an understanding of the requirements to maintain a sustainable pattern of living to

allow the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life.

To implement this program within the classroom, the teacher would need to allow six to

seven lessons, to ensure maximum participation and creative flare. Ensuring that the

program is hands on and considers all learning capabilities is a must as well. By allowing

students to find, touch and feel the elements required to survive in the bush, the idea is that

there will be an appreciation for the land and a higher level of thinking will occur when it

comes to sustainability topics.
