Internet and education

The intensity of internet usage in several countries varies, it depends on the

needs of personal information. In some developed countries they use the internet in
almost every aspect of their lives, this is inversely proportional to some developing
countries that do not even know the internet at all. The internet in the current era seems
to be a primary need, many people use the internet to support their activities both in
doing work and doing daily activities. In addition, helping humans in increasing internet
productivity is also used to fulfill their recreational needs such as watching movies or
listening to music. The internet is also used to connect people to one another..
Still, the data from the research conducted by the Internet Society allows for the
assumption that there is a technological ground for a drastic increase in the intensity of
the international information exchange Population of Indonesia's population currently
reaches 262 million people.
More than 50 percent or around 143 million people have been connected to the
internet throughout 2017, at least according to the latest report from the Indonesian
Internet Service Providers Association (APJII).
with the large number of internet users making the pattern of society change. In
addition to changes in the social domain the internet also affects the realm of education
becausethe Internet offers two main benefits which are communication and information
(Warren et. al.,1998)
In the current era, the internet has penetrated into the world of education, this
will directly or indirectly affect the pattern of education in several countries in the
world. For example, in the United States, schools have used simple multimedia-based
computer software to solve problems and produce electronic products at the appropriate
cognitive level.
Based on the opportunities provided by the Internet for de-monopolization of
information sources and estimation during the teaching process (no time restraints) of
individual learning styles of each student, and proceeding from the thesis of M.
Knowles (Knowles, 1991) When educational aspect of the Internet use is considered, it
is obvious that students, or people in general, who look for information can access it
easily and with low cost
The application of the Internet in education is understood as the usage of
Internet technologies to solve various educational tasks, namely, teaching, learning and
management of the educational process, Various typologies of Application of the
Internet in Education have been proposed the literature recently
The educational applications of the Internet are supported by some learning
theories. With the access to the Internet, it is immediately discovered that the whole
hypertext material is a learning tool. In other words, those enormous groups of texts and
multimedia contexts have not been created to be read lineally, but rather they use
connections to make remissions, to put in contact different parts, or to be connected
with other texts. That is to say, it is a tool; an instrument that, coded and registered,
transmits information, and includes other processes accompanied or derived by the
transmission, no matter this is the cause or the consequence.
The habits and the beliefs are changing quickly, especially the relationship
among people and the world of knowledge. The change is mainly significant in the fact
of the information technology appearance in the social scenario, underlining the
cognitive aspect and its possibilities as a communication way for people and as a
personal way of selfexpression.
The computers were introduced into the society suppressing, certainly, time and
space, but also claiming human intervention and participation. In fact, this is quite a
new value: these machines are humanizing instruments and they are better compared to
previous media, as the television, for example, that propitiates a more passive
relationship. Much of the precedent passivity does not longer exist.
The new technologies and, especially, the Internet, offer the possibility to select,
to choose, to transport the information, to visit libraries and museums, to talk to other
people – even to see them – in real time. It is possible because nowadays the computers
are, mainly, communication instruments rather than calculating machines.
They are instruments able to process a quantity of information, relating it,
enlarging it and illustrating it with animated images and sound. They have opened a
door to the hope for a peaceful encounter among nations. To speak, to dialogue, to point
and to criticize is something very simple thanks to new technology
Nowadays kids do not like to use libraries or any kinds of real life resources but
they can access these places online and benefit from them easily and quickly According
to Dryli & Kinnaman (1996), the Internet enables students to find information as well as
allowing them to think critically and creatively, to become collaborative and
cooperative workers and to solve problems.
The Internet allows us to reach an essential objective in the learning process: the
personalization of the teaching. It allows adapting it to the necessities of students, in
accordance with their previous knowledge and interest. It allows each student to
advance in his/her development in a personal and autonomous way according to his/her
abilities.
In addition, currently in America a project called OLPC (One Laptop Per Child)
is running. Through this OLPC program, children have the opportunity to access data
and information directly and independently. In this way America has given birth to
many scholars who are experts in technology.
In using the internet in the aspect of life it must have positive and negative impacts.
Especially with the use of the internet in the field of education has a big risk to children
who in fact still lack understanding in filtering information that is obtained on the
internet. Therefore education must be the director of internet use not the other way
around, because that way the use of the internet will be maximized and can minimize
the abuse of the internet.

In addition to America, which is a developing country, the internet has also

spread throughout the world, one of which is in the country of Indonesia. Indonesia is
one of the developing countries in Asia, Indonesia has always been influenced by a
number of foreign countries that once colonized the Indonesian nation. In Indonesia the
internet entered in 1999, which was originally known as the "network community".
Then starting in 1995 several BBS in Indonesia such as Clarissa provided telnet access
services abroad. By using a remote Lynx browser in the US, Internet users in Indonesia
can access the Internet (HTTP). In 2004, Telkom began launching the Internet Goes to
School (IG2S) program, which in mid-2004 began with free Internet workshops /
training programs in various cities throughout Indonesia by Telkom DIVRE-DIVRE
which made hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and even Indonesian students
to know Internet.
Today’s students, future scholars and knowledge workers, are required to have
the ability to reach the correct information and they need to be able to get the necessary
and accurate information amongst unlimited bits of information. “Finding the right
information is only one side of the core business of academics.
When the previous studies on the Internet are examined, it can clearly be seen
that the majority is focused on the differences between learning outcomes of the courses
taught with using the Internet and the courses taught in the traditional ways (Benoit et.
al., 2006)
In general it was clear that the majority of the students believed they can use the
Internet as an educational tool. The new technology can be an effective tool to achieve a
more harmonious and sustainable development as well as to eliminate the inequalities
among nations. But this tool will be effective only if its use is based on solid ethical
bases that must be present in the trade, environment, application of the scientific
knowledge and shared use of knowledge in general.
Only a very small amount of participants stated that they were not able to use it
for educational purposes, which is very promising for the future The only problematic
areas which seemed the participants are not very good at were blogs, wikis and e-
learning portals and the reason might be neither students nor teachers could really cope
with them efficiently and appropriately
Furthermore, educational journals could be another issue to be considered. As
the participants of this study were preparatory school students, they might have not
needed to use educational journals in order to be successful in their academic studies or
fulfill their academic tasks
There were certain areas that students felt comfortable while using the Internet
such as the search engines on the Internet, which is easily and efficiently used and
preferred by 80% of the participants in this study. Also, they stated that they used social
websites to share knowledge and talk about school subjects
As a further study, it could be a good idea to conduct a similar study after a
course which aims to familiarize students with these tools. Education is a very valuable
asset for humans, because with education, humans can make progress so rapidly in all
aspects of life. And the internet is a product of the development of knowledge possessed
by humans.
The internet leads us to a more distant world, facilitates all access to various
worlds and makes all people in the world connected. All the advantages and
disadvantages of the internet will continue to grow with time, as well as challenges that
will be faced in the future. With the presence of the internet inside the world of
education is expected to promote education to be more innovative and self-sufficient
and to minimize crime through the internet that will occur in the future, because with
education we can become wise internet users. This proves that the internet and
education are very closely related to each other
