# U2L3: Plant Growth Lab

Background: Factors in the plant’s environment, such as the amount of sunlight and water, play a role in
the health and life span of a plant. Green plants need sunlight to carry out photosynthesis. This process
allows the plant to make food that can be used later for growth and reproduction. Without light, the
plant cannot make food, and it cannot grow. This experiment will demonstrate whether or not light is
needed for a plant to grow.

Hypothesis: My Hypothesis is that if a plant has the needed light it will thrive while if a plant is kept in a
dark area it will not.

The independent variable in this lab is: The independent variable in this lab is the sunlight.

The dependent variable in the lab that I am measuring is: The dependent variable in the lab that I am
measuring is the plant.

Materials List:

 Soil

 6 bean Seed

 6 flower pots

Online Materials

##  Online plant growth website

 Paper
 Pen

Procedure: List the steps below of how to do this experiment. Add as many steps as needed.

## 1. Set three flower pot in a room was lots of light

2. Then set the other three flower pot in a dark area
4. Dig a hole in the soil and plant the bean seeds
5. After water each six flower pots with 50ml of water
6. Than record the height and the mass every 5 days for a month
Try using a few plants for Length of the Plant (in centimeters)
each group.

Plants L1 0.0 cm 3.9 cm 10.0 cm 16.7cm 22.1cm 27.9cm Plant L1 was bright green and healthy
in the Bean and smaller than L3 but bigger than L2.

L2 0.0 cm 2.7 cm 8.4 cm 14.7cm 19.9cm 25.9cm Plant L2 was bright green and healthy
Bean but a little shorter and had less mass
Mass: 0.0 g 0.4 g 1.1 g 2.0 g 2.6 g 3.4 g than the others.

L3 0.0 cm 3.9 cm 10.3 cm 17.1cm 28.8cm 28.6cm Plant L3 was bright green and healthy.
Bean It also was the tallest and had the most

dark Mass: 0.0 g 0.1 g 0.2 g 0.3 g 0.3 g 0.4 g was smaller than plant D2.

D2 0.0 cm 4.6 cm 12.4 cm 19.8cm 23.7cm 27.4 cm Plant D2 was grey and brittle with no
Bean leaves. It was the largest of the three

D3 0.0 cm 2.4 cm 10.5 cm 18.4cm 22.2cm 25.9 cm Plant D3 was grey and brittle with no
Bean leaves. It had the smallest mass and
Mass: 0.0 g 0.0 g 0.1 g 0.3 g 0.3 g 0.4 g was the shortest.

Conclusions:
What is/are the main factor(s) that determine(s) that your plants will grow into bean plants
(or other fast-growing plants that you used for your experiment) and not some other type of
plant (genetics, environment, or both)? Explain your answer. The main factor that makes the
bean plant not turn into another type of plant is because all the seeds have the same genetic
makeup and also have a controlled environment.

What is/are the main factor(s) that determine(s) the height of a plant (genetics, environment,
or both)? Explain your answer. The main factors that determine the height of the plant is both
the genetics and the environment because some bean plant have a genetic makeup of having a
shorter gene while others have a taller gene. The environment also is an important factor
because the plant needs a certain amount of light, soil and water.
Use specific data from your experiment to defend or refute the following statements: Plants
continue to grow throughout their lives by producing new plant material. Photosynthesis is
required for this process to occur. This researcher agree with the statement that plants
continue to grow throughout their lives by producing new plants material. Photosynthesis is
required for this process to occur because the results of the experiment show the bean plants
with the light are healthier, have more mass and produce leaves while the bean plants that
have no light have height but have little mass and are extremely unhealthy. For example plant
L3 was 28.6 cm tall with a mass of 3.8g while plant D2 had the height of 27.4 cm but only has
the mass of 0.4g as shown by the images below.
