AN APPEAL

Greetings of Peace from St. Peter Church, Barkur.
The Barkur church dedicated to Apostle Peter, an architectural marvel in the Diocese of Udupi is of
historic significance. This Gothic styled Church was built by Msgr. Denis J. D’Souza and was dedicated by
the then Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, Rt. Rev. Paul Perini. This magnificent structure around a century
old has weathered the passage of time. It is our responsibility to preserve this historic Church for future
generations. A total refurbishment is the absolute need of the hour. Our consultants estimated the cost of
this project to be around Rs.1.25 crores. The Govt. of Karnataka having evaluated it’s historical significance
has proactively considered our appeal for financial aid and sanctioned Rs.50 Lakhs, for which we are ever
grateful. We hope to generate the remaining funds from our generous parishioners, well-wishers and
donors..
The works that need urgent attention are:
 Roofing : Complete repair of the wooden components of the roof and façade that is affected
by the monsoon.
 Flooring : The mosaic tiles laid in the main section of the Church in 1954 have to be replaced
as per expert opinion.
 Electrical : Total revamping of Electrical work and installation of two big screens for the
benefit of the faithful in the side naves.
 Plastering/Painting : Plastering wherever necessary and complete painting.

 Woodwork : Replacement of doors and windows wherever necessary.

 Furniture : To furnish and provide much needed pews and kneelers.
 Sound : Upgradation of the sound system.
The Parish Assembly has decided to commence the work in October 2018, after the monsoon season.
We may require around 6 to 8 months to complete the above works and hope to rededicate the Church by
April, 2019.
We place this appeal before you for your kind consideration and support. Contributions may be made
individually or through associations. You are welcome to either sponsor the cost of any of the above
specific scope of work or donate to the common fund. Contributions in instalments are also most welcome.
It may not be out of place to mention here that, donations from Indians with foreign citizenship are not
allowed as per Indian Government Rules & Regulations. However, they may donate in the name of their
