CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES IN CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Objectives:

At the end of my 15 minute discussion, the following shall be achieved.

1. To be able to determine and describe environmental factors affecting curriculum development;


2. To be able to understand the importance of an effective environment for curriculum development;
3. Application of the described factors for the development of the nursing curriculum.

Definition of Terms:

1. Curriculum
From the Latin word "Currere" which means race course/ to run/run way. Curriculum refers to as
the formal and informal content and process by which learners gain knowledge and understanding,
develop skills, and alter attitudes, appreciations, and values under the supervision of an academic
institution. (Satar, 2013)

2. Curriculum Development
It is the process of selecting, organizing, executing and evaluating learning experience on the
basis of the needs, abilities, and interest of the learners and the nature of the society or community.
Curriculum Development is basically the systematic planning of what is taught and learned in an
academic institution as reflected in courses of study and academic programs. (Satar, 2013)

3. Environmental Factors

Several factors affect all curriculum development in meeting the needs of 21st century learners in both
organized academic settings and corporation learning centers.

A good curriculum development requires selecting learning goals, designing knowledge delivery models
while creating assessment methods for individual and group progress. Factors affecting curriculum development
include two types of factor that have great influence and impact on the development of curriculum namely:
Internal and External Factors.
