MATHEMATICAL SWING

 Date : Tuesday, October 12th 2010

 Objective : a. To understand mathematical swing principal and plain harmonic

movement.
b. To understand the earth gravity acceleration.
c. Determine the earth gravity acceleration on the experiment place.

 Equipment : a. Mathematical swing tool

b. Stopwatch
c. Ruler

 Basic Theory

Thing with the mass m

suspended with a rope (the rope's
mass equal zero) with deviation
angle q (very little) then release. The
thing will swing to and fro where the
direction always to the balance point.
The very little deviation angle and
the air friction is negligent, so that
movement called plain harmonic
movement with recovered force.

(1.1)

The deviation equation of

plain harmonic movement can be
evident with:

(1.2)
And according to the Second Newton Law, recovered force at the plain
harmonic movement is:

(1.3)

For the very little angle , ( , with substitute to (1.1),

and use (1.3), will become:

(1.4)

 Steps :
1. Arrange the tool
2. String the rope on stativity
3. Measure the length of rope
4. Hung the load on rope
5. Repeat the experiment number 3 and 4 with m 1=100 g , m2=200 g, and the
length of rope is different.
