(a) Determine the discharge. (Q=3530 cfs)
(b) If the channel is to flow into a box culvert
(RCB) with an entrance loss coefficient
of 0.7, determine the minimum width of
the box culvert if there is to be no choke.

(c) If site conditions required that the RCB
be limited in width to 25 feet, determine
the drop needed at the culvert inlet for a drop
choke to be avoided. This is called
dropped inlet. The drop is z2-z1. (drop =
2.29 ft)
(d) If the drop were not installed, determine the depth at Section 1 in the trapezoidal
channel for the 25-ft wide RCB at Section 2. Also determine the rise in water surface
elevation at Section 1. Assume z2 = z1. (y1 = 15.47 ft, rise = 2.47 ft)

Problem 2 Water flows in a trapezoidal channel with a 20-ft base width and 2.5 to 1 side
slopes (horizontal to vertical). The water flows at a uniform depth of 12 feet.
a) If n = 0.020 and the bed slope is 0.0004, determine the discharge. (3300 cfs)
b) The channel passes under a road through a reinforced box culvert RCB with a
height of 9 ft. Determine the minimum width of the RCB that will not create
upstream flooding. The entrance loss coefficient is 0.5. (30.6 ft)
c) If a 24 ft wide RCB is used rather than the one you designed in Step (b) it will have
two cells and is called a 2x12’x9’ RCB. Determine the depths of flow at Sections 1
and 2 where Section 1 is the approach section just upstream from the RCB and
Section 2 is the culvert entrance section.
(y2 = 8.36 ft, y1 = 14.37 ft)
d) The situation in Step c creates a choke and an M1 gradually varied flow profile
upstream from the culvert. Use the Step Method by hand with two steps to plot the
profile upstream using delta y values of 1-ft. Thus the depths you use are 14.37,
13.37 and 12.37 ft. (x = 0, -4975, -13636)
e) Use the Step Method with EXCEL program using 10 steps to plot the profile
upstream to a location where the depth is 2 percent above the uniform flow depth
of 12 ft – thus to y = 12.24 ft. What is the distance from the lake to the point where
y = 12.24 ft? (17,364 ft)
f) Use the Step Method with EXCEL program using 10 steps to find the depth 1 mile
(5280 ft) upstream from the lake. (y = 13.33 ft at x = - 5280 ft)
