What do they read?
How do they read?
How do they interpret what they have
read?
What is my role as a reading teacher in
teaching today’s learners?
• What is a text?
• -whenever we produce an interpretation of
something's meaning - a book, television
programme, magazine, T-shirt or kilt, piece of
furniture or ornament - we treat it as a text. A
text is something that we make meaning from.

Characteristics of a Literary Text

Predominance of the poetic function over


the referential function because it is not
limited to communicating; it is about
influencing the reader’s mood making him
live emotions and feelings. The author
shares his experiences with the reader,
recreating them in him.

It is absolutely ambiguous; it is this feature


where the multiple interpretation possibilities
reside.
It is obviously connotative; it produces many
possibilities of interpretation depending on the
literary and personal context of the reader.
Connotation is the essence of literary language.

Richness of poetic resources such as literary


figures. It is plentiful in images.
Syntax is more flexible. The order of the elements
may vary.
Vocabulary is precise and irreplaceable. A word
cannot be replaced by another one because the
expressive power changes even if the idea remains
the same.

Words are chosen by their euphony.


It has emotional weight.
Harmonic disposition of its elements,
produced by a good combination of
words.

The message creates a reality of its


own, different from the surrounding
reality.
It can be explained and described
but not proven.
It is symbolic.
• With your group, and utilizing the materials
provided, make a creative graphic organizer of
your choice presenting the different elements
of a literary text.
• Choose a reporter/ reporters to present your
group output.

• Reading for textual details is a critical
competency as it directs the
attention of the reader to the text
itself and its meaning to the world.
