African culture: Very eclectic and vibrant culture expressed in arts, folklore, clothing, cusine,
music, and language.

Main African tribes:


 Afar
 Anlo-Ewe
 Amhara
 Ashanti
 Bakongo

African religions:
 Christianity
 Islam

African Languages:
 Afro-Asiatic
 Nilo-Saharan
 Niger-Congo
 Khoisan

Five words that teachers need to know in the 1st language:


1. Habari- Hello
2. Kwaheri- Goodbye
3. Karibu- Welcome
4. Ndio- Yes
5. Hapana- No

Geographical/ historical/ economic facts:


1. The African continent has the 2nd largest population in the world- one billion people
2. African has the worlds largest desert (Sahara) and the worlds longest river (Nile).
3. Africa is posed to have the largest labor force in the world.

Important contributions of African culture:


1. With the continents diversity within African they now how to coexist
2. Great value and appreciation put into their elders who came before them
3. Hard working mindsets which is responsible for creating the largest labor force

Important people:
1. Nelson Mandela (leader who helped free his nation from Apartheid).
2. Desmond Tutu (winner of the Noble Peace Prize- renowned religious leader).
Personal Characteristics-
1. Africa has a rich tradition of arts and crafts- expresses important parts of Africa’s history
2. African clothing- vibrant colors are used to show Africa’s traditional roots
3. African cuisine- shows religion differences

 This culture is complex, knowing this information will give insight to this group and as a
teacher it will further help your journey of teaching a student from this culture.
 Having this knowledge on this cultures background is a sign of respect while having parent-
teachers, teacher-student interactions.
 A student with African literacy and language experiences will give depth to the student but
with the dramatic differences in the language will make it hard to adjust. No Latin roots in
the different African dialects.
 Hands on instructional practice will further benefit these students the most.
 Allowing for fellow classmates to have an understanding of the students culture who is
immersed in it at home by presenting a project where everyone brings in a piece of their
culture to the classroom.
