ABSTRACT
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a sudden, unexpected death caused by loss of heart
function (sudden cardiac arrest). The medical record of Local General Hospital of
Karanganyar shows that in the period of January up to October 2014, there were
127 patients of cardiac arrest with resuscitation intervention of 30 chest
compressions and two ventilations as many as 5 cycles inhibited by the lack of
health workers and facilities. The objective of the research is to investigate the
nurses’ experience in the cardiac arrest management at the Emergency Installation
of Local General Hospital of Karanganyar. The research used the
phenomenological qualitative method. The samples of research were 3
participants. They were taken by using the purposive sampling technique. The
data were collected through in-depth interview and analyzed by using the
Colaizzi’s method. The result of the research shows that there were several
themes namely: (1) knowledge: (a) definition of cardiac arrest, (b) cause of
cardiac arrest, (c) signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest, and (d) action of cardiac
arrest; (2) nurses ‘s intervention : (a) initial assessment of cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, (b) cardiopulmonary resuscitation intervention, (c) evaluation of
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, (d) recovery position, (e) factors of the stop of
cardiopulmonary resuscitation , (f) administration of emergency drugs; (3)
supporting factors: (a) nurses’ knowledge (b) supporting facilities, (c) nurses’
preparedness ; and (4) inhibiting factors: (a) facilities and infrastructure
constraints, (b) patient factors, (c) family factors. Thus, the nurses’ experience in
the cardiac arrest was supported by the nurses’ knowledge and readiness but was
inhibited by the lack of facilities and infrastructures.
