Lesson: Beothuk, Potlach, and Cultural Contact Time: 55 Minutes
SLOs:

10-1, 2.1: recognize and appreciate historical and contemporary consequences of European
contact, historical globalization and imperialism on Aboriginal societies (TCC, CC, I, GC)

10-1, 2.6: examine impacts of cultural contact between Indigenous and non-Indigenous
peoples (exchange of goods and technologies, depopulation, influences on government and
social institutions) (TCC, CC, GC)

Instructional Objectives:

Skill:
Students will...
1. Participate in a debate in which students will discuss the lawfulness of the settler actions
in Newfoundland
2. Participate in an oral history retelling activity designed to illustrate how difficult it is to
retain tradition under the best of conditions

Key Questions: To what extent should contemporary society respond to the legacies of
historical globalization?

What is cultural contact?


Who were the Beothuk people? What happened to them?
What is depopulation? Why did it occur?
What are some consequences of depopulation?
What are the consequences of losing our oral histories

Materials:

Chromebook cart, Presentation notes (power-point?), Historical Notes

Preparation/Safety:
Write schedule up on the board. Prepare Power Point Presentation and notes before class,
have loaded onto computer and ready to go out of the gate.
