Snare Sub-Sectional Lesson Plan


Goals:
• Members will warm up using packet exercises.
• Members will demonstrate their memorized performance of Russian Sailor’s Dance
(mm. 41-78) through performance and identification of musical passages.
• Members will play through isolated sections with the intent to clean and unify sound.

Procedure:
1. Warm Up (10 minutes)
a. Play Legato Tap
i. 120, 150, and 170 BPM
ii. 3 repetitions per tempo
b. Play Buttered Rolls
i. 130 and 160 BPM
ii. 2 repetitions per tempo
c. Play P-Diddy
i. 80, 90, and 100 BPM
ii. 1 repetition per tempo
d. Play Dirty Diddles
i. 130 and 144 BPM
ii. 1 repetition per tempo
e. Play Flamberry Jam
i. 100 and 114 BPM
ii. 1 repetition per tempo
2. Reading exercise
a. Members will play measure 41 through 78 of Russian Sailor’s Dance with sheet
music.
i. First repetition: All play
ii. Second Repetition:
1. Center 3 members play through the first rehearsal mark (mm. 47).
2. Add 2 members every new rehearsal mark until everyone is
playing.
3. Subtract 2 players from the outside each rehearsal mark until the
end of the passage.
4. When members are not playing, they should mark time and sing
the melody.
5. This process can be repeated starting with outside players and
adding inward.
3. Memorization Test
a. Members will play measure 41 through 78 of Russian Sailor’s Dance without
sheet music.
i. First Repetition: All Play
ii. Pause to look at sheet music for 30 seconds.
iii. Second Repetition: All Play
iv. Ask individual or pairs of members to identify and play passages starting
at various rehearsal markings from memory.
4. Cleaning
a. Members will play through isolated sections of the music
i. Musical sections will be chosen based on the memorization test.
b. Example: mm. 53-59
i. This section of the music is a paradiddle-based passage.
ii. Isolate the stickings by removing all accents and playing at a slower
tempo.
iii. Play through the passage with only accented notes
iv. Play mm. 53 through the third beat of mm. 54 on loop to solidify the
pattern.
v. Build the passage up to tempo from 130 BPM.
Assessment:
• Memorization
o Can the player perform the passage individually and with the group in full
without memory slips?
o Can the player identify and perform musical concepts in the passage such as
smaller sections and isolated exercises derived from the music?
• Participation
o Does the player active engage in the rehearsal through playing, asking questions,
and assisting other members in learning?

Extensions:
• Sing the melody of a musical passage individually or with a group while another player
plays the part.
• Create and demonstrate an exercise that derives from a musical passage

Accommodations:
• Break into groups of 3 to work on memorizing a specific section of music.
• Play through a section at a slower tempo.
• Isolate and rehearse a musical passage by playing an exercise that derives from the
musical concepts within the passage.
