Fern Petronella Vosen was born
in 1927 near Cottonwood, Montana,
north of Havre on the Hi-Line. Both
Fern’s grandmother, Petronella
Verploegen and her mother, Marie
Thompson, raised her to be a busy
girl on the farm, emphasizing the
importance of keeping her heart
and hands in crafts, the garden and
caring for others.
Fern is an artist who raised eight
children. She passed her creativity
on to her children through many
artistic projects and she doesn’t let
her dementia slow her down when
she is intent upon completing a
project.
Growing up on a farm taught
Fern and her sister, Kathleen, to
make up their play things. They
learned the art of making something
from nothing. So, when Fern’s
daughter, Sheila suggested that they
learn to make Amish Toothbrush
rugs from old sheets, three years
ago, it was a perfect fit. Fern and her

and inquired of his father as to when they could
discuss his use of the car. Paid for by Taryn Stebleton for Valley County Clerk & Recorder • 510 3rd Ave. N • Glasgow, MT 59230

His father said he’d make a deal with his son,

“You bring your grades up from a C to a B average,
study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then
we’ll talk about the car.”
The boy thought about that for a moment,
decided he’d settle for the offer and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said, “Son, you’ve
brought your grades up and I’ve observed that you
have been studying your Bible, but I’m disappointed
you haven’t had your hair cut. “
The boy said, “You know, Dad, I’ve been thinking
about that, and I’ve noticed in my studies of the Bible
that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long
hair, Moses had long hair, and there’s even strong
evidence that Jesus had long hair. “
Says Dad, “Did you also notice that they all
walked everywhere they went?”

The man walked over to the perfume counter and

told the clerk he’d like a bottle of Chanel No. 5 for his
wife’s 50th birthday.
“A little surprise, eh?” smiled the clerk.
“You better believe it is,” answered the customer.
“She’s expecting a cruise.”
