PRACTICE PROBLEMS (Incompressible Flow)

1-1) A large elevated tank is used to supply water at 50oF to a spray chamber. To ensure proper
atomization of the fluid, a pressure of at least 40 psig at the nozzle inlet must be maintained to
deliver the required 150 gal/min. The line from the tank is 2-in sch. 40 steel pipes. In addition to
its vertical run, the line has 10-ft horizontal section and contains four 90 o elbows and one gate
valve. What is the minimum height above the spray nozzle at which the liquid level in the tank
must be maintained?

1-2) Pressure in a storage tank is maintained at 1 MN/m 2 to supply water at 20 oC and atmospheric
pressure through 200 m (equivalent length, including fittings) of drawn steel tubing (30 mm OD,
2.6 mm wall thickness). What flow rate of water can be maintained?

1-3) A liquid with specific gravity of 2.6 and viscosity of 2.0 cP flows through a smooth pipe of
unknown diameter, resulting in a pressure drop of 0.183 lb f/in2 for 1.73 mi. What is the pipe
diameter in inches if the mass flow rate of flow is 7,000 lb/h?

1-4) Water flowing at a rate of 80 gpm through 50 ft of an annular conduit made of ½ -in and 1¼-in
schedule 40 steel pipes. What is the pressure drop (in psi) within the line? Assume, as average
properties, a density of 62.3 lb/ft3 and a viscosity of 0.88 cP.
