Ceradocus adangensis, a new species (Crustacea, Amphipoda,

Maeridae) from coral reefs of the Andaman Sea

Abstract A new species of maerid Amphipoda, Ceradocus
adangensis, collected from the coral reef at Adang Island in
the Andaman Sea, is described. C. adangensis is characterized
by its male large gnathopod 2 palm oblique with a
subrectangular distomedial elevation with 5 robust setae,
deeply cleft telson, telsonic lobes separated, each lobe with 4
apical robust setae and telsonic lobes not reaching halfway
along the longest spine. The new species is compared with
related species.
(Krapp-Schickel 2009). Of the 40 valid species, only
C. mizani Lim, Azman and Othman, 2010 and
C . a n d a m a n e n s i s Wo n g k a m h a e n g , C o l e m a n a n d
Pholpunthin, 2013 have been recorded from the Peninsula
of Malaysia. The former was collected from the eastern
coast of Malaysia and the latter from the Andaman Sea of
Thailand (Lim et al. 2010; Wongkamhaeng et al. 2013).
Here, a second species from the Andaman Sea is described.

Introduction
The genus Ceradocus Costa, 1853 is circumtropical. Hav-
ing previously been recorded from the tropics to the Medi-
terranean, its species are marine, but a few species have
been found in freshwater and brackish environments

Amphipods were collected by hand in a coral reef from
the islands of Adang and Phetra in Satun Province of
Thailand (Fig. 1). The sites were visited at low tide and
amphipods were collected from the subtidal zone. Sedi-
ment was strained with a 0.5 mm sieve. Amphipods were
sorted and fixed in formalin for 1 week and then stored in
70 % ethanol. In the laboratory, specimens were examined
using a compound microscope. Dissected appendages
were immersed in glycerol and mounted on non-
permanent slides. Material was transferred into small
glass tubes and kept with the specimens. The appendages
were drawn using a Olympus CH30 light microscope with
a camera lucida. Descriptions were generated from a
World Ceradocus DELTA database (Dallwitz 2005) and
illustrations were made using the methods described in
Coleman (2003). The following abbreviations are used:
