1.0 INTRODUCTION

Meaning Of Open Source Software (OSS)

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source

code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved

for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study,

change, and improve the software. Some open source software is available within

the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public,

collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-

source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated

content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Software

There are two types of Computer Software and they are : -

1. System Software - System Software is a software that helps to run

computer system.
Examples of System Software are BIOS program, Operating
System, utilitiy programs, and programming languages.

2. Application Software - Includes programs that do real work for users.

Examples of
application software are word processing,
spreadsheets,
databases, accounting, games and internet browser.

Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to
operate and interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary,
devices are necessary to convert our input into that language. The binary code coming
out of the computer must also be translated into something usable for the operator.

Meaning Of Open Source OS

An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks,

allocates storage and presents a default interface to the user between applications. But

this OS is free, user have the right to use, modify and redistribute the software for better

interoperability.

Examples of Open Source OS

Linux

Linux is very similar to other operating systems, such as Windows and OS X.Linux is

developed collaboratively, meaning no one company is solely responsible for its

development or ongoing support. Companies participating in the Linux economy share

research and development costs with their partners and competitors.

MINIX 3

MINIX 3 is a new open-source operating system designed to be highly reliable, flexible,

and secure. It is loosely based somewhat on previous versions of MINIX, but is

fundamentally different in many key ways. MINIX 1 and 2 were intended as teaching

tools; MINIX 3 adds the new goal of being usable as a serious system on resource-

limited and embedded computers and for applications requiring high reliability.
The Latest Open Source Application Software

Meaning Of Open Source Application Software

Open Source Application Software (also called as end-user programs) includes

database programs, word processors, and spreadsheets. It is free to use, change, and

improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

Examples Of Open Source Application Software

OpenOffice

OpenOffice is an office application set (for word processing, spreadsheet manipulation,

picture drawing and data base access) compatible with all other major office application

sets such as Office and available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other

UNIX systems.

Firefox

Firefox is a web client program (for viewing and hearing web pages) available for

Windows and Mac as well as Linux and other UNIX systems.

Adobephotoshop CS4

Photoshop CS4 features a new 3D engine allowing painting directly on 3D

models, wrapping 2D images around 3D shapes, converting gradient maps to 3D

objects, adding depth to layers and text, getting print-quality output with the new ray-

tracing rendering engine. It supports common 3D formats; the new Adjustment and

Mask Panels; Content-aware scaling (seam carving); Fluid Canvas Rotation and File

display options. On 30 April, Adobe released Photoshop CS4 Extended, which includes

all the same features of Adobe Photoshop CS4 with the addition of capabilities for

scientific imaging, 3D, and high end film and video users. The successor to Photoshop

CS3, Photoshop CS4 is the first 64-bit Photoshop on consumer computers (only on

Windows – the OS X version is still 32-bit only.)

Adobephotoshop CS3

New features propagating productivity include streamlined interface, improved

Camera Raw, better control over print options, enhanced PDFsupport, and better

management with Adobe Bridge. Editing tools new to CS3 are the Clone Source palette

and nondestructive Smart Filters, and other features such as the brightness and

contrast adjustment and Vanishing Point module were enhanced. The Black and White

adjustment option improves control over manual grayscale conversions with a dialog

box similar to that of Channel Mixer. Compositing is assisted with Photoshop's new

Quick Selection and Refine Edge tools and improved image stitching technology.

CS3 Extended contains all features of CS3 plus tools for editing and importing some 3D

graphics file formats, enhancing video, and comprehensive image analysis tools,

utilizing MATLAB integration and DICOM file support.

Pervasive Computing

Meaning of Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name

for the movement is ubiquitous computing), connected computing devices in the

environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic -

and particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices

are not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible -

devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including

cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating

through increasingly interconnected networks. According to Dan Russell, director of the

User Sciences and Experience Group at IBM's Almaden Research Center, by 2010

computing will have become so naturalized within the environment that people will not

even realize that they are using computers. Russell and other researchers expect that in

the future smart devices all around us will maintain current information about their

locations, the contexts in which they are being used, and relevant data about the users.

Examples of Pervasive Computing

Blackberry

BlackBerry functions as a Personal Digital Assistant with address book, calendar

and to-do list capabilities. It also functions as aportable media player with support for

music and video playback and camera picture and video capabilities. BlackBerry is
primarily known for its ability to send and receive (push) Internet e-mail wherever mobile

network service coverage is present, or through Wi-Ficonnectivity. BlackBerry is mainly

a messaging phone with the largest array of messaging features in a Smartphone

today. This includes auto-text, auto-correct, text prediction, support for many languages,

keyboard shortcuts, text emoticons, push email,

push Facebook andMyspace notifications, push Ebay notifications, push instant

messaging with BlackBerry Messenger, Google Messenger, ICQ, Windows Live

messenger and Yahoo Messenger; threaded text messaging and a customizable

indicator light near the top right of all Blackberry devices. All notifications and

conversations from applications are shown in a unified messaging application which

third party applications can access also. Many of these applications would have to be

running in the background of other phones to be used. BlackBerry's push gives

BlackBerry devices their renowned battery life. All data on the phone is compressed

through BIS. BlackBerry has about two thirds less data transfer than any other

smartphone[2], while supplying the same information.

Iphone

An iPhone functions as a camera phone, including text messaging and visual

voicemail, a portable media player, and an Internet client, with e-mail,web browsing,

and Wi-Fi connectivity. The user interface is built around the device's multi-

touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one. Third-party

applications are available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has

well over 200,000 "apps" approved by Apple. These apps have diverse functionalities,
including games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, and advertising for

television shows, films, and celebrities.

Conclusion

Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so

users

are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or

unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can

interact

with computers. Human beings had easier life of living after the world had been through

ICT Modernization. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the

computer

will grant your wish.
