Abstract

This undergraduate research paper, Exploring Beyond Imagination: The

Significance of Pagkamalikhain to Lopez Community is focuses on determining the
significance of creativity in Lopez community that aims to contribute in the
improvements of PNU SL offering BTLE courses, identify the economic activities
related to BTLE in Barangay Mal-ay and determine what creativity can do in their
improvements. Using descriptive survey, this study counted on the data from the
PNU SL stakeholders and the data from the selected residents of Barangay Mal-ay
with the aid of data-gathering and interview guides. After analyzing the data from
multiple sources, conclusions include: Creativity aids in teaching BTLE courses,
helps business owners in finding solution to different problems and in satisfying the
costumer’s needs. Also, creativity is significant in the improvement of economic
activities of Barangay because it attracts more costumers, offers new designs for
the woodcraft business, brings new information that can be adapted in business,
adds attraction and recreation, helps in securing business services and contributes
in strategizing the business through innovating ideas from different sources.
Recommendations toward students, faculty and business owners are forwarded.

Keywords: Significance, Creativity and Beyond Imagination

Introduction

Absence of creativity has been existing ever since in the world history. During the
medieval period, the people lacked creativity and only used the mechanisms that were
created by the generations before. Violence helped noblemen rise to define themselves
while the creative ones took generations to build a cathedral because they only cared about
glorifying God (brightkite.com). Similarly, some of the poorest countries in Asia are poor
because they lack creativity and inventions that help them to have convenient living. Also,
Filipinos are lack of creativity because of being known as great imitator. From the National
local level, problems in recognizing creativity brought to sluggish progress of the economy.
Thoroughly, creativity is defined as "the ability to produce work that is both novel (i.e.,
original, unexpected) and appropriate (i.e., useful, adaptive concerning task constraints)"
(Sternberg and Lubart, 1999). According to Oxford Dictionary, “significance is the quality
of being worthy of attention; importance”. Moreover, bounteous attention to creativity can
lead to more inventions and discoveries that is useful human civilization.

In line with this, A 2012 Adobe study on creativity shows 8 in 10 people feel that
unlocking creativity is critical to economic growth and nearly two-thirds of respondents
feel creativity is valuable to society, yet a striking minority – only 1 in 4 people – believe
they are living up to their own creative potential.

Furthermore, the 1987 Philippine Constitution Article IV Section 3 (2) states that
“They shall encourage critical and creative thinking. However, the lack of recognition of
creativity within policy documentation, may prompt professionals to create pedagogic
routines, boundaries and timetables which obscure the personal, affective and creative
dimensions of teaching and learning, fostering ‘a mind-set characterized more by
compliance and conformity than curiosity and creativity’ (Cremin, 2010:19)

A literature review undertaken during the 2009 European Year of Creativity and
Innovation (Ferrari et al., 2009) offered a rationale for creative learning and innovative
teaching across the European Union as a core element in the development of the 21st
century knowledge society contributing to economic prosperity and also individual and
social well-being. Similarly, IBM’s 2010 Global CEO Study stated: The effects of rising
complexity calls for CEOs and their teams to lead with bold creativity, connect with
customers in imaginative ways and design their operations for speed and flexibility to
position their organizations for twenty-first century success.

Hence, this study serves as the validation or a proof on the importance of creativity
and aims to give solution to those people who haven’t recognized the significance of
creativity to their self and to the community that they belong. It will answer the question
how creativity can affect the development of Philippine Normal University students and
how it would affect to their school. Likewise, the upshot of this study can affect the
community of Barangay Mal-ay and the town of Lopez,Quezon . Having its result could
also have the impact to Province of Quezon and to the Philippines as well. From this
research, Asia and the World can use this as one of their references to gain information on
contributions of creativity in the development of one’s community.
A common view was that creative ability is something that only few people possess,
and that true creative performance can only be displayed by a small minority of people
(Sternberg &Lubart, 1999) This research paper “Exploring beyond imagination: The
Significance of Pagkamalikhain (Filipino Creativity) to Lopez Community” will open the
door of horizon to search on the far side of imagination.

Purpose
This study This Study threshed-out the significance of pagkamalikhain (Filipino
creativity) to Lopez community.
Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:
1. What are the significance of pagka-malikhain to PNU-SL offering of BTLE
course in terms of TLE?
2. What are the economic activities related to BTLE in Brgy. Mal-ay
Lopez,Quezon?
3. What can pagka-malikhain do to the improvement of the chosen barangay?

Methodology
This study counted on the data from the PNU SL stakeholders and residents of
Barangay Mal-ay using descriptive survey. For the purpose of this study, descriptive survey
provides information useful to the solutions of local issues (IJTBM, 2012). It attempts to
establish the range and distribution of some social characteristics, such as education or
training, occupation, and location, and to discover how these characteristics may be related
to certain behavior patterns or attitudes (Zurmuehlen, 1981). Hence, the descriptive survey
research method was adopted.

Sources of Data
The qualitative data were based on the responses of fourty-eight (48) PNU SL
students and twelve (12) faculty and personnel. Also, some data were based on the selected
residents of Barangay Mal-ay. The researchers used purposive sampling. Parahoo
(1997:232) describes purposive sampling as “a method of sampling where the researcher
deliberately chooses who to include in the study based on their ability to provide necessary
data.
Instruments
The instruments included the 1) Opinionnaire that contains of five statements
supported by the related literatures and 2) Interview Guide which compromises 18
questions patterned by five W’s and one H. The instruments had undergone the test of
validity through interactions between the researchers and the research professor. Similarly,
the instruments were given to the 5 selected students of PNU SL to test its reliability using
trial-run test.

Data Gathering Procedure

As to the interview, the researchers wrote a letter that was signed by their Research
Method I Adviser. The researchers went to the Barangay Captain of Mala-ay Honorable
Eriberta A. Rada for the approval of the permit to conduct an interview. Upon approval,
the researchers went to the barangay on August 3, 2017 and looked for the subjects who
are inclined in the activities related to TLE. The researchers had a house-to-house interview
to gather the data as to how pagkamalikhain becomes significant to their work with the
assistance of interview guide. As to the data in PNU SL stakeholders regarding on the
significance of pagkamalikhain in PNU SL offering BTLE course, the copy of opionnaires
were given by selected students and faculty.

2. The economic activities in Barangay Mal-ay Lopez, Quezon related to TLE.

A. Home Economics. Candies and banana chips making are the business related
to Home Economics in Barangay Mal-ay. The business is owned by Mrs.
Analyn Robedillo and was established on 1997. The business helps her family
specifically the education of her children. The business is located at Purok
Camia Brgy. Mal-ay Lopez, Quezon. The store opens and closes at 6:00 AM-
9:00 PM and is closed every Sunday. The owner’s husband manages the
business if the owner is not around. Moreover, their product reaches the town
of Gumaca, Lucena and Tagkawayan. The raw materials of their products are
from Lopez or Gumaca, Quezon. In 20 years of operation, the owner of the
business had encountered problems; one of these was the lack of supply of
banana every time that there are calamities like typhoon. To solve the problem
using creativity, they produce other products that can sell to the market like
“Bukayo and bagkat”. Aside from the calamities, the business has also
competitors from neighboring barangay which drives them to find other areas
where they can put and sell their products. Furthermore, the owner of the
business is lack of labor force. Their working area is not convenient or suitable
for the business. The packaging is good but can be improved. Since their
business is already known in the market and the profit is continuous, it would
be better if they will plan and allot money for the improvements of working
area. Also, they can improve the packaging where they can render service for
lay-outing their names that are attached in their products. Likewise, the addition
to their labor force will make more products that can be resulted to more
income.
B. Industrial Arts. Wood craft is the business related to Industrial Arts in
Barangay Mal-ay. The business is owned by Mr. Rodger Guita and was
established on 2007. The business helps her family specifically the education
of her children. The business is located at Purok Sampaguita Brgy. Mal-ay
Lopez, Quezon. The store opens and closes at 5:00 AM-8:00 PM. The owner’s
husband manages the business. Moreover, their product reaches the town of
Gumaca, Lucena, Bulacan, Bicol, and schools nearby the Barangay. The raw
materials of their products are from Lopez or Gumaca, Quezon. In 10 years of
operation, the owner of the business had encountered problems; one of these
was the lack of supply of woods. To solve the problem using creativity, they
produce other products that can sell to the other place. Aside from the lack of
raw materials encountered during calamities, the business has also competitors
from neighboring barangay that motivates them to be more artistic in designs
and lower the price of their products. However, the owner of the business has
lack of woods during calamities. The area where they make their products is
not convenient or suitable for the business. The packaging is good but can be
improved. As the business is already identified in wood craft business in their
areas and neighboring town, it is better if they make unique designs and hire a
person who has a talent in carving.
C. Agriculture. Piggery and duck farm is the business related to Agriculture in the
selected barangay. The business is owned by Mrs. Lovella Gendrano and was
established on 2007. The business helps her family. Specifically, the business is
situated at Brgy. Mal-ay Sitio Daisy Lopez,Quezon. The business opens and closes at
5:00 AM-7:30 PM and is closed during Christmas. The owner’s husband supervises
the business if the owner is not around. Furthermore, their product reaches near
barangays. The raw materials are coming from Victoria, Laguna. In 10 years of
operation, the owner of the business had encountered problems, one of these is the odor
of the pigs and ducks’ stool. Moreover, creativity aids them to yield more and find
solutions to the problems with regard to the business. The owner of the business spends
much money for the supply of the pigs and ducks even though there are dominant pigs
and ducks nearer from their location like in Brgy. San Vicente Gumaca Quezon and
Brgy. Sugod Lopez, Quezon. Thus, the farther the source of the ducks and pigs, the
higher the cost will be as the charge for transportation increases. Aside from having a
piggery and duck farm they also have a sari-sari store wherein it adds to their source
of income.Since the business owner spend much money for the supply of pigs and
ducks, it is, then favourable if they find another source nearer to them. In addition, the
owner and workers have to be creative in making strategies and creative in handling
the pigs and ducks because they are very sensitive.

D. Fisheries. Fishpond in barangay Mal-ay is the business related to Fisheries. The

business is owned by Mr. Armando Almase which started on 2002. It is located
at Brgy Mal-ay Lopez Quezon, this kind of business is beneficial for those
workers and care taker since the aim of the owner in establishing this kind of
business is to help other people and only as part of his leisure time. The Fish
Pond is open at 7 o’clock in the morning until 5 o’clock in the afternoon and its
close if there is an occasion like Christmas. If the owner is in important
appointment the caretaker is the person who facilitates the business. The species
that commonly found in the fish pond are crabs and milkfish which it is easy
for them to feed because of the organic food that they use. However, there is
one common problem in the business; the mortality of the fish and crabs. To
avoid the problem, they clean first the fish pond before putting new finger links
of species. Furthermore, the raw material is coming from their agent in
Gumaca, Vinzon and Daet . According to the owner, the significant of
pagkamalikhain in improving this kind of business are, if you are creative you
can easily maintain the fish pond and it will help you to become resourceful.
Also by doing this business, you can help other people by means of giving them
a job. Moreover, he decided to continue to work with that business to provide
him a leisure time and not just merely an income. In addition, the income goes
to the workers and to the maintenance of the pond.

E. ICT. Coliseum is the business related to ICT in Barangay Mal-ay. The business
is owned by Mr. Christian Lee and was established on 2000 which is inherited
from his parents. The owner’s aim is also to help or to render service to the
community of Mal-ay. This business is located in Barangay Mal-ay Lopez,
Quezon. The cockpit business opens at 11:00 am – 5:00. If the owner is not
around the wife operate the business. In 17 years of operation, there is always
a struggle that the owner’s encountered one of these is that those people who
had a bet but they do not have money on hand and tried to escape after the game.
However, creativity aids them to yield more and find solutions to the problems
with regard to the business because of putting CCTV and HD camera around
the arena. Furthermore, the owner of the business chooses this kind of business
because it gives big income to his family. Also, the business renders service to
the community of Mal-ay and provides leisure time to his costumers. In putting
up a business, problem is and will always be part of a business but this despite
of it, creativity yields solution to this. By installing CCTV and HD camera
around the areas that are not used to people is the edge of this business.
Likewise, pagkamalikhain (creativity) is significant in this kind of business
because the absence of creativity can lead to failure of the business. Creativity
can be associated with the use of modern technology such as CCTV and HD
camera that can be useful to every business.

F. Entrepreneurship. Sari- Sari Store and Feed Supply are the business related to
Entreprenuership in Brgy. Mal-ay. The store is located along the National
Highway of the barangay and was established on 2007. It is owned by Mrs.
Lovella Anacion Gendrano. Basically, the main purpose of the owner is to earn
money but she also wants to provide convenience for the customers by selling
almost all items and supplies. The business was chosen because it is inherited
from the parents and provides one of the necessities of people. The usual
opening of the store is 5 o’clock in the morning and closed by 9 o’clock in the
evening. Christmas day is when the store is unavailable to customer.
Furthermore, the services or products reach to adjacent barangay’s and vicinity
of Lopez, Quezon. Purchase raw materials are came from Lucena, Gumaca, and
Lopez. Debt is one of the challenges that the owner encounters. She tries to
solve the problem by choosing the barrowers which are considered good payers.
Others who do not pay will not give a chance to barrow again. The significance
of Pagkamalikhain in the business is the uniqueness of goods and services that
being offered to the customers. However, in this kind of business, there are
always debtors, and some would fail to pay their obligations. In order to solve
this, owner of the sari-sari store should be strict in terms of the costumers
borrowing in their store. There would be an agreement between the owner and
the borrower, so that, there would be no misunderstanding between the two.
