Prayer Shawls – Crochet, Knit and Fleece

Crochet Triangle Prayer Shawls


For: St. Elizabeth Hospital
Patients: End of Life
Date: October 2018
Materials: Yarn

Hook Size: G (or whatever works for you to


obtain 5 feet by 23 inch triangle)

Yarn: 4 Ply Yarn

Wash and Block

DISCLAIMER – you can make this shawl however you would like to make it so you can use 1 strand of
yarn, 2 strands of yarn, large needles/hooks or smaller needles/hooks, any color is fine, 2 strands of
baby yarn are fine, just get it close to the recommended size for the triangle of 5 feet by 23 inches.

Chain 229 stitches

Row 1: Begin in the 4th chain from hook, the first 3 chain stitches counts and 1 DC, 1 DC in the next 2
stitches, (Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 DC in each of next 3 stitches) repeat across.

Row 2: 1 Slip Stitch in each of the next 3 stitches and slip stitch into the chain 1 space

(Chain 3, 2 DC) in the same Chain 1 space;

(Chain 1, skip the next 3 stitches, 3 DC in the next Chain 1 space) repeat across

To the last 3 DC of the row, skip the last 3 DC, turn

Row 5: (1 slip stitch in each of the next 3 stitches, 1 slip stitch into the chain 1 space) two times

(Chain 3, 2 DC) in the same Chain 1 space;

(Chain 1, skip the next 3 stitches, 3 DC in the next Chain 1 space) repeat across

To the last 7 stitches; turn

Row 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24-33, 35, 36, 38, 39: Repeat Row 2

Row 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 34, 37: Repeat Row 5

Row 40: 1 slip stitch in each of the next 3 stitches and 1 slip stitch into the chain 1 space,

(Chain 3, 2 DC) in the same chain 1 space, skip the last 3 DC, finish off and weave in all ends.
Knit Triangle Prayer Shawls

Use 4 ply yarn.

Use size 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 size needles, circular needles 36 inch or size to obtain required look based on
your tension

Cast on 3

Row 1: Knit 1, Knit into front and back of next stitch, knit to end. (4 stitches)

Repeat: Knit 1 and increase in next stitch, knit to end until you reach 5 feet.

Cast off using your normal method.

This length of the shawl is


about 5 feet at its longest
length.

Start here with 3 stitches

Between the bottom point of the


shawl and the middle of the 5 foot
length, it should be about 23 inches.

 Do not knot the fringe
 Cut a perimeter fringe 3” long x 1” wide
 Optional: Embroider the word “Love” on

o A piece of 3’ x 5’ Fleece

Construction

 Pick the fabric and style of blanket


 No stuffing
 Washable
 Light weight
 Cheerful colors
 Turn under all seams

Yarn

 You can knit or crochet


 You can use one or two strands
 You can use 4 ply or a combination of yarns
 Combine 2 4 ply yarns and that is about the maximum of weight for a 3’ x 5’ blanket
 Washable
 Put a border around it if pattern has raw edges

Fleece
 1 thickness, no knots, 3 inch fringe if you want or serge the edges

Crochet Infant Hat

Materials: Baby Yarn

 Materials – Washable Baby Yarn


 Crochet Hook - H
 The seam sewn in this hat will not produce a ridge.
 For smaller sizes decrease the number of initial chain stitches

Using H Hook Chain 37. Work in back loops only. You will be doing short rows to make the crown.

Row 1: Chain 37, single crochet in second chain from hook and in each chain across. Turn

Row 2 and 4: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across leaving the last 3 stitches unworked – Turn

Row 3 and 5: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across and turn

Row 6: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across, *single crochet in the end of the row below and in
the next unworked stitch together, single crochet in each of the next 2 unworked stitches* perform
from * to * again. Turn

Row 7: Chain 2 and single crochet in each stitch and turn.

Row 8 – Row 66: Repeat rows 2-7 ending on a Row 6.

Cut yarn and leave about 24 inches to sew the seam

Do not add a tassel, bows or any embellishments.

Knit Infant Hat

Materials: Baby Yarn

 Materials – Washable Baby Yarn


 Knitting Needles – Double Pointed or Circular Needles Size 5
 Knitting Needles Size 6 for larger hat
 A seam is not desired for the application of this hat.

Using Size 5 Double Pointed Needles Cast On 72 Stitches distribute evenly among needles to knit in
round. In this example Knit On Cast On was used but you can use K2 P2 Cast On.

K2 P2 ribbing for 2.5 inches or about 20 rows


Knit in the round for 4 more inches

Start decrease as follows:

K4, K2 tog, repeat through round


K 1 row
K3, K2tog, repeat through round
K 1 row
K2, K2 tog, repeat through round
K 1 row
K1, K2 tog, repeat through round
K 1 row
K2 tog through round

Pull yarn through remaining stitches, weave in remaining yarn and fasten off.
Do not add pompoms, tassel, bows or any embellishments.
Wash and block hat. The hospital will sanitize hat. You do not have to bag the hats separately.

Knit Infant Mitts

Materials: Baby Yarn

 Materials – Washable Baby Yarn


 Knitting Needles – Double Pointed or Circular Needles Size 4 and Size 5
 For larger size mitts use Size 5 for rib and Size 6 for the rest of the mitt
 A seam is not desired for application of these mitts.

Directions – Make 2

Using Size 4 Needles Cast On 30 Stitches in the round on double pointed needles or circular needles.
Use the cast on method of your choice. The Knit On Cast On was used for this example.

Row 1 – 5: Using Size 4 Needles for 5 Rows K1 P1 Rib Change to Size 5 Needles.

Row 6, 7 and Rows 9 -23: Knit in the round

Row 8 – (K2 together, Yarn Over) across row – this eyelet row will be used for gathering

Row 24 – (K3, K2 together) repeat all the way around

Rows 25, 27, 29 – Knit

Row 26 – (K2, K2 together) repeat all the way around

Row 28 – (K1, K2 together) repeat all the way around

Row 30 – (K2 together) repeat all the way around – You will have 6 stitches left.

Cut yarn leaving an 8 inch tail. Use sewing needle to pull yarn through all 6 loops pull to tighten. Bring
yarn through to the inside of the mitt. Turn mitt inside out. Secure with knot and weave in the loose
end. Wash and block each mitt. The hospital will sanitize each mitt and add the tie to the mitt.
