TOP 3 FAVORITES DURING THE SENTENARYO EXHIBIT

The Sentenaryo Exhibit featured 100 artworks of top artists who excelled in their
craft and artistry in painting, sculpture, etc. Among the 100, there are paintings that
captured my attention, and amazed me because of the beauty of how it was made. I am
not fond of paintings that have a complicated meaning that needs to be analyzed
properly because for me, if I were a spectator, one could not immediately comprehend
the meaning of a painting in just a few seconds, that is why I believed that in painting,
you must take into account the audience because no matter how nice the concept of
your painting is, it is the audience’ perception that matters. So it must be clear for the
audience to understand the concept behind the painting. In choosing the top paintings, I
have no particular order in which is my favorite painting because I believe that all the
paintings are equal, it’s just that there are some paintings that suit my tastes and
preferences.
Title: “Loop”

Artist: Jasmine Laran

Medium: Acrylic on wood

Size: 60 cm x 45 cm

This painting is really nice. I think that I can connect with the subject of the
painting just by merely looking at the painting. The painting is very simple. It is not
complicated as others would imagine it to be, it’s just a painting that depicts a person
riding a Bangka in the middle of nowhere. The painting depicts a stagnant life full of
recurring cycles. Life is constant in a way that the events just repeat every single day. It
also shows loneliness for repeating events in life alone. Being alone and being lost in
the vastness of space just shows that being alone is the same all throughout. The cycle
vastness of space represented life, the life that is yet to be experienced as a vast
unknown. And it represented a never ending cycle of being at the same spot all over
again. The painting is indeed a loop because in life, we may feel that we have nowhere
to go, and nowhere to go to, and everything seems like we are lost. But it is part of
growing up, and exploring life in a way that it would make us become a better person in
the future. The loops in our life only happen in a short period of time because sooner or
later, we dictate the loops that must occur to our lives.

By looking at the painting, the eyes of the audience would be directed to the
subject immediately. The subject is at the center, which means that the audience could
clearly see the main point of the painting, and work things from that. The painting is not
as complicated as other paintings would be. It’s just simple to the point that others could
understand the painting just by looking at it. The painting needs not to be analyzed in a
way that our brains would crack because it is just pretty simple. So let me analyze the
painting based on the elements of art.

First are the lines. The lines are horizontal. The horizontal lines contributed in
establishing the atmosphere of the painting. The lines contributed to the development of
movement in the painting. As you could see, the lines highly contributed of the clouds,
the sky, and the waves in the sea. The painting made use of lines in a significant
manner as it enhances the objects that can be found in the painting. The painting is very
emotional to the point that the painting is very dark in a sense that it enveloped the
painting in a gloomy atmosphere. The dark colors symbolize the sad feeling in the
painting. The meaning of the painting is sad because it shows the idea of being alone.
The loneliness in the painting is being presented in the colors. Using dark blue, blue
green, and dark green as the main colors of the color scheme of the painting emits an
atmosphere of sadness. Next is the shape of the painting. The painting is a rectangle
that has all the needed elements inside the rectangle. Being enclosed in a rectangle
contributes to the idea that the subject is enclosed in a world that the audience could
not intervene. Also, the shapes inside the canvas are only definite for the Bangka and
the subject (the person). The indefinite shape of the clouds and sea means that
everything that surrounds the person is also indefinite. Nothing is sure for the subject
especially that he/she is in the Bangka.
Next is the form of the painting. The painting is a free flowing artwork. For me,
the lines, the horizontal lines serve as markers that the painting just flows depending on
a certain unknown force (maybe time?). The flow in the painting suggests that
everything is just flowing in accordance with an abstract thing that makes everything a
loop. Another is the value of the painting. In the painting, it’s like everything is a shadow.
The painting shows dark colors. The dark colors also show off a shadow vibe to the
objects inside which means that the environment in the painting is dark with only small
amount of light present which contributed to the shadows. The shadows are also
concentrated at the center of the painting. Then next is space. The whole canvas was
consumed. The canvas is covered in colors and objects which mean that there are
several things happening inside the canvas. Lastly is the texture of the painting. The
painting seems like it is rough. If touched, the painting would be rough to touch.

As part of my reaction to the painting, I made a short essay that is inspired from
what I have understood from the painting. I incorporated some of the themes and
concepts that can be derived from the painting to this short essay.

I am Eunice; I am an Iskolar

She is Eunice; she is an Iskolar. 6 years ago, there was a young girl who entered
University of the Philippines Cebu High School. That girl was a nobody. Unlike others,
she came from a private school. She graduated in Elementary as the class valedictorian.
She entered the gates of the high school campus with head held up high. Everything
was new for her. She met new classmates who seemed so confident in their own ways.
She sat at the front portion of the room, sitting straight with her chin up, stomach in, and
poker face on. She was timid and well-behaved. The others find her intimidating; they
won’t even talk to her. One girl approached her and said, “Hi, I’m Metchie. We were
classmates in Day Care,” and that was the time that she opened herself to everyone.
She began to lead a group in making their assignments, reporting, and many more. She
met her friends who share the same interest as her. She became closer to her seatmate,
Chenny. She embraced high school life that was full of stressful but enjoyable learning
experiences and activities. It was her first time to sleep very late at night. It was her first
time to drink coffee. It was her first time to submit assignments and home works thru
emails. It was her first time to feel pressure in her academics. It was her first time to get
a failing score during the examination. It was her first time to feel insecure towards
others because they seem to know many things. It was her first time to feel like being a
top student is near the impossible. It was her first time to expect the unexpected as she
became the top student in their class. It was her first time to realize that she is an
Iskolar; she is Eunice.

She is Eunice; she is an Iskolar. 4 years ago, there was a girl who faced
challenges and struggles in her life as a student of the University of the Philippines
Cebu High School. That girl became a somebody, a member of the Student Council.
Unlike others, she became a student leader. She finished grade 7 and grade 8 with a
high rank. She entered the gates of the high school campus with sweat dripping from
her forehead, running as she is already late. Everything became usual for her. She
engaged in new activities that enhanced her skills and abilities. She sat in the back part
of the room with her head down as she slept while the teacher is discussing something.
She was loud and cheerful. One girl approached her and said, “Hi ate, the teachers are
looking for you,” and that was the time she found her life tiring. She was the usual
leader in group activities and reporting. She became the director of their play during the
Dramafest. She experienced difficulties in her academics. She got used to being loaded
with assignments, projects and many more. She became closer to her best friends. She
still embraced high school life that is full of stress and tiring days. It was her first time to
have her guidance counselor consultation with her parent. It was her first time to feel
like giving up. It was her first time to disappoint other people. It was her first time to end
the school year without having any medal as she was not part of the top 3 at the end of
the academic year. It was the time that she realized that life is full of ups and downs
especially that she is an Iskolar; she is Eunice.

She is Eunice; she is an Iskolar. Right now, there was a young lady who is
already a normal student of the University of the Philippines Cebu High School. That girl
was once a nobody and a somebody. Unlike others, she is reserved and serious. She
finished junior high school with high honors and received several special awards. She
entered the gates of the high school campus while brushing her hair. Everything is
normal for her. She is currently the Feature Editor of the UP Tambuli. She has always
seated near the aisle to her the lecture of her teachers. She was friendly yet quiet. One
girl approached her and said, “Hi, Ate Amazing,” and that was the time that she finds
her high school life really happy. As usual, she is the leader in all of the groups that she
is part of. She is the short girl with a loud voice. She treasures her moments with her
classmates despite the fact that all of them feel like giving up on all these tasks given to
them. It was her first time to feel only a few first times. It was her first time to feel like
everything is a loop for her. It was her first time to come to a point that she’s like the girl
in a boat wandering in a place which seems like no ending in the painting (“Loop”). It
was her first time to see herself and realize that life is like a loop. It was her first time to
think that she has been doing things every year. It struck to her that life is like a routine
or a cycle; people do things depending on which stage in their lives they are in. She
realized that being a student is like a loop, studying for how many years would make
you feel like everything is being made each year. And it was the time that she realized
that she is indeed an Iskolar; she is Eunice.
Title: “Wishful Thinking”

Artist: J Robert Olvido

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 45 cm x 60 cm

Wishful thinking. The title itself is touching because if we think of “Wishful

thinking,” we could think of our wishes. Showing the painting adds more meaning to the
title. The painting depicts a child sitting beside the window staring at the outside that is
raining. It is also evident that it is raining because the window in the painting shows
droplets of water in the window frame. The child seems like she is waiting for someone
or something to occur. Staring in space with no one or nothing means that the mind is
deep in thoughts which made people stare into places. The child seems like she is
waiting for a significant person to appear in front of her that is why she is waiting for that
person to come. Since it is a child, I suppose that the child is waiting for her parent,
maybe her mother or her father to come home already. The painting depicts a sad
scene of a child longing for her parent. The child’s back is the only part that can be seen
so we cannot tell if the child is crying or not but based on the mood being exuded by the
painting, the child is sad.

The painting is simple and one can understand its meaning immediately without
thinking of it deeply because the painting was able to relay its message to the audience
immediately. The subject who is a child also plays a significant role in the impact of the
painting because a child that is sad could capture the hearts of many people, and it is
enough to gather the audience, and the painting demands the audience to feel sad and
pity to the subject of the painting.

Now, let us analyze the elements of art in the picture. First is line. The lines in the
painting are not that evident because the lines are already mixed showing no definite
lines that comes from painting. I only noticed dots or small dots that made up the entire
painting. Next is the color. The color of the painting is realistic. The shirt of the child is
colored violet or purple, the wood frames is colored brown, etc. The colors contributed
to the realistic effect that is being shown in the painting. The colors mean that the
painting occurs in reality, and it cannot be avoided. There would really be instances
where a child would feel longingness and loneliness. The colors show that a normal
child could feel the same way as to that of the painting. Next is the form of the painting.
The painting has a definite form which shows that the objects in the painting are well-
defined in a way that they can be identified. The definite objects show a painting that
has objects which serve as the elements of the environment of the painting. It exudes a
three-dimensional effect because the sitting child has a certain height. Also, at the
outside of the window frame, the image of the raining environment shows an effect that
it is actually raining inside the painting. Next is the value of the painting. The painting
shows shadows of a child which means that the painting depicts a child sitting. The
painting is not that dark, and not that light. It only depicts an atmosphere that is really
occurring whenever it would rain. Since it is raining in the picture, the surrounding of the
child is also dark. The only light things are the things that are colored light naturally.

Next is the space in the painting. The painting is colored in all of its sides. The
colors show a natural environment that occurs. Since all of the spaces are filled with
colors, the entire canvas can is consumed in a way that it is part of the painting. There
are blank spaces as all spaces have significance to the development of the entire
painting. Lastly is the texture of the painting. The painting seems like a smooth painting.
The painting looks like it is being smoothened because there are no marks of roughness.
I think that the smoothness of the painting also shows a soft side to the painting. Since it
is about a child longing for something or someone, the smoothness of the painting
contributed to the soft image or soft story that is being presented in the painting.

The painting is a beautiful but touching image of a child. We can feel the
emotions in the painting just by looking at it. The raining effect outside the window frame
added the feeling of sadness and gloominess in the painting. Overall, the painting is
very heartwarming, and it could really capture the hearts of the audience.
Title: “Emissary”

Artist: Danielle Nazareno

Medium: Installation on Wood Frame

Size: 60 cm x 45 cm

Emissary. As defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word emissary is used

to describe a person that is assigned or tasked to do something or to go somewhere for
a certain task or activity. Looking at the artwork from afar, one would notice that it is
entirely pitch black. It captured my attention because it is black, and beside it is a plain
white artwork but it is worth 10, 000.00. I was shocked to see the price, as to how it is
even worth 10 thousand pesos cash. Because of the shocking price, I inspected the
artwork and there I saw that there is a small figure on top of the artwork. The small
figure is a woman in formal attire seems to be walking towards the edge of the artwork.
And there, it hit me that the woman is walking towards a very difficult mission. The
woman is an emissary that is about to take a step into a dangerous task that is still
unknown for her.

The meaning of the artwork is very simple. I think that if one would be an
observer, he/she could immediately see the small figure of top of the artwork. The small
figure is unnoticeable but by looking at it closely, the figure would be realized. The
meaning of the artwork is easy to understand in a way that it can be interpreted
immediately. I also think that the artwork shows that emissaries are supposed to work
invisibly, securing that the others would not mind their presence or their work. And from
there, I realized why the artwork was entirely black in a sense that it would not allow
others to see the emissary on top of the artwork.

Now, let us analyze the artwork using the elements of art. First is the line. The
wooden canvas-like material was painted into black, and the direction of the paint is
vertical. It can also be noticed that right beneath the small figure on top of the artwork is
a darker black that seems like a shadow or the path of the figure. Next is the form of the
artwork. I can say that it is three-dimensional if we immediately take into account the
small figure of a woman on top of the artwork. The woman is standing but it is faced
downwards. But if we look at the artwork from afar, the artwork seems like a two-
dimensional artwork with black as the only color of the artwork. Next is the shape of the
artwork. The artwork has a certain height and width, depending on the material used.
The wood limited the space that is depicted in the artwork, but I believe that it was
supposed that the artist would want to have a vast area of black as it is the highlight of
the artwork, and it clearly shows that the emissary is walking towards a space of
unknowns.

Next is the value of the artwork. The artwork is filled with black paint. That is why
the color of the artwork is entirely black. The artwork is very dark in a way that it
contributed to the meaning of the artwork. Then next is the space consumed in the
painting. The painting is full of black colors. The color black means that everything is
unknown for the emissary and it covered the entire space consumed in the artwork.
Leaving no space uncolored means that the aim of the artist is to deliver a message that
everything is unknown for the emissary.

Then next is the color of the artwork. The artwork is colored black, and the small
figure of a woman on top has an outfit that is bright, that is why the artist chose red as
the color of the outfit of the woman, in order for the woman to be noticed by the
audience. Last but not the least is the texture of the artwork. I can feel no texture just by
looking at the artwork because I feel like the texture is not meant to be felt by the
audience.

The artwork is simple yet we can expect for the unexpected in the artwork. We
do not realize that there are things that must not be left untold just by looking at the
artwork. It demands utmost concentration, and focus to understand the entire artwork.
