3. VarioGuide definitions and specifications
3.1 Definitions
3.1.1 GNSS and correction signal
GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is a global navigation satellite system designed for position
determination and navigation using satellite signals and signals received from pseudolites (terrestrial
transmitters which emit signals like those of a satellite).
Data for position determination is currently supplied by North America's NAVSTAR GPS and Russia's
GLONASS system. Galileo, the European satellite navigation system, is currently under development.
VarioGuide processes both GPS and GLONASS signals and is designed to operate with future systems.
GNSS satellites communicate their exact position and time via radio. For position determination a receiver
has to be supplied with signals from at least four satellites simultaneously. The four signal propagation
times (from the satellites to the receiving aerial) are then calculated in the receiving device. This is used to
determine the current position.
Stationary receiving stations improve positional accuracy by transmitting correction signals (DGPS) to
users:
• with geostationary satellites such as Europe's EGNOS, North America's WAAS and OmniSTAR
(VarioGuide functions with VBS and HP).
• terrestrially with a base station or RTK network.

• VarioGuide may lose the connection to certain
satellites, including the correction signal
satellite, if the vehicle is operated on slopes,
causing the satellite to be out of the aerial's
reception range.
Fig. 4
• VarioGuide steers the tractor, NOT the
implement.
• If the implement does not run concentrically to
the tractor because it is being pulled downhill,
for example, deviations in accuracy may occur.
Fig. 5
• The wave angle and thus reception of the
correction signal decreases as the vehicle
moves further north.
• Hilly terrain causes reception of satellite signals
to deteriorate.
• The GNSS system does not offer uniform
availability around the clock and for every
location.

Satellite drift
A certain amount of drift occurs on satellite-based navigation systems. The accuracy is therefore defined
statistically and specified as a percentage of the operational period.
• Static accuracy: Measured position of the stationary tractor over 1–3 days. The average value
determined states how close the measured value comes to the actual position.
• Dynamic accuracy: Pass-to-pass accuracy from way line to way line, which must be achieved when
crossing the field within 15 minutes. If a longer period of time passes between two passes, a certain
amount of drift will be noticeable.
Operating conditions
Ideal for satellite signal reception:
• The tractor is located on level ground or the base station is perfectly horizontal.
• Signal reception is not obstructed.
3.1.7 Restrictions
• Potential loss of GNSS signal due to obstructions near copses, trees and buildings.
• Potential loss of correction signal due to obstructions near copses, trees and buildings.
• Electromagnetic interference, e.g. from overhead lines.

3. VarioGuide definitions and specifications
• Number of receivable satellites restricted by the inclined position of the tractor on the terrain.
• The system will not be able to work in regions where the OmniSTAR satellite is too close to the
horizon. This also applies for heavily undulating terrain, particularly in the case of (Northern) slopes,
possibly combined with other obstacles.
• Use at higher latitudes (here it is better to set the waypoints on a North/South rather than on an East/
West axis).
• Reduced accuracy is also possible on slopes and on implements with a strong side pull.
• Reduced accuracy is possible where the load on the tractor's front axle is too high or too low.
• Reduced accuracy is possible with greasy, sandy or very uneven ground conditions.
• The range of the base station depends on the nature of the terrain and on the weather. Accuracy
decreases as the distance increases.
• The tractor is too far away from the base station.
• After an interruption in the power supply to the base station, there may be shifts in track after
restarting. It is possible to make a manual correction on the terminal.

9.1 Glossary
9.1.1 Glossary
Designation Description
Activated status The status in which automatic steering is switched on and controls the
steering movements of the tractor. The status display is green when automatic
steering is in activated status.
Pass-to-pass accuracy The relative accuracy from one wayline to the next, which is carried out within
15 minutes on consecutive runs. Can be two to five times more accurate than
static accuracy.
Aerial offset The distance between the aerial and the middle of the tractor.
Base station A GNSS receiver that supplies differential corrections to receivers equipped
with GNSS. Also called a base or a reference station.
Latitude The distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees. One minute
of latitude equates to one nautical mile (1852 m (6076 ft)). The equator has a
latitude of zero.
Circular Error Probability A static measurement of the horizontal accuracy measuring the radius of a
(CEP) circle, in relation to the center point of the actual position within which the
position solutions lie. A CEP measurement of 50% shows that half of the
measured position solutions lie within the radius of accuracy.
Controlled Traffic A method of agriculture that uses permanent tram lines and beds for all
Farming (CTF) agricultural applications. All implements must have the same width or a
multiple thereof.
Decimetre accuracy Accuracy of up to +/- 5 centimeters, ensured by DGPS options such as RT20.
(DM)
Differential GPS (DGPS) A method that uses correction data from satellite services or fixed reference
stations to increase GPS accuracy. The satellites or local reference stations
send correction data to vehicles equipped with GNSS receivers.
Differential YAW (DYAW) The relative speed, measured in degrees per second, at which the center point
of the measurement moves from its intended direction along the horizontal
plane.
Dilution of Precision A measurement of the proportion of the satellite geometry with respect to the
(DOP) inaccuracy of the position determination.
Dual frequency Instrumentation with the capability of carrying out measurements on both L
bands. As a result, changes in carrier range or ionospheric adjustments can be
carried out in real time. A dual-frequency GNSS receiver is more accurate than
a single-frequency GNSS receiver, which can only use the first L band.

Designation Description
Accuracy The level of concordance between the measured and the actual position.
Geometric Dilution of The dilution of precision, which is associated with the geometric effects of the
Precision (GDOP) satellite position.
Geostationary orbit A constant, fixed position above a certain reference point on the surface of the
earth.
Yaw The change in direction observed when the steering wheel is moved.
Smoothing Adapts the contour guide if sharp bends occur on waylines determined from
the original track.
GLONASS Satellite navigation system operated by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian
Federation.
GNSS Global Navigation Satellite System. System for position determination and
navigation on land and in the air using satellite signals and signals received
from pseudolites.
GPRS General Packet Radio Service. Packet-oriented service for transmission of data
in GSM and UMTS networks.
GSM Global System for Mobile Communications. Standard for all-digital mobile
communications networks. Mainly designed for telephony, but also for packet-
oriented data transmission and short messages.
Ionospheric error The ionosphere is a layer of charged particles over the surface of the earth. An
ionospheric error is an error that is caused by the attenuation of GNSS signals
as they pass through the ionosphere. Ionospheric errors are at their highest
during the day and at their lowest during the night.
IMU Inertial Measurement Unit: Provides information about the yaw and roll of the
vehicle.
Map view A graphic display on the terminal, which shows the position of the tractor, the
target wayline, way line distance, correction signal info, steering status, area
marker, marker, obstacles and boundaries.
Convergence time The convergence time is the time required by the software to determine the
position of the tractor after the system is switched on.

position to the server via mobile radio. The server uses the position data from
the base stations and vehicles to calculate the correction data for each vehicle
and transmits it to the vehicle via mobile radio. This allows position
determination to be carried out with an accuracy of 1-2 cm in real time.
Signal lag The age of the correction measurement values or the time between the
recording and when the measurements are used.
SLOP A measurement that specifies how close the estimated GNSS position is to
the actual position.
Space Vehicle ID (SVID) The unique identification number allocated to the respective GNSS satellite.
Cross track (Xtrack) The right-angled distance between the current tractor position and the wayline.
Wayline offset The offset of the way line parallel to the original wayline. This is calculated
relative to the waypoints set.
Wayline offset The offset at right angles to the wayline, which shifts the position of the GNSS
aerial relative to the way line; this depends on the direction of travel and may
be set to the right or left.
Standard Positioning A positioning service provided by the US Department of Defense for all civilian
Service (SPS) GPS users worldwide. This service typically uses the "Coarse Acquisition
Code".
Heading The angle of the tractor relative to the way line (measured in degrees).
Sub-meter accuracy (SM) Accuracy of up to +/- 20 centimeters, ensured by DGPS options such as
OmniSTAR VBS or WAAS.
Triangulation The trigonometric method of determining the position of a fixed point used
two or more fixed points and the distance between them.
Overlap The area of the field that is processed more than once during operation.
Equipment for automatic Consists of the components mounted on the tractor for operating the
steering automatic steering: Steering angle sensors, hydraulic hoses, valve blocks and
brackets.

Designation Description
Roll When one side of the tractor lifts or lowers relative to the other side due to
changes in the terrain.
Waypoint One of the two reference points in the field used to define a virtual straight
line: the wayline.
Xtrack The right-angled distance between the current tractor position and the wayline
(cross track).
Centimeter accuracy Accuracy of up to +/- 2 centimeters, ensured by DGPS options such as RT2.
