1. Com pute the design factored shear-force envelope.

Distributed service live load: wl  24

Point Live Load: Pl  60 kN
kN
Distributed factored load: wu  1.2  wd  1.6  wl wu  62.4

Factored point live load: Plu  1.6  Pl Plu  96 kN

Span: L  10 m
Factored shear force diagram :

Factored shear force diagram

Vu( 0.610)

500
0 5 10
x
Vu( 0 )  360

Vu( 5 )  48 kN
Since the beam loaded on top flange and supported on the bottom flange, the
critical section is located at d=610 mm from the support.
Vu( 0.610)  321.936 kN

2. Are stirrups are required by Code, No stirrup are requred if Vn=Vu/ <=Vc/2

fc  25 bw  300 d  610 mm

  0.75
5
Vc  0.17 fc bw d Vc  1.556  10 N

Vc
Vc  Vc  155.55 kN
1000

Vu( 0.61)
 429.248

Vc
 77.775 kN
2

Because Vu/ > Vc/2, stirrups are required.

3. Is the cross section large enough ?, the Code gives the m aximum shear in the stirrup as

Vsmax  0.66  fc bw d

5
Vsmax  6.039  10 N

Vsmax
Vsmax  Vsmax  603.9 kN
1000

Thus m aximum allowable Vn is

Vnmax  Vc  Vsmax Vnmax  759.45 Kn
  0.75
Vu( 0.610)
Vnatd  Vnatd  429.248 kN

Becouse Vnatd=429.248 kN is less than Vnmax=759.45 kN, the section is big

enough.

4. Check anchorage of stirrups and m aximum spacing. Try D10 double-stirrups,

fy  300 MPa
2
  ( 10) 2
Av  2  Av  157.08 mm
4
(a) Check the anchorage of the stirrupss. ACI Sect ion 12.13.2.1 allows N o. 25M and
sm aller stirrups to be anchorage by standard 90 dgree or 135 degree stirrup hook arround
a longitudinal bar. Provide a D10 or larger bar in eac h of the upper corners of the stirrup
to anchor them.

(b) Find the m aximum stirrups spacing

Based on the beam depth: Code section 11.5.4.1 requires the smaller of 0.5d =305 mm
or 600 m m. Code section 11.5.4.3 requires half these spacing if Vs exceeds

5
Vslim  0.33 fc bw d Vslim  3.02  10

Vslim
Vslim  Vslim  301.95 kN
1000

Becouse the maxim um Vs is less than Vslim =301.95 kN, the m aximum spacing is 305
m m.

Based on minimum allowed Av,

bw s
Avmin  0.062 fc
fy
bw s
but not less than Avmin  0.35
fy

Rearrngeing gives
16 Av fy
smax  smax  502.655 mm
fc bw
but not less than
3  Av fy
smax  smax  471.239mm
bw
Therefore, the m aximum spacing based on the beam depth governs. m aximum s =305
m m.
5. Com pute the stirrup spacing required to resist the shear force, for vertical stirrups,

Vu( 0.610)  321.936kN

Vc  155.55 Kn
Av fy d
s  s  105.027 mm
Vu( 0.610)  1000
 Vc 1000

Try D10 mm U stirrups at s= 100 mm . Change spacing to s=150 mm where t his
acceptable, and then go to the maxim um spacing of 300 mm .

Compute Vu/phi, where s can be increase to 150 m m,

s  150 mm
