TURBO-MACHINARY
ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
______________________________________________________________________________
1) Compare turbo-machine and positive displacement machines.
2) Derive an expression for maximum efficiency for an impulse turbine in terms of blade speed
ratio.
3) Describe pressure-velocity compounding an impulse turbine and write its advantages.
4) Derive an expression for maximum efficiency for a reaction turbine in terms of blade speed
ratio.
5) Explain the Reheat factor for the steam turbine with neat sketch.
6) In a single stage steam turbine nozzle angle is 20& blade angles are equal. The velocity
coefficient for blades is .85 Find the maximum blade efficiency possible. If the actual blade
efficiency is 92% of the maximum blade efficiency. Calculate the possible blade speed ratio.
7) Draw the velocity triangles. Write the equation of work done for the following:
a) Impulse Steam turbine b) Parson’s turbine
8) Dry saturated steam at 10 atm. pressure is supplied to a single rotor impulse wheel, the
condenser pressure being 0.5 atm. The nozzle angle at the rotor is 180 to the wheel plane. The
rotor blades which move at a speed of 450 m/s are equiangular. If the coefficient of velocity for
the rotor blade is 0.92. Determine
a) The specific power output c) Stage efficiency
b) Rotor efficiency d) Axial thrust
9) Draw the velocity diagram for a stage in impulse turbine with 2 rings of moving blades for
friction loss of 10 % of relative velocity on fixed & moving blades both. Find the blade velocity
for nozzle steam exit velocity of 500 m/s & the diagram efficiency of the stage.
Nozzle angle 15 Fixed blade discharge angle = 20
Moving blade tip discharge angle = 30 Final discharge is axial.
10) In an impulse turbine, the steam issues from nozzle with speed of 600 m/s and blade speed is
120 m/s. The velocity is compounded by passing the steam through a ring of moving blade,
through a ring of fixed blade and finally through a ring of moving blade. The nozzle angle is 18 o
and the blade exit angles and relative velocity coefficients are as following:
Blades Exit angles Velocity coefficient
First row moving blades 20 o 0.8
Fixed row blades 25 o 0.85
Second row moving blades 30 o 0.9
Find diagram efficiency under these conditions and power output for steam flow rate of 5 kg/s.
What would be maximum possible diagram efficiency for given inlet steam velocity & nozzle
angle?
