Filipino Values

1. Utang na Loob – Norm of reciprocity to repay a person who have extended help to another.
2. Filial Piety - To be good to one's parents to maintain the collective face of the family.
3. Padrino System – The value system where one gains favor, promotion, or political
appointment through family affiliation or friendship.
4. Suki – This may develop between two people who agree to become regular customer and
supplier in which loyalty and relationship bear more importance in business than profit.
5. Bahala Na – Filipino trait characterized by withdrawing from certain undertaking and leaving
everything to the “spirits” to interfere and determine the outcome of his deeds.
6. Mañana Habit – Known as “tomorrow” in English, the habit encourages delaying or setting
aside a certain task assigned on the next day although it can be done today.
7. Ningas Cogon - Filipino cultural trait of enthusiastically starting things, but then quickly
losing enthusiasm soon after.
8. Amor Propio – This means self-love or a sense of self-respect that prevents a person from
swallowing his pride.
9. Hospitality - The quality of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly,
generous way.

10. Hiya (Walang Hiya) - Value that regulates the Filipinos social behavior and drives a
Filipino to be obedient and respectful to their parents, older siblings, and other authorities.
11. Filipino Time - behind or hours behind the standard time
12. Respect for Elders - use of words “po,” “opo,” and “ho” when they are conversing with
older people or those who are in a a prestigious member of society
