Dust can be a problem in any industry. the hazards of dusts like wood and
silica are well recognised, and specific guidelines must be adhered to where
these and numerous other substances hazardous to health are produced.
What are the DUst regULations?

Dust will be a ‘substance hazardous to health’ for the purposes of
COSHH if it is a substance:
• Is listed in the CLP Regulations.
• For which an indication of danger specified for the substance is very
duST REGulATIoNS (coShh 2002)

toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive, irritant.
• If it is a substance to which a workplace exposure limit (WEL) applies.
If not falling within any of the above categories, paragraph (d) of the definition of ‘substance
hazardous to health’ in regulation 2 of COSHH states that any dust when present in the
workplace at a concentration in air equal to or greater than 10 mg/m3 of inhalable dust or a
4 mg/m3 of respirable (as a time weighted average over an 8-hour period) is considered to be
a substance hazardous to health.
Where is DUst LiKeLy to oCCUr?

Different forms of the same substance may present different hazards.
A large piece of a solid may present a negligible hazard, but when
ground into a dust it may become hazardous; wood and sandstone are
obvious examples.
Many work activities produce dust. some examples are:
• filling bags or emptying them into skips or other containers
• weighing loose powders and sieving / screening operations
• cutting, eg paving stones, cleaning and maintenance work
• milling, grinding, sanding down or other similar operations
• feeding livestock from bags or conveyor systems

Eliminate dust by using special cutting techniques rather than

by grinding or sawing, or by using wet-cutting processes
Using less toxic materials, eg powdered alumina instead of

flint or quartz as in the pottery industry
Using dust-suppressed materials and emulsions or pastes

rather than mixing dry constituents

REGulATIoNS 2005
Work at height means work in any place where, if there were no precautions
in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury.
What is ConsiDereD WorKing at height?

Examples of working at height are if you:
• Are working on a ladder or a flat roof
• Could fall through a fragile surface
• Could fall into an opening in a floor or a hole in the ground.
Always take a sensible approach when considering precautions for work at height.

There may be some low-risk situations where common sense tells you no particular
precautions are necessary and the law recognises this.
Can i Use LaDDers & stepLaDDers?

There is a common misconception that ladders & stepladders are
banned, but this is not the case. There are many situations where a
ladder is the most suitable equipment for working at height.

Before working at height you must work through these simple steps:
Try to avoid work at height where it is reasonably practicable to do so.
Where work at height cannot be avoided, prevent falls using either an

existing place of work that is already safe or the right type of equipment.
Minimise the distance and consequences of a fall, by using the

right type of equipment where the risk cannot be eliminated.

Hand Arm Vibration (HAVS) causes changes in sensory perception
which can lead to permanent numbness of fingers, muscle weakness
and, in some cases, bouts of white finger.

The Cable Detection EZiCAT i650 is a

high specification cable location system
designed to provide pin-point detection
of services through state-of-the-art
digital signal processing (DSP) enhanced
with depth detection and data logging
functions for collection of service and

Obtaining accurate information about the

location of buried utilities has never been
more essential to protect employees and
equipment during any excavation project.
In most applications, the use of a signal
generator is always advised to strengthen
the search capabilities of a cable
avoidance tool (CAT). Signal generators
induce a signal into the utility even if no
power is present which can be pickup by
a CAT.
Flexibility
The Cable Detection EZiTEX XF features
a compact design that fully protects
against the harshest of conditions and
has been rated to IP65. There are two
configurations:
