MUED 303
A. Objectives
B. Procedures
2. The teacher will then do a call-and-response with the student with different “wind
patterns”.
• “Say ‘M&M’”
• “Frown”
• “Say ‘Oh’”
4. The teacher will place the mouthpiece on the embouchure for the student and the student
will buzz.
5. The student will then demonstrate how to do a “roller coaster” and a “siren”.
• If the student has trouble with doing “sirens” and “roller coasters”, the teacher will
review how to change pitches with the buzz. (Firmer corners and faster air)
6. After the teacher played a Bb on a piano, the teacher will ask the student to sing the Bb
scale on a “du” syllable and then the student will buzz the Bb scale. (Don’t move on to
the buzzing part until the student can sing the Bb scale.)
C. Assessment
Assessment during this lesson will be completely informal. The teacher will be
monitoring the student’s progress and catering the information so the student has the best
D. Reflection
Although we didn't get to go on to play the Bb scale, the student made great progress on
being able to produce a good tone on the mouthpiece and to be able to change pitch on the
mouthpiece. From the pre-test, I remember how much trouble Christian had trying to change
pitch and it was really rewarding to work with the student and to see him drastically improve was
amazing. At first, he didn’t have a middle range on the tuba so he either hit a really low note or
shot up way too high. I think he was able to get so much better because I was also buzzing on my
tuba mouthpiece and I was able to explain the buzzing mechanics to him and demonstrate it to
him at the same exact time. For my next lesson, I plan on reviewing and reinforcing the concepts
