Course Objectives:
The studio aims to explore design fundamentals and bye-laws for designing Housing projects in urban
areas integrating allied disciplines of architectural field like landscape, environment, cost effective
technologies and energy conservation etc. to provide a holistic approach indeed.

Pre-requisites:
Understanding developed from previous Architectural Design exercises and theoretical base provided
by theory courses.

Module I : Introduction

Concept of housing and neighborhood design, its importance and principles in mass
housing schemes, site planning principles; housing typologies in urban areas, housing

standards, housing infrastructure, housing policies and financial schemes, housing
demand and supply, concept of housing assessment, post occupancy studies, Space
optimization and functional case.

Module II: Housing Design Process

Design development through different progressive stages include – Site zoning and
layout, design area brief, dwelling unit types, building plans, housing cluster planning,
neighborhood concept, physical and social infrastructure facilities, housing utilities. 60 %
Inferences from case studies of public/government/private/cooperative housing
schemes, its need, advantages and disadvantages and execution process. Necessary
working drawings and estimation of the proposed project for feasibility.

Module III: Design Intervention


Development of design through – cost effective technologies, energy conservation
techniques, latest and upcoming construction techniques, Social and economic factors

influencing housing design, affordability, social housing concepts – slum upgrading and
sites &services schemes.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


Tutorial and studio based learning with live and literature case studies.

Student Learning Outcomes:


The student will demonstrate knowledge of architectural design for housing projects/schemes and
application of building bye-laws for group housing. The students will analyze the housing schemes in
urban area, along with necessary infrastructure, services and amenities.
