TURBINE MANUFACTURES ADOPT LEAN PREMIX FLAME AND COOLING METHOD.
BECAUSE TEMPERATURE OF LEAN PREMIX FLAME IS LOWER THAN THAT OF CONVENTIONAL FLAME(PILOT,
DIFFUSION FLAME), THEY CAN REDUCE THERMAL NOx EMISSION.
AND ACCORDING TO COOLING METHOD(AIR OF STEAM) IN HOT PATH MATERIAL OF GAS TURBINE, HIGHER

IN CASE OF THE GAS TURBINE WON'T SPEED UP EVEN THOUGH FUEL MASS FLOW WAS SUPPLIED TO
THERMAL LOAD LIMIT, THERE ARE SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS SUCH AS STUCK MECHANICALLY OR ERROR OF
CONTROLLER. SO THE GAS TURBINE CAN BE TRIPPED BY PROTECTIVE CIRCUIT SUCH AS TOO LOW
ACCELERATION DURING SPEED UP.(TIME REQUIRED SPEED FROM 12.5Hz TO 47.5Hz EXCEEDS 350s).
DURING THIS RUN UP OPERATION, THE SUB GROUP CONTROLLER OF GAS TURBINE PLAYS A ROLL
ACCORDING TO SPEED(IGNITION, BLOW OFF VALVES ACTIVITY, COOLING AIR VALVES ACTIVITY ETC..).

2. SPEED CONTROLLER(SPEED vs. TEMPERATURE AND LOAD)
GAS TURBINE'S GENERATOR IS A SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE SO THREE ESSENTIAL CONDITION MUST BE
READY FOR PARALLEL OPERATION IN GRID. THREE FACTORS ARE SAME SPEED, SAME VOLTAGE AND SAME
PHASE ROTATION.
IF ONE OUT OF THESE THREE CONDITION IS NOT READY, THAT MACHINE CAN NOT ONLY ENTER IN GRID
BUT ALSO KEEP THE OPERATION AS SYNCHRONOUS MACHINE.
SO SPEED CONTROLLER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ONE OUT OF THREE CONDITION(SAME SPEED)BEFORE
AND AFTER SYNCHRONIZATION. BEFORE SYNCHRONIZATION IT MAKES SPEED SAME AS GRID AND AFTER
SYNCHRONIZATION IT KEEPS SPEED AS DEFINED SUCH AS 50Hz.
IF THE POWER DEMAND IS MORE THAN SUPPLY AFTER SYNCHRONIZATION, UNDOUBTEDLY FREQUENCY OF
GRID BECOMES DOWN AND ALL THE IN OPERATING SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES SPEED IS LOWER THAN DEFINED

WHEN TURBINE OUTLET TEMPERATURE REACHES TO TEMPERATURE LIMIT AND COMBUSTOR LOAD DEMAND
INCREASE, LOAD/TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER SENDS OPEN SIGNAL TO IGV SERVO MOTOR TO INCREASE AIR
MASS FLOW.
MORE AIR MASS FLOW SUPPLIED TO COMBUSTOR MAKES TURBINE OUTLET TEMPERATURE COLD AND THEN
CONTROLLER SEND MORE FUEL MASS SIGNAL TO FUEL CONTROL VALVES FOR KEEPING THE TEMPERATURE
LIMIT. LOAD/TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER REPEATS ABOVE ACTION UNTIL IGV POSITION REACHES MAXIMUM
POSITION.
WHEN TARGET LOAD(GENERATOR MW DEMAND) COMES DOWN, THIS CONTROLLER OPERATES IN OPPOSITE
DIRECTION TO ABOVE. THESE ACTION OF LOAD/TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER IS SO SMOOTH THAT WE CAN'T SEE
WITH THE NAKED EYE IN NORMAL RATIO LOAD UP AND DOWN OPERATION.
③ AFTER MAXIMUM IGV OPEN POSITION(=100%)
AS SHOWN IN BRAYTON CYCLE, GAS TURBINE EFFICIENCY IS CLOSELY RELATED TO TURBINE INLET
TEMPERATURE(TIT). SO THIS SECTION IS MOST EFFICIENCY PERIOD AND MOST SERIOUS TO HOT GAS PATH
MATERIAL OF GAS TURBINE. BECAUSE THERE IS MORE FUEL MASS FLOW AND NO MORE AIR FLOW, THIS
SECTION CAN BE CALLED OVER-FIRING OPERATION. WHEN IGV REACHES THE MAXIMUM POSITION, THIS
CONTROLLER MAKES ADDITIONAL TEMPERATURE(OVER-FIRING OFFSET) AND PUTS ADDITIONAL FUEL MASS FLOW
INTO COMBUSTOR.
IF THERE ARE ANY UNSTABLE FACTOR SUCH AS HIGH THERMAL NOx, UNBURNED COMPOSITION INCREASE,
AND TOO HIGH TURBINE INLET TEMPERATURE CAUSE DAMAGE TO HOT PATH MATERIAL, OVER-FIRING OFFSET
CAN NOT BE.

DYNAMIC PRESSURE FLUCTUATION IN COMBUSTOR,
AND ACCELERATION OF COMBUSTOR CHAMBER.
AS KNOWN WELL, FLAME FLASHBACK CAUSES SERIOUS DAMAGES NEAR AROUND BURNERS AND FLAME OFF
CAUSES THERMAL STRESS BY SUDDEN COOLING DOWN MATERIAL OF GAS TURBINE.
BUT THE EFFECTS OF DYNAMIC PRESSURE FLUCTUATION AND ACCELERATION ARE NOT KNOWN WELL.
IN REGARDING TO SPECIAL MEASUREMENT SUCH AS PIEZOELECTRIC SENSORS INSTALLED IN COMBUSTION
CHAMBER ARE USED FOR COMBUSTOR OPTIMIZATION AND ACCELERATION SENSORS INSTALLED COMBUSTION
CHAMBER CASING ARE USED FOR PROTECTING GAS TURBINE(LOAD REDUCTION OR EMERGENCY TRIP), THE
SIGNAL FROM THOSE MEASUREMENTS SHOWS THE FLAME CONDITION INDIRECTLY.
BY ANALYZING DYNAMIC PRESSURE SIGNAL, THE FLAME CONDITION CAN BE DESCRIBED.
