ASSIGNMENT NO 2
Q1)

Q2) Many industrial processes employ ac motors. Consider a motor that draws a power of
10KVA, pf=0.866 lagging from a 50Hz, 1-phase pure sine wave supply at 220V.
a) Find the real and reactive power consumed by this motor.
b) Find an expression for the instantaneous power containing a DC component and a
single sinusoidal term
A second motor is now connected to the system that draws a power of 7.07KVA, pf=0.707
lagging
c) What is the total apparent power drawn from the system and the expression for
instantaneous phase current ia(t) if va(t) is taken with reference phase 0o.
d) The second motor is connected through a device built at LUMS SSE that can advance
the phase of voltage by δo . Find the value of total P, Q and S drawn from the system
for:
i. δ=90o
ii. δ=180o
Power Electronics Due Date: 5:00pm. 17-OCT-2018.
Q3) Following circuit is designed to drive a high intensity lamp (small resistance) through a
thyristor with reverse recovery time tq=10μs. Vin is a square wave source 0V – 20V, 50Hz,
D=50%. Trigger circuit generates a suitable gate pulse to turn the thyristor on whenever
its input reaches an internally set
threshold voltage of 10V. Capacitor
C=1μF. Assume the diode to be ideal

a) Draw the equivalent circuit when

thyristor is not conducting and use it to
find the expression for time it takes to
trigger the thyristor

b) Design suitable range of R for this

circuit

c) Derive the expression for average voltage across the lamp in terms of R.
d) How high can the frequency of input source be increased for this circuit to still be able
to control the average output voltage?

Q4) Consider a SIDO (Single Inductor Dual Output) converter as illustrated below. A non-
overlapping switching scheme for operation is with switch Sa closed for DaTS, Sb closed
for DbTS and Sc closed for DcTS. Assuming ideal behavior for all switches, small ripples
and steady state operation in CCM:

a) Find the conversion ratios Ma(D) and Mb(D) for this converter.
b) Draw the inductor current waveform
c) Find the inductor ripple current ΔiL and capacitor voltage ripples Δva and Δvb.
Power Electronics Due Date: 5:00pm. 17-OCT-2018.
Q5) The following diagram shows a converter to be analyzed

a) Realize the switches using SPST ideal switches.

b) The converter is to be operated in CCM. Find the expressions for inductor currents and
capacitor voltages and find the conversion ratio M(D).
c) State how the switches can be realized.
d) Find the expressions for inductor current ripple.

Note: There will be no extension in the deadline. Manage your things accordingly.
