The Making Of

Introduction
Invisible Cities
In this project we had to create concept art for Italo Calvino,
Invisible cities. It was his most popular work that was released
1972. He is a journalist and a writer, the novel describes
numerous imaginary cities. That each have a unique trait or
even unusual architecture. Each city is named after a women
and the cities are separated within the sections of Cities &
Signs or Cities & Eyes etc.

We were tasked with creating thumbnails for each city, and

later choose single city for the project. I was most drawn
towards Moriana or also known as Cities & Eyes. I was drawn
to the city because of its deceitful nature. And somewhat of a
mysterious location, my aim to create a mood that’s the
broken down side of the city and illusion that everyone sees.
Chosen City
MORIANA
Influence Because Moriana is a sea side town, I researched the
sea life and the transport of the city. I was most drawn
to sea life and somewhat of tropical location. Because
of the abundance of sea coral and the creatures that
dwell within the sea. I also looked at Greek columns
choosing the Doric order which is known for being
the most simplistic of all the Greek styles.

Also looking at the Greek key that was used to bring luck
and good fortune, to who ever wore it. The key origins
are from a Greek story the Minotaur and the labyrinth.
For the colours I choose warm colours like brown and
yellow to create a sense that the city is welcoming in
nature. The purple was to create more of darker and
mysterious side of the city.
