Reflection on lesson:
For my reading lesson plan I taught about main idea, theme, and characters. I actually
really liked teaching this lesson because it was interactive so the children were engaged.
For teacher input I did a read aloud with the book The Secret Olivia Told Me which was the
perfect book because it explicitly said the theme of the book. After I read the book I asked
my students what did they notice and some of my students comments were I noticed the
ballon got bigger and bigger and another student asked why and she said because it
represented the secret and since the friend kept telling more and more people the secret
which is the ballon got bigger. Some of my teachers positive comments about the teacher
input and guided practice were that I used a mentor text, the use of a game to get them up,
the game reiterated the theme of the mentor text, assigned jobs and time limit, students
had to signal completion with putting their heads down on their desk, and clapping to signal
I wanted students attention. Some of the constructive feedback was to stop during the read
aloud and ask students what they notice, and prior to beginning the lesson reinforce what
main idea and theme are. I loved my wrap up. I use to not know what the closure part of the
lesson plan was but know I love the closures because I get to do something fun with the
students that is interactive.
The students would take turns reading one page. After each of them read a page I would ask
them for the main idea of the 2 pages to make sure they understand what they are reading.I
would also if they misread a word ask them to reread that sentence or word. We also looked up
one of the vocabulary words that they did not understand which was appendicitis. After they
answered a question I would ask them where in the passage did you find that answer. For
example one of my questions was why is his tummy hurting. The intended outcome of the
activity is for the students to read the chalet go over any vocabulary that they do not understand
and to answers the question for comprehension. We only got through chapter 4 so we could not
answer every question but the questions we could answer they both got right. One student said
the wrong answer at first and the other student said that’s not right and showed him where in
the passage the right answer was. This was a really short lesson because the students were
distracted because the other students were playing Kahoot with the sub.
