OBJECTIVE:

1. To study the simulation model SIM 2100 Cascade controller.

2. To study the behaviour of model after changing set level change.
3. To study the behaviour of model and get data after changing inlet flow rate.
4. To compare these results with the feedback controller.
5. To study the behaviour of model after inlet and outlet disturbances.

OBSERVATIONS:

 The simulation model SIM 2100 is cascade controller model.

 Two different flow lines are attached to the vessel with level indicator.
 Flow indicators are attached to the feed lines and outlet lines.
 Level indicator is attached to vessel to control level of the vessel.
 This system is very sensitive to change in variables of the cascade controller.
 We can change the inputs to get the data of the cascade controller and compare with the
feedback controller.
Assignment 1: Introduction to cascade control.

Plot only LIC_201_03 SP, LIC_201_03 MV, LIC_201_03 OP, FIC_201_04 SP, FIC_201_04
MV and FIC_201_04 OP.

Before continuing, record a prediction for what will happen to the plotted values if you change
level set-point from 50 % to 60 %.

Variables Prediction

LIC_201_03 SP CONSTANT
LIC_201_03 MV INCREASE
LIC_201_03 OP STABLE
FIC_201_04 SP DECREASE
FIC_201_04 MV CONSTANT
FIC_201_04 OP DECREASE

Q.1.0) what happens to the following variables?

VARIABLES RESULT
LIC_201_03 SP CONSTANT
LIC_201_03 MV DECREASE (under damped)
LIC_201_03 OP DECREASE(under damped)
FIC_201_04 SP DECREASE(under damped)
FIC_201_04 MV DECREASE(under damped)
FIC_201_04 OP DECREASE(under damped)

Q.1.1) How does what actually happened compare to your predictions?

Answer: In Cascade controller my predictions is totally wrong because when it takes lot of time
with level set point change from 50% to 60% to settle down.

Q.1.2) Why did the model respond as it did?

Answer: The model responded in this way because due to level set point change. The
adaptability for cascade controller is too difficult as compared to feedback controller.

Q.1.3) Which level reached a steady state value at the new set-point first, the simple feedback
controller or the cascade controller?

Answer: Simple feedback Controller reached at a steady state value first while, cascade
controller take lot of time to reach steady state.
Q.1.4) Which controller took the longest to settle, the simple feedback controller or the cascade
controller?

Answer: Cascade controller took longest to settle because it takes 11 minutes and 57 seconds to
reach at a steady state.

ASSIGNMENT 2: Investigate the controller response to change in inlet flow

Restart and plot only FI_201_02, LIC_201_03 SP, LIC_201_03 MV, & LIC_201_03 OP.

Before increasing the inlet flow , predict what will be happen to the following variables:

VARIABLES PREDICTION
FI_201_02 FLOW RATE STABLE
LIC_201_03 OP INCREASE
LIC_201_03 MV INCREASE
LIC_201_03 SP INCREASE
Q.2.0) How did your predictions compare to the actual response?

VARIABLES RESULT
FI_201_02 FLOW RATE STABLE(under damped)
LIC_201_03 OP STABLE(under damped)
LIC_201_03 SP STABLE(under damped)
LIC_201_03 MV STABLE(under damped)

Q.2.1) How long does it take for the controller to reach steady state?

Answer: Controller took 1 minute, 44 seconds to reach steady state.

Q.2.2) How much did the Level Overshoot?

Answer: Level Overshoot is 44.03.

Q.2.3) How much did the level oscillate before reaching the new steady state level?

Answer: Level oscillate 2.5 times before reaching new steady state level.

Q.2.4) Based on the answers to these questions, is this controller response to a step change
reasonable? Why?

Answer: Yes, the controller response to the step change is reasonable because it takes little time
to get steady state level which is more justify to adopt those settings.

Q.2.5) How does the cascade response compare to the feedback response?

Answer: The cascade response is better as comparison to feedback controller. The number of
level oscillations in feedback controller is more than cascade controller and it takes more time to
reach steady state condition.

Q.2.6) Which controller is better at responding to a change in the inlet flow rate?

Answer: Cascade controller is responding better than feedback controller. It take less time to
reach steady state condition with less number of oscillations.
ASSIGNMENT 3: Investigate the controller response to inlet and outlet disturbances.

Restart and plot only FI_201_02, LIC_201_03 SP, LIC_201_03 MV, & LIC_201_03 OP.

Set inlet disturbance 5 m3/h.

Q.3.0) What is the maximum level being reached?

Answer: Maximum level being reached is 59.64%.

Q.3.1) What is the minimum level being reached?

Answer: Minimum level being reached is 42.95%.

Q.3.2) Is the maximum level being reached higher or lower than for feedback controller?

Answer: The maximum level of cascade controller is higher than feedback controller.

Q.3.3) Is the minimum level being reached higher or lower than for feedback controller?

Answer: The minimum level of the cascade controller is lower than feedback controller. For
feedback controller it reaches to 43.95%

Q.3.4) Using the last two answers, is the feedback controller on the discharge better at
dampening an inlet disturbances?

Answer: feedback controller on the discharge is better at dampening inlet disturbances because it
provides stable oscillations at inlet disturbances as compared to cascade controller.
Picture of the graph

Restart and plot only FI_201_05, LIC_201_03 SP, LIC_201_03 MV, LIC_201_03 OP,
FIC_201_04 SP, FIC_201_04 MV, & FIC_201_04 OP.

Set outlet disturbance of 0.2 bara.

Q.3.5) What is the maximum level being reached?

Answer: Maximum level being reached is 51.08%.

Q.3.6) What is the minimum level being reached?

Answer: Minimum level being reached is 49.31%.

Q.3.7) Is the maximum level being reached higher or lower than for feedback controller?

Answer: The maximum level of cascade controller is being lower than the feedback controller. In
feedback controller the maximum level reaches to 51.59%
Q.3.8) Is the minimum level being reached higher or lower than for feedback controller?

Answer: The minimum level of cascade controller is being higher than the feedback controller.
For feedback controller the minimum level reaches to 48.34%.

Q.3.9) Using the last two answers, is the feedback controller on the discharge better at
dampening an outlet disturbances?

Answer: Cascade controller is dampening well at dampening outlet disturbances because after
some oscillations it reaches to the steady state and it is more dampening than feedback
controller.

Conclusion:

Simulation 2100 model is used to operate how to control the cascade controller. the system
shows the behaviour of the cascade controller after inlet flow rate change. Cascade controller is
better responding as compared to feedback controller to change in the inlet flow rate chnge and
better dampening at outlet disturbances.
