fon Module 3 in Paper 1 which can be a guaranteed 15 marks once this module is
learnt well
This also goes for any topic that may seem too simple/boring/long/unfamiliar to past
papers. ALL topics are off equal importance, since they will ALL be tested in Paper |.
4. Group past papers by topic and use while studying
ALWAYS study witha stack of past papers beside you (two/three years atleast
Carefully read through the questions from each module and pick out those that relate
‘to the topics youre about study.
5. How to study with past papers ~2 options
Option 1
Identify 2 question and begin your research and note/point taking. Visit your text
book, school/lessons notes and read through all notes collectively and then formulate
your ovn major points to answer the question, Once the major points are established,
continue by adding substance to each point.
Option 2

Which is better?
Ether way, you are getting practice with the questions and youte also getting a tonne

The Caribbean Studies Essay 101
1. An essay a day will get you an A (or every other day)
ps: topstudentcaribbean,comisingle-posi201704/18/examprep-caisbean-studiossusie Got 99 Problems? Don't Let Caribbean Studies Be One of Them | TopStudent | Careers, degrees, exams, life
It really important that you try your hardest to get an essay done every day or every
ther day leading up to the final exam. During term time, you should try for one a
‘week at least from each module, Practice makes perfect!
2.Time yourself when you do essays
Time is the silent killer! Make sure to time yourself every time you try an essay at
home. Believe me, ifyou de not time yourself you are going to write your essays in an
Unorganized manner and youl be too anxious to even think when you're running out
oftime under exam conditions.
3. How to allocate time to essays IN THE EXAM,
‘Tne paper 2 consists of four sections: A & C- Module 1,8 & D~ Module 2.
You are to choose ONE question from each section therefore a total of EOUR essays are
‘0 be done in 3 hours that is; two 20 mark questions and two 30 mark questions
‘On the 20 mark questions spend a maximum of 35 minutes on each one, with S
‘minutes allotted to PLANNING and 30 minutes for writing,
(On the 30 mark questions -@ maximum of $5 minutes on each with 5 minutes for
PLANNING!
4.How to plan and structure an essay
Identity what the question is asking of you -ansiver ONLY that question
Read the question carefully and thoroughly TWICE. Proceed to underline the KEY
behavioural verbs used in the question,
For example:
"Describe the impact of Rastafarianism on cultural practices beyond the Caribbean
region”
‘The above question would be answered quite differently if the behavioural verb was
to be changed from “Describe the impact” to “Assess the impact " Therefore, please
have a look at the Ist of behavioural verbs that are used in Caribbean studies
‘examinations which ic povided inthe sli
‘Also In this case, pay attention to the impact on WHAT and WHERE. You will do poorly
if you answer a question other than the one asked
Plan: 4-6 points for 20 marks, 6-8 points for 30 marks
Before actually beginning to write your essay you MUST plan inorder for your essay to
rot only flow but be well organized and exceptionally done with well-developed
points. There is no rule stating how much paragraphs an essay should consist of but
tone should try to at least give 4-6 well developed points for the 20 mark questions
whist the 30 marks 6-8 points sxclusive of the invoduction and conclusion
Again, THIS IS NOT A RULE.
Decide what these points are before you begin to write and in what order you will
present them. Als think of supporting evidence, examples and arguments fer your
points in the planning phase This will make writing quicker and easier
Structure your introduction
Your introduction must contaln the general gist ofthe question so, with reference to
‘the above question for example, one would explain what Rastafarianism is and give 2
Teele background information. The Intro MUST incorporate your thesis statement
‘hich gives your opinion/stance on the topic ie. the points that you will make.
Body paragraph structure
State the major point at the beginning of each paragraph in the body and go on to
‘explain the point coupled with examples to support it Allin all ensure that the
‘explanation and examples are linked to the overall argument.
Conclusion structure
