Module 1: SESSION FOUR:
complete the same tasks as written in the
LEADERSHIP AND FOLLOWERSHIP
OBJECTIVE: At the end of the session, you will be
able to experience leadership and followership
situations and analyze your own performance as
leaders and as followers.
DISCUSSIONS: Discuss situations when you had to
lead and situations when you had to follow others.
THINGS TO DO:
Activity 1: Leading and Following
a. Find yourself a partner.
b. Partners stand face to face on the floor or on
grass, if the class is held outdoors.
c. Choose a leader and a follower between the
two of you.
d. The leader ties a handkerchief around the
eyes of the follower.
e. Without oral instructions, the leader will guide
the blindfolded follower through a “walk”
around the room or around a designated
circumference if the class is held outdoors. The
walk should take from three to five minutes.
f. Reverse roles. The new leader leads the
follower through the walk for three minutes to
five minutes.
Activity 2:
a. Form small groups of equal size. Choose a
leader for your group.
b. Each group will receive one envelope,
i.e.:
1. Content: of envelope for Group A:
One pair of scissors, ruler, 4 paper clips,
two 10 cm. squares of pink paper, two 10
cm. squares of white paper
2. Content: of envelope for Group B:
One pair of scissors, glue, two blue, two
white and two yellow 8.5” x 11” sheets of
paper
3. Contents of Envelope for Group C:
Felt-Tipped marker pens, two green, two
white and two yellow 8.5” x 11” sheets of
paper
4. Content: of envelope for Group D:
One green, one blue, one pink, and one
orange 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper.
c. Each group has different resources to
work with; none of the groups have the
same type or equal amounts of resources.
However, each group must attempt to
problem sheet.
PROBLEb SHEET:
Each group is to complete the following tasks:
1. Make an 8 cm x 8 cm square of white paper
2. Make a 10 cm x 5 cm rectangle of white
paper .
3. Make a T-shape piece from two 8 cm x 12 cm
rectangles in green and white paper
4. Make a 10 cm x 10 cm flag in any 3 colors
5. Make a four-linked paper chain, each link in a
different colour.
d. The first group to complete all of the
above correctly is the winner.
e. A group may bargain with other groups
for the use of the materials required to
complete the problem. No materials may
be used outside of those contained in the
envelops.
f. Groups are permitted to buy, bargain or
negotiate for the use of other groups‘
materials and equipment.
g. The leader may lead in any way that
he/she thinks is best.
h. The first group that completes the task is
the winner.
i. When the groups have completed the
task, let each group present their outputs
and discuss how they came up with them.
j. Discuss the following a5pccts of‘ the
activity:
 What factors led to a successful output?
What factors inhibited success?
 How did having a leader affect the
performance o f ‘the groups?
 Which situation felt more comfortable to
all concerned and why?
 Was there a great difference in the results
achieved?
 Which is more satisfying: being a leader or
being a follower?
 When is it easier to be a leader; when is it
easier to be a follower? Why is this so?
Why is it situational?
 What Factors favor certain styles of
leadership?
 Which is easier, to lead or to follow? Why?
 Which situation felt most comfortable and
why? Was there a great difference in the
results achieved?
 In what situations do you prefer to be a
leader? In what situations would you prefer
to be a follower?
