Lesson Idea Name: The Unknown Number

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE3.OA.4 Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating
three whole numbers using the inverse relationship of multiplication and division. For example,
determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations, 8 × ? = 48, 5 = □
÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.

Technology Standard Addressed: Kahoot!

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot will motivate and create interest in the topic for learning math material in different and new
exciting ways. Kahoot will also help me, the teacher become more aware of students who are struggling
with this topic. Therefore, I can provide support and understanding.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
I will start the lesson by reviewing the homework from the night before. The homework was based on
determining the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation. After we review the
homework, I will ask students to get out their iPad’s or other technology devices they may have brought from
home. I will introduce the activity by telling them we will be playing a review game over the lesson we have
just completed so the students know what type of questions they should know.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:
The students will type in the game pin Kahoot gives. I will then put the game on my interactive whiteboard
screen for the students to be able to see and read the questions. The only materials needed are an iPad
(other device) and the whiteboard screen. The activity will only last a few minutes due to it being a quick
review!
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will pre-select correct answers to all of the questions and display the correct response to the class after we
finish playing Kahoot. This is so the students are aware of the correct answer and we can review it after the
game is over as a class.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity I will look at the total amount correct and incorrect. From there, I will know what I need to
review more on and what the students know. I will then go over problems students struggled with.

How will the data be used?

The top 5 students will get an extra 5 points on their math test. This will make the class as a whole interact
and try. I will save this data just in case I need it to share with students or parents. This data will only be for
me or specific struggling students to see.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Kahoot promotes student learning by keeping them engaged and interactive. I hope to learn if what I am
covering and teaching is being processed and if not, I hope to learn what the students are not
understanding so I can go into further depth on this specific topic.
Reflective Practice:
To further extend this lesson, I will introduce the next unit of study through Kahoot to see what the
students know at the beginning. I will then use the same Kahoot at the end of the next unit of study to see
if the students scores have improved after I teach this unit.
