A zipper, zip, fly, or zip fastener, formerly known as a clasp locker, is a commonly used
device for binding the edges of an opening of fabric or other flexible material, such as on a
garment or a bag. It is used in clothing (e.g., jackets and jeans), luggage and other
bags, sporting goods, camping gear (e.g. tents and sleeping bags), and other items. Zippers
come in all different sizes, shapes, and colours. Whitcomb L. Judson was an American
inventor from Chicago who invented and constructed a workable zipper. The method, still in
use today, is based on interlocking teeth. Initially, it was titled the “hookless fastener” and
was later redesigned to become more reliable.
Zippers with common teeth variations: metal teeth (top), coil teeth and plastic teeth.
Types of zippers:
1. Coil zipper: also known as nylon coil zipper—is a type of zipper whose
teeth/elements are made from coiled monofilament that is traditionally nylon. The coil
is sewn to a zipper tape to make the final product. The final zipper product is
completed when the nylon coiled teeth are sewn onto the zipper tape. Nylon coil
zippers have a continuous coil chain made from nylon. When this coil is positioned on
the back of the zipper and not in the front, this kind of zipper is called invisible
zipper.
Applications:
3. Reverse coil zippers: are a variation of the coil zipper. In a reverse coil zipper, the
coil is on the reverse (back) side of the zipper and the slider works on the flat side of
the zipper (normally the back, now the front). Unlike an invisible zipper where the
coil is also on the back, the reverse coil shows stitching on the front side and the slider
accommodates a variety of pulls (the invisible zipper requires a small, tear-drop pull
due to the small slider attachment). Water resistant zippers are generally configured as
reverse coil so that the PVC coating can cover the stitching. A rubber or PVC coated
reverse zipper is called a waterproof zipper.
Applications: This type of pre-formed metal zippers is mainly used in high grade
jeans-wear, work-wear, etc.
5. Plastic-molded zippers: are identical to metallic zippers, except that the teeth are
plastic instead of metal. Metal
zippers can be painted to match
the surrounding fabric; plastic
zippers can be made in any
colour of plastic. Plastic zippers
mostly use polyacetal resin,
though other thermoplastic
polymers are used as well, such
as polyethylene.
Applications: Used most
popularly for pencil cases, small
plastic pouches and other useful
stationery.
6. Magnetic zippers: allow for one-handed closure and are used in sportswear.
Magnetic base allows for easy starting or single handed use. Minimum dexterity
required to close the zipper. Zipper base holds together and meets all industry
standards. Easy and natural feel when unzipping.
RIVETS:
Rivet is a metal part with pin. It is a permanent
mechanical fastener. They are not used to open or
close the opening parts of garments. They are used
for following purposes:
Types of rivets:
1. Silver Rivets: These are used in making jewellery and other accessories in garments
3. Jeans Rivets: A metal accessory that is used to reinforce stress points and serve as
non-functional ornamentation. They were introduced by Nevada-based tailor Jacob
Davis, who borrowed the technique from horse blankets.
4. Rivet Buttons: A snap fastener (also called press stud, popper, snap or tich) is a pair
of interlocking discs, made out of a metal or plastic, commonly used in place of
buttons to fasten clothing and for similar purposes.
WASHCARE LABEL:
A laundry symbol, also called a care symbol, is a pictogram which represents a method of
washing, for example drying, dry-cleaning and
ironing clothing. Such symbols are written on labels,
known as care labels or care tags, attached to clothing
to indicate how a item should be best cleaned.
Types of wash care label:

ELASTIC
It is a narrow fabric that stretches due to its composition. Rubber or spandex cores are
wrapped in a fibre such as polyester, nylon or cotton and then woven, knitted or braided to
create the elastic. There are different types so it’s important to use the right elastic on your
project, for comfort, garment life and ease of sewing.
TYPES OF ELASTIC
1. BRAIDED ELASTIC
Braided elastic is probably what most of us think of when picturing elastic. It has parallel ribs
going along the length of the elastic and it narrows when stretched. It also looses its stretch
when pierced with a needle, so it’s not the best choice for sewing through. Braided elastic is
commonly used inside casings, such as the necklines shown in the dresses at the top of this
post, or in sleeve hems.
2. KNIT ELASTIC
Knit elastic is a good choice for a lot of garments. It’s soft against the skin, doesn’t narrow
when stretched and you can sew through it with without weakening or distorting the elastic.
Knit elastics are suitable for light to mid-weight fabrics.
Knit elastic can be applied directly to the fabric as shown above or can be used in a casing as
well. Knit elastic is a great choice for pyjama pants or other applications where the elastic
touches the body.
See our post on how to sew an elastic waistband sewing to see how you can prevent twist
using knit elastic.
3. WOVEN ELASTIC
Woven elastic is stronger than the other elastics previously mentioned and can be used on
mid- to heavy-weight fabrics. Woven elastic has the distinctive vertical and horizontal ribs
and is often labelled as “no-roll” elastic. It makes a great choice for casings in garments,
home dec items, bags and outerwear. It doesn’t narrow when stretched and can be sewn
through without weakening the elastic.
4. FOLDOVER ELASTIC
Fold-over elastic (commonly called FOE) is a great way to finish edges on stretch fabrics or
garments where you want a smooth close fit that still retains the stretch. It is a great choice
for underwear or athletic apparel, or even any clothing using knit fabrics. It is plush on one
side and smooth or possibly a print on the other so you can choose which side goes on the
outside. It comes in a lot of colours and patterns, although some of the patterned FOE’s can
be a bit scratchy against the skin — such as the metallic one shown above — so be
careful where and what type of garment to use those on.
It does take several steps but FOE is robust, doesn’t narrow when stretched and can be used
on anything from swimwear to baby diapers.
5. LINGERIE ELASTIC
Elastic for lingerie is a subcategory in the elastic world. Most commonly knit elastic, it comes
in a lot of different colours and textures and is designed for bras, undies and lingerie.
This elastic can have a decorative edge, possibly scalloped or with a picot trim and elevates
your creation from plain to pretty. Many of these elastics have a plush side for comfort
against the skin. If you’re feeling creative, you could use them as a design element on the
outside of a garment.
There are lots of other types of elastic as well, such as clear elastic, swimwear elastic, baby
elastic, buttonhole elastic and even elastic thread!
Elastic:
Elastic (Elastic band) is a longitudinal elastic elongation property flat with narrow pieces of
fabric, also known as wide-tight elastic band. English name translation elastic: elastic band. It

and wear fabrics and can be dried in medium to high tempt. It is perfect for the natural fibre
lover.
Knitted elastic is soft, strong and appropriate for most apparel items. because its light weight.
Woven elastic is very stron and usually thicker than other elastics. Its used on heavy weight
fabrics, including home decorating fabric, car covers, bags etc.
Waistband Elastics:
When applying elastic in a casing, preshrink it before measuring. If elastic is stitched on, it
does not require preshrinking.
No-Roll or Non-Roll:
An elastic that does not roll or twist. It is a woven elastic with lateral ribs. Use it in casings.
Knit Non-Roll:

smocking and other decorative stitching. Wind bobbin with elastic thread using the bobbin
