Thirty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time

Greetings of Peace.

I have an appeal to make. We are in somewhat of a dire need of Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers at the
Shrine. Lectors assist at the part of the Mass called the Liturgy of the Word. They proclaim the readings and
the psalms at weekday Masses and proclaim the readings and the Prayer of the Faithful at the Weekend
Masses. Eucharistic Ministers participate in the part of the Mass called the Liturgy of the Eucharist. They
assist the priest at the altar and help to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at communion.

Sometimes people think that they are not worthy to perform these roles at Mass. Humility is, in fact, a
preferred quality for candidates for these roles. An important characteristic that Shrine Lectors and
Eucharistic Ministers need to have is openness to the training that we give before they begin serving. Every
church has a somewhat different approach to service as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. We simply ask
that you respect the way that we do things here at the Shrine.

Finally, in volunteering, know that sometimes during the week we very much need people in these roles, and
other parts of the week the need is less. Any flexibility in your schedule is a further contribution to us.
