The sun gives out ultraviolet (UV) radiation rays are divided
into three categories based on their wavelength.
While shorter wavelength are the most damaging to skin, UVC rays are absorbed
by the ozone layer and never reach the earth. Therefore, UVA and UVB rays with
longer-wavelength have the potential to cause the most harm to skin
UVA activates the melanin stored in the epidermis, and produces a pigmentation
effect visible within one hour but usually fades in 24 hours. UVA penetrates
deeper into dermis, where connective tissue, blood vessels and collagen exist.
The result is a loss of elasticity that causes the skin to sag, wrinkle, and age
prematurely. In a study done by Australian researchers in March 2004 found that
UVA rays can lead to cellular changes where this layer of cells that is responsible
in the regeneration of skin cells and it is feared that damage to the DNA of these
cells may increase a person's risk of developing skin cancer.
UVB penetration primarily remains at the epidermis level and is the main cause
of skin cancer. However a large dose of UVB radiation will cause acute sunburn,
redness and burning sensation. UVB rays stimulate the formulation of melanin,
causing a significant pigmentation of the skin. This darkening effect will be
evident after approximately 24 hours and is relatively long-lasting
Types of UV rays protection in skin care
Regardless of skin type and ethnicity, everyone needs to use a sunscreen. The
benefits of using sunscreen when heading outdoors are well established. It
protects the skin from over exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, prevention
of prematurely aging skin and defense against future skin cancer.
